About Mutual Fund Insight

Mutual Fund Insight is a monthly magazine on mutual-fund investing published by Value Research, the independent investment-research firm headquartered in Noida. Launched in October 2002, it is India's longest-running dedicated mutual-fund publication, offering in-depth information, analysis and commentary on mutual funds and personal finance to individual investors. The magazine appears in print and digital formats, with each new issue released on the twentieth of every month, and is edited by Value Research founder and chief executive Dhirendra Kumar. Built on the firm's proprietary fund data and ratings, it has become a reference point for Indian savers navigating the country's mutual-fund industry for more than two decades. Subscriptions and archives are managed through the Value Research online store.

Launch and early years

Mutual Fund Insight was launched in October 2002, a period when India's mutual-fund industry was still young and retail participation was limited. Value Research's founder, Dhirendra Kumar, has recalled preparing the first issue at a time when there were forty-one fund companies in India — many of which, including high-flying names of the era such as Zurich, Kothari-Pioneer and Alliance Capital, have since disappeared. The cover interview of the first issue featured the fund manager Bharat Shah of the ASK Group, then making his name as an investment manager. The magazine positioned itself from the start as the country's only dedicated mutual-fund publication, filling a gap between the industry's marketing material and the general financial press. Within four years it was celebrating its fourth anniversary with a special issue that stepped beyond mutual funds into broader wealth management, covering insurance, tax-saving fixed-return investments and life-stage financial planning.

Value Research, the publisher

The magazine is published by Value Research India Private Limited, the company behind the Value Research investment-research business founded by Dhirendra Kumar in 1990. Value Research began as one of India's first equity-research firms and became known as the country's most accurate source of mutual-fund data, supplying data and analysis to financial portals during the first dot-com boom. The company launched Value Research Online in 2001, which became India's most popular online source of mutual-fund data for investors. It is headquartered in its own building in Noida, with marketing and analytical presence in Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata, and remains privately held by Kumar and his family, self-funded and profitable. The firm's independence from fund manufacturers has been central to the magazine's credibility with readers.

Editorial leadership

Dhirendra Kumar, the founder and chief executive of Value Research, serves as the editor of Mutual Fund Insight. A well-known figure in Indian personal finance, Kumar writes the magazine's "First Page" column, reflecting on pressing issues facing investors and offering long-term investment advice. His editorial voice — sceptical of market hype, insistent on process and discipline, and focused on evidence-based analysis — sets the tone for the publication. The magazine is produced by Value Research's in-house team of analysts and writers, drawing on the same research infrastructure that powers the firm's fund ratings, portfolio tools and advisory services. Printing and distribution are handled by Value Research India Private Limited and Value Research Publishing Private Limited.

Content and regular features

Each issue of Mutual Fund Insight combines fund analysis with practical investor guidance. Standing features include the mutual-fund scoreboard and a compilation of SIP (systematic investment plan) returns across fund categories, allowing readers to compare performance on a consistent basis. Recent issues have carried bonus reports such as the "Big 50" — insights into fifty of the largest equity-oriented schemes — and roundups of the most rewarding SIP funds for new, seasoned and tax-saving investors. The "Ask Value Research" section answers readers' investment questions, while feature articles examine market trends, asset allocation, fund-manager interviews and regulatory developments. The emphasis throughout is on long-term, goal-based investing rather than short-term market timing.

Publication rhythm and formats

Mutual Fund Insight is a monthly subscription magazine, with the new issue released on the twentieth of every month and dispatched on the day of publication; delivery typically takes five to seven business days depending on the address. The magazine is available in both print and digital formats. Digital subscribers can read each issue through the "My Subscriptions" section of the Value Research website and its Android app, receiving an email notification with every new release, and can access issues as PDF files or through an online reading portal. Back issues are available on a payment basis. The subscription model — rather than newsstand sales — reflects the magazine's positioning as a specialist publication for committed investors.

Milestones

The magazine marked four years of publication with a special anniversary issue focused on forward-looking wealth-management themes rather than nostalgia, including a ranking of India's top fifty mutual funds based on its fund analysis. In 2024, Value Research celebrated twenty-two years of Mutual Fund Insight, with Kumar reflecting on the journey from age thirty-two to fifty-four and on how completely the industry had changed: from physical forms, cheques and statements sent by post to today's digital investing, and from forty-one fund companies to a far larger and more consolidated industry. The anniversary was presented as evidence of the magazine's staying power in a media category where most personal-finance titles have struggled to survive.

The readership

Mutual Fund Insight's readers are predominantly serious individual investors — savers managing their own portfolios, financial advisers and distributors who use the magazine's data in their practice. Value Research has published reader accounts illustrating the magazine's role: one long-time reader, a Mumbai-based engineer, described discovering the magazine in 2003 through his broker and using its fund ratings to build a disciplined, SIP-driven equity portfolio that he maintained without interruption for years. Such accounts reflect the publication's core audience: investors who value independent, research-backed guidance over tips and market noise. The magazine's subscriber base has grown alongside the Indian mutual-fund industry, whose assets and investor counts have multiplied many times over since 2002.

Position in the market

Value Research has long described Mutual Fund Insight as the only dedicated mutual-fund magazine in India, a claim that reflects the thinness of specialist competition in the category. Where general business magazines cover mutual funds as one topic among many, Mutual Fund Insight devotes every page to the subject, backed by the firm's proprietary database and star-rating system. Its independence — Value Research does not manufacture or distribute funds — distinguishes it from industry publications. The magazine's analytical framework, including its fund scoreboard and category analysis, is widely cited by advisers and financial journalists, giving the title an influence beyond its circulation.

Sister publications and the wider business

Mutual Fund Insight sits within a family of Value Research print and digital products. In 2006 the company launched Wealth Insight, a monthly magazine on equity investing published in association with ICICIDirect, which became India's largest equity-investment publication. The firm's publishing arm also produces the annual "Best Funds for Growth, Income, and Short-term Goals" companion and the investment factbook "Your Guide to the Best Investments," alongside books such as "The Way to Save & Prosper," a best-of compilation from the magazine's pages first published in 2004. These sit alongside the company's digital businesses — Value Research Online, the Stock Advisor service launched in 2017, Analytics Pro for advisers and researchers, and the Fund Advisor premium service launched in 2023 — making the magazine the print flagship of one of India's most established independent investment-research houses.
