About NEPCON China

NEPCON China

NEPCON China is one of China's largest and longest-running trade fairs for electronics manufacturing and surface-mount technology, known as SMT. Held annually in Shanghai, the event brings together equipment makers, component suppliers, electronics manufacturing services providers, engineers and buyers from across China and overseas. Its official website is nepconchina.com, and the show is organised by Reed Exhibitions, now known as RX, together with the electronics and information industry sub-council of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, commonly referred to as CCPIT. Over four decades, NEPCON China has become a central meeting point for an industry that sits at the heart of modern manufacturing, because almost every electronic product, from telephones and computers to cars, medical devices and industrial controls, depends on printed circuit boards populated accurately and at scale.

The name NEPCON itself carries the show's origins. It stands for Network on Electronics Packaging and Production Conference, a formulation that reflects an era when electronics packaging and production were emerging as distinct professional disciplines. The NEPCON name is not unique to China. RX stages NEPCON events as a global series, with editions documented in Japan, Thailand, Vietnam and elsewhere in Asia. The China edition, however, has a particular historical weight, because its beginnings coincide with a turning point in Chinese manufacturing: the introduction of SMT automated placement production to China in the mid-1980s.

Origins in 1985 and the Arrival of SMT in China

According to the documented history of the show, NEPCON China opened in Shanghai in 1985, alongside the introduction of SMT automated placement production to China. That timing matters for understanding the event's significance. Surface-mount technology changed electronics assembly by allowing components to be placed directly onto the surface of printed circuit boards, rather than inserted through holes, enabling smaller, denser and more automated production. A trade fair devoted to that technology, arriving at the moment the technology itself arrived in the country, was positioned from the start as more than a sales exhibition. It was a place where Chinese factories, engineers and managers could see the new method of production demonstrated by the companies that supplied its machines and materials.

The anniversary framing used by the organisers underlines that link. In 2015, NEPCON China marked the 30th anniversary of the introduction of SMT to China, holding commemorative events that included a picture show illustrating 30 years of development in China's electronics manufacturing industry and in the growth of NEPCON China itself, as well as a commemorative gala for invited buyers and long-time exhibitors. Five years earlier, the show's 20th edition in 2010 had marked the 25th anniversary of SMT's entry into China. Anniversaries of a technology, celebrated by a trade fair, are unusual, and they reflect how closely the event's identity is bound up with the modernisation of Chinese electronics production.

Organisers: RX and the CCPIT Electronics Sub-Council

NEPCON China is organised by Reed Exhibitions, now operating as RX, described in trade coverage as a leading global organiser of trade fairs and events, in partnership with the CCPIT electronics and information industry sub-council. That combination of an international exhibition organiser and a Chinese industry body has been a consistent feature of the show's documented history. Reports of the 2012 and 2015 editions, for example, credit Reed Exhibitions and CCPIT jointly, and senior Reed executives such as Josephine Lee, then Senior Vice President of Reed Exhibitions Greater China, and Michiel Kruse, then Vice President of Reed Exhibitions East China, are quoted in coverage explaining the show's direction and its new segments.

The organiser's wider NEPCON footprint in China has also been documented. Trade reporting on the 2012 edition noted that, together, NEPCON China in Shanghai, NEPCON South China in Shenzhen and NEPCON West China in Chengdu covered the country's main electronics manufacturing hubs, giving the series a presence in the east, south and west of China. The Shenzhen event is now presented as NEPCON Asia, and its 2025 edition was co-hosted by RX Greater China with a centre under China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. For the Shanghai flagship, however, the core proposition has remained consistent: a single annual platform where the full SMT and electronics manufacturing supply chain can be seen in one place.

Venues in Shanghai: From Everbright to the World Expo Centre

NEPCON China has always been a Shanghai event, but its home within the city has changed as the show and the city's exhibition infrastructure have grown. The 2009 edition, held from 21 to 24 April that year, took place at the Shanghai Everbright Convention and Exhibition Center, and the 20th edition in 2010 was also staged at the Shanghai Everbright Convention and Exhibition Center. By the early 2010s, the show had outgrown that setting. Reed Exhibitions announced in December 2011 that NEPCON China 2012 would move to the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition and Convention Center, the venue built in connection with Expo 2010 Shanghai, with the first edition there running from 25 to 27 April 2012.

The move was accompanied by expansion. The 2012 edition occupied a record 34,000 square metres, and the World Expo centre has remained the show's documented home in subsequent editions, including 2015 and the editions of the 2020s. The 2025 edition, described in industry coverage as the 33rd China International Electronics Production Equipment and Microelectronics Industry Exhibition, was held at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition and Convention Center from 22 to 24 April 2025, under the theme of new business opportunities in electronic manufacturing, with a showcase reported at 45,000 square metres and more than 500 exhibitors. The continuity of venue since 2012 has given exhibitors and visitors a stable base in the Pudong Expo area while the floor area available to the show has continued to increase.

Scale and Editions: Exhibitors, Visitors and Growth

The documented figures for NEPCON China trace a show of substantial and durable scale. The 2008 event welcomed more than 16,000 visitors over four days, according to reporting ahead of the 2009 edition, with 80 percent of floor space for 2009 already booked before that edition opened. The 20th edition in 2010 gathered about 500 exhibitors, a figure that recurred in later reporting. NEPCON China 2012, in its new venue, presented more than 500 exhibitors from over 22 countries and regions, displaying more than 1,000 pieces of electronics manufacturing equipment, test and measurement products, components and other machinery, and it attracted 18,392 industry visitors, reported at the time as the highest visitor number in the show's history.

Growth continued in the middle of the decade. NEPCON China 2015, held from 21 to 23 April at the Shanghai expo centre and organised by Reed Exhibitions and CCPIT, brought together nearly 22,000 trade visitors and about 450 leading brand names from 22 countries and regions, with visitor numbers reported as 5 percent higher than in 2014. Directory listings for later editions record 500 exhibitors and 26,819 visitors in 2018, and 450 exhibitors and 27,951 visitors in 2017, indicating that the show sustained an audience in the high twenty-thousands in the years before the pandemic period. The 2023 edition, held from 19 to 21 July that year, was promoted as bringing together 600 exhibiting brands and companies and inviting 35,000 high-end electronics manufacturing buyers from sectors including medical, automotive, communications, servers and industrial control. Taken together, these figures describe a mature trade fair whose scale is measured in hundreds of exhibitors, tens of thousands of professional visitors and tens of thousands of square metres.

Exhibitors and the Technologies on Display

The exhibitor lists documented across NEPCON China's history read as a roll call of the global SMT industry. The 2010 edition included Agilent, Siemens, Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, Fuji, Yamaha and JUKI. The 2012 edition was expected to include Assembleon, Agilent, ASM with its Siplace placement systems, Sony, Hitachi, Samsung, Panasonic, Fuji, Henkel, Yamaha, Tokyo Juki and DEK, alongside first-time participants. In 2015, industry leaders named in post-show reporting included ASM, Europlacer, Fuji Machine, Mycronic, Panasonic, Samsung Techwin, Tokyo Juki, WKK and Yamaha, presenting precision technologies and electronics manufacturing solutions. Reporting on the 2024 edition named ASMPT, Fuji, Yamaha, Hanwha, Juki, Heller, Rehm, Ersa, Omron, TRI and Koh Young among the heavyweight exhibitors, and preview coverage of 2025 again named ASMPT, Yamaha and Omron.

The product range behind those names covers the whole process of electronics assembly. Documented exhibit categories include SMT and placement equipment, soldering equipment and materials, test and measurement equipment, dispensing and spraying or coating, electronics manufacturing automation, electrostatic discharge protection and cleanroom or purifying equipment, bar code equipment and materials, components, electromechanical assembly machinery and electronics manufacturing services. Later editions added emphasis on printed and flexible electronics, advanced packaging, semiconductor packaging, touch and display technology, automotive electronics and smart factory systems. That breadth is the show's defining claim: a visitor responsible for a production line can compare placement machines, solder pastes, inspection systems and automation solutions within a single visit.

Programme: Forums, Competitions and Business Matching

NEPCON China has never been only an exhibition floor. Its documented programme has long combined conferences, forums and hands-on activities intended to spread technical knowledge and create business contacts. The 2012 edition included the SMTA China East Conference, an Engineers' Salon, an SMT Home member gathering, a Printed and Flexible Electronics Industry Development Forum, an East China manual welding competition and a summit forum on China's anti-static industry. Manual soldering competitions, in which technicians demonstrate precision hand-soldering skills, became a long-running feature of the show, alongside SMT industry forums.

Seminars in 2015 covered topics as varied as the internet of vehicles, printed electronics, new materials applications, mobile telecommunications, smart factories and smart wearables. The 2024 edition was reported to include more than 20 summit forums, including SMTA East China technology and equipment seminars, a NEPCON summit on the green transformation of the electronics manufacturing industry and a forum on three-proofing technology and standards. Preview coverage of 2025 pointed to more than 20 industry sessions addressing artificial intelligence, humanoid robotics and the low-altitude economy, reflecting how electronics manufacturing now supplies sectors far beyond consumer devices. Alongside the educational programme, the organisers developed structured business matching. The TAP, or targeted attendee programme, grew sharply by 2015, with TAP visitors rising from 438 to 1,066, an increase reported at 143.4 percent, and the TAP team completing 625 business match-ups through pre-show communication. Later editions added international Country Day activities, with buyers from countries such as Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia offered dedicated matchmaking sessions, a feature also documented for the Shenzhen NEPCON Asia edition.

New Segments and Industry Shifts

The show's organisers have used new segments to signal where electronics manufacturing is heading. For 2012, four new segments were launched: an ESD and clean room segment, an electronics manufacturing automation segment, an advanced electronics packaging segment and a touch panel segment. Reed presented those additions as a direct response to prevailing trends and emerging needs, and noted that 95 percent of available booths had been sold by the time of the announcement. Green Lighting Shanghai 2012, co-organised by the China Semiconductor Lighting association body CSA and Reed Exhibitions, was co-located with NEPCON China that year, extending the show's reach into lighting and new light sources.

Subsequent editions continued that pattern of following the industry's centre of gravity. Coverage of the 2012 show described a focus on electronics manufacturing automation, ESD, new energy and new light sources as a barometer of the trade. By the 2020s, documented themes included semiconductor packaging and testing, automotive electronics, wireless communication, smart factory and automation technology and, in 2025, applications linked to artificial intelligence and robotics. The 2023 promotion specifically highlighted a strategic layout for the automotive electronics sector, with automotive manufacturing technical seminars and procurement activities intended to attract brand-name corporate buyers from the car industry. In this way the exhibition floor has mirrored China's own industrial shift, from high-volume consumer electronics assembly toward higher-value production for vehicles, industrial systems and advanced devices.

NEPCON China Within the Global NEPCON Series

NEPCON China belongs to a wider family. The NEPCON name originated as a conference and exhibition brand for electronics packaging and production, and RX stages NEPCON-branded events in several Asian markets, including Japan, Thailand and Vietnam, as documented in descriptions of the series. Within China, the brand historically covered the country's principal electronics manufacturing regions through the Shanghai flagship, the Shenzhen event in the south and an event in Chengdu in the west. The Shenzhen edition, now known as NEPCON Asia, illustrates the scale the brand can reach in the Pearl River Delta: its 2025 edition in Shenzhen was reported to have drawn 68,539 professional visitors, with hundreds of exhibitors across SMT, semiconductor packaging, automotive electronics and related fields, and to have run concurrently with several other technology exhibitions.

For Shanghai, that wider network matters because exhibitors and visitors often operate across borders. A placement-equipment maker may launch a machine in Shanghai, show it again in Shenzhen and meet Southeast Asian buyers through the series' country-focused programmes. NEPCON China's international exhibitor base, consistently reported as coming from more than 20 countries and regions, and its overseas buyer activities place the Shanghai show inside that regional circuit rather than treating it as a purely domestic event, even though serving China's own vast manufacturing base remains its primary purpose.

Significance for China's Electronics Manufacturing Industry

The significance of NEPCON China is best understood alongside the industry it serves. China became the world's largest base for electronics production during the decades in which NEPCON China grew, and SMT is the core process technology of that production. A trade fair that began in 1985, at the moment SMT automated placement entered China, and that was still drawing hundreds of exhibitors and tens of thousands of visitors forty years later, has functioned as a recurring point of contact between global technology suppliers and Chinese factories. Trade publications have repeatedly described it in those terms: Electronic Specifier called it one of China's largest and most successful SMT and electronics manufacturing events, and show reporting has described it as the leading platform for visitors to network, source suppliers, gather market information and learn about the latest technologies.

Its significance is also practical rather than ceremonial. Exhibitor testimony quoted in show coverage has described NEPCON as a guarantee of qualified visitors that could not be replaced by another show or organiser, and senior technical managers from manufacturing companies have described the knowledge gained from visiting as directly useful to their work. For suppliers, the show offers concentrated access to production decision-makers; for factories, it offers the chance to evaluate competing equipment first hand, attend technical conferences such as those run with SMTA, and meet upstream and downstream partners. As Chinese electronics manufacturing moves toward automation, advanced packaging and new application areas, the documented evolution of NEPCON China's segments and forums suggests the show intends to remain the place where that transition is displayed, debated and sold, continuing a role it has held since 1985.
