About NDR Blue

NDR Blue

NDR Blue is the music-specialist digital radio programme of Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR), broadcasting across Hamburg, Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein, and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Launched on 2 May 2008 as "NDR Musik Plus" and renamed NDR Blue on 23 October 2012, it is a DAB+-only station (plus satellite and internet) for listeners who value music beyond the charts: authorial programmes by music journalists, repeats of selected NDR music programmes, pop, rock, and jazz presented more broadly and deeply than on the main waves. The NDR intendant is Hendrik Lünenborg (since 1 September 2025).

Overview

NDR Blue broadcasts from Hamburg via DAB+ (on the NDR's digital multiplexes), satellite (Astra), and internet stream — it has no FM frequencies. The NDR intendant is Hendrik Lünenborg.

History

NDR Blue began on 2 May 2008 as "NDR Musik Plus" — the NDR's first digital-only music channel, launched onto the broadcaster's DAB multiplexes. The initial programme consisted largely of the night programmes "Nightlounge" and "Nachtclub", with news and weather at the top of each hour: essentially, the NDR's musical night offering repackaged as a full-time digital channel.

The 23 October 2012 renaming to "NDR Blue" — after legal checks on the name's availability — marked the station's coming of age. The programme was simultaneously expanded: promotions for the musical programmes of the other NDR stations, a daily concert ("NDR Blue in Concert"), jazz programmes, and repeats from NDR 2 and N-Joy joined the schedule. "Blue" — the colour of the deep, the nocturnal, the melancholic — positioned the station as the NDR's music-connoisseur channel: for listeners who find the charts too narrow.

The DAB+ distribution was consolidated on 5 January 2012, when the NDR's digital offering was rounded out with NDR Info Spezial, NDR Blue, and the traffic channel NDR Traffic on the DAB+ standard (the old DAB distribution having ended in summer 2011). NDR Blue has been part of the NDR's digital trio of specialist channels ever since, alongside NDR Schlager and NDR Info Spezial.

Music Beyond the Charts

NDR Blue's format philosophy is a critique of format radio. The main waves — NDR 2, N-Joy, the regional programmes — play hits: the songs the audience already knows, tested by research, rotated by format clocks. NDR Blue plays the rest: the album tracks, the B-sides, the live versions, the new artists the charts have not discovered, the jazz the pop stations would never touch. Its target listener is the music enthusiast for whom the charts are too narrow — the person who reads the credits, who goes to club gigs, who remembers when radio introduced them to bands.

The station's origins in "Nightlounge" and "Nachtclub" — the NDR's musical night programmes — are telling. Night radio has always been where public broadcasters take musical risks: the daytime belongs to the format, the night to the enthusiast. NDR Blue took the night's ethos and made it a 24-hour station: the whole day programmed with the freedom the night once monopolised. The hourly news and weather preserve the public-service skeleton; everything else is musical exploration.

The Authorial Programme

The heart of NDR Blue is the authorial programme — the "Autorensendung" by music journalists. In an age of algorithmic playlists, the authorial programme is a deliberate anachronism: a knowledgeable human, with taste and opinions, playing music they love and explaining why. The NDR's music journalists — veterans of decades on the northern airwaves — bring a curatorial authority no algorithm can match: the stories behind the songs, the connections between genres, the context that turns listening into understanding.

The repeats of selected music programmes from the larger NDR stations serve a double function: they give exceptional broadcasts a second life, and they introduce NDR Blue's audience to the musical journalism of the main waves. The daily "NDR Blue in Concert" — a concert every day — makes the station a venue: the live experience, with its imperfections and electricity, as daily programming.

Blue: The Brand

The 2012 renaming from the descriptive "NDR Musik Plus" to the evocative "NDR Blue" was a branding masterstroke. "Musik Plus" described; "Blue" suggests. Blue is the colour of the deep sea and the night sky, of melancholy and coolness, of jazz clubs and denim — the chromatic shorthand for musical depth. The legal checks before the renaming (the NDR verified the name's availability) show how seriously the broadcaster took the brand: in the digital age, a station's name must work as an app icon, a stream title, a hashtag.

The renaming also marked the station's emancipation from its origins: no longer just "more music" (the "Plus"), but a distinct musical identity — the NDR's blue note in a dial of primary colours.

The Digital Specialist

NDR Blue's DAB+-only distribution places it in the distinctive economics of digital specialist radio. Without FM frequencies, the station cannot compete for mass audiences; with DAB+ and streaming, it can serve a dispersed community of enthusiasts across four states — a community too thin in any single city for an FM station, but substantial in aggregate. The satellite distribution (Astra 1M, unencrypted) extends this logic: the signal reaches wherever the dish points, far beyond the terrestrial footprint.

This is the promise of digital radio that the ARD's reformers are now questioning: specialist channels are expensive per listener, and the 2024 interstate media treaty reform has put digital-only programmes under scrutiny across the ARD. NDR Blue's future — like that of its digital siblings — depends on the broadcaster's ability to justify the enthusiast's station in an age of austerity. The argument for it is cultural: a public broadcaster that only plays hits abandons the musical margins where tomorrow's mainstream is born.

Jazz on the Dial

The jazz programming deserves special mention. Jazz — once the music of German radio's modernity, now a niche — survives on public radio almost exclusively. NDR Blue's jazz programmes continue a northern German tradition: Hamburg's NDR Bigband (the former NDR Studio Band, one of Europe's great jazz orchestras) and the Elbphilharmonie's jazz programme give the city a living jazz culture, and the radio station is its broadcast voice. For jazz listeners in the north, NDR Blue is not just a station but a lifeline — the only dial position where the music is treated as art rather than background.

Programming

NDR Blue addresses listeners who value music beyond the hit lists. The schedule features authorial programmes by music journalists — curated, knowledgeable, personal — alongside repeats of selected music programmes from the NDR's larger stations. The genres centre on pop, rock, and jazz, but the ambition is to present them more broadly and deeply than most stations attempt: album tracks, live recordings, new discoveries, and the daily "NDR Blue in Concert".

Coverage and Audience

NDR Blue is receivable terrestrially only via DAB+ across the NDR's four states (and, through transmitter spillover, in Bremen), plus unencrypted satellite (Astra 1M) and internet stream. As a digital-only specialist channel, its audience is modest compared to the FM waves — but culturally distinctive: the music enthusiasts the main waves cannot serve.

Ownership and Funding

NDR Blue is operated by Norddeutscher Rundfunk, the public-law broadcaster for Hamburg, Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein, and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and a member of the ARD, headquartered in Hamburg. Like the NDR's other programmes, it is financed through the broadcasting licence fee. The NDR intendant is Hendrik Lünenborg.

Digital Presence

NDR Blue's online presence is integrated into the NDR's digital platforms at ndr.de, with livestream and programme information; programme directories list the station under ndr.de/ndrblue. Because the official domain has not been independently load-verified, the website field of this profile is left empty pending verification.
