About Neue Westfälische

Neue Westfälische

The Neue Westfälische (NW) is a German regional subscription daily newspaper for East Westphalia-Lippe (Ostwestfalen-Lippe), published in Bielefeld, North Rhine-Westphalia — the city at the edge of the Teutoburg Forest, home of the Sparrenburg castle and, famously, the subject of the Bielefeld conspiracy satire. Created on 3 July 1967 through the merger of the Westfälische Zeitung with the Freie Presse, it traces its lineage to the Öffentlichen Anzeigen des Distriktes Bielefeld of 1811 and the Volkswacht tradition of 1830–1933. Appearing Monday through Saturday in Rhenish format with numerous local editions, it is the highest-circulation newspaper in the Ostwestfalen-Lippe region, with sold circulation of about 145,000 copies — ahead of its great rival, the Westfalen-Blatt, with which it now cooperates on local sports coverage. Since 2016 it has been wholly owned by the Deutsche Druck- und Verlagsgesellschaft (DDVG), the SPD's media holding company. Its website is nw.de, the paper's digital home and one of the region's most-visited news portals.

Overview

The Neue Westfälische is the newspaper of Ostwestfalen-Lippe — the eastern Westphalian region around Bielefeld, Gütersloh, Paderborn, and Detmold, one of Germany's economically strongest mid-sized regions, home to global companies like Bertelsmann, Miele, and Dr. Oetker. With a subscription share of over 90 percent, it is a classic German Abonnement-Tageszeitung: loyal, locally rooted, delivered to the door.

The NW appears with many local editions: Bad Oeynhausener Kurier, Bielefelder Tageblatt (in six individual editions), Bünder Tageblatt, Gütersloher Zeitung, Herforder Kreisanzeiger, Kreiszeitung für Höxter und Warburg, Löhner Nachrichten, Paderborner Kreiszeitung, Tageblatt für Enger und Spenge, and Zeitung für den Altkreis Lübbecke. It forms a publishing unit with the Lippische Landes-Zeitung of Detmold and the Haller Kreisblatt of Halle (Westphalia), which take their national section from Bielefeld — extending the NW's journalistic footprint across the old principality of Lippe and the Halle district.

History

A 1967 merger with deep roots

From the Öffentlichen Anzeigen des Distriktes Bielefeld, founded in 1811, the Neue Westfälische emerged on 3 July 1967 through the fusion of the Westfälische Zeitung with the Freie Presse — the latter belonging to the DDVG, the SPD's publishing house. The NW also stands in the tradition of the Volkswacht, which appeared in Bielefeld from 1830 to 1933.

The Freie Presse itself was a storied paper: founded on 3 April 1946 by Emil Groß, who received the license from the British occupation authorities, it succeeded the old Volkswacht (first published 1890) — the name "Freie Presse" was chosen to signal a new beginning, with its point of reference the traditions of the "Freie Presse" published in Amsterdam exile. The SPD veteran Carl Severing (1875–1952) initially took the editorship, formulating the paper's mission around three great goals: democracy, socialism, and peace among peoples — "it is a commandment of true democracy," he wrote, "not to regard the teachings of an individual as infallible, but to encourage everyone to think critically." In the 1950s the Freie Presse reached circulation above 90,000 — clearly more than its competitors Westfälische Zeitung and Westfalen-Blatt. It was at the Freie Presse that the later WDR journalists and directors Friedrich Nowottny and Fritz Pleitgen, as well as NDR program director Jürgen Kellermeier, trained as journalists and worked as editors in the politics/news and business departments.

SPD ownership

The DDVG took over the roughly 43 percent share of the J.D. Küster Nachfahren Verwaltungsgesellschaft on 1 January 2016 and has been the sole owner since. The paper had long had an SPD-dominated ownership structure; the 2016 move completed it. This makes the NW one of the most prominent papers in the DDVG's portfolio — the Social Democrats' media arm, which also holds the stake in Madsack — and a symbol of the party's enduring presence in German regional publishing.

Cooperation and consolidation

Since the 2010s the NW has entered cooperations with other regional publishers. In 2012 it founded a multimedia content agency with the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung; Since October 2015 the NW has received its national content from RND (Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland); and in 2019 the NW, the Lippische Landes-Zeitung, and the Mindener Tageblatt founded the Redaktionsgemeinschaft der ostwestfälisch-lippischen Verlage (RG OWL) in Bielefeld — a joint editorial team for regional and national content, pooling resources across three historic publishing houses. Since 2019 the NW has also exchanged local sports content with its biggest competitor, the Westfalen-Blatt — a remarkable cooperation between rivals.

In November 2023 managing director Klaus Schrotthofer told the editorial staff that from the second quarter of 2024, print-ready cover pages would be delivered by RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland — significantly shrinking the company's editorial team, with the Bielefeld editors retaining full influence only over two regional pages and regional sports. The announcement marked a watershed: the paper's national journalism, once produced in-house, would henceforth come from Hanover — a vivid illustration of the consolidation reshaping Germany's regional press. The paper had been printed by its own subsidiary Kuester-Pressedruck until 31 May 2021; since 1 June 2021 it has been printed in Osnabrück and Schaumburg — the closure of its own press ending a chapter of in-house production.

Content and Programming

The NW's content centers on Ostwestfalen-Lippe: Bielefeld city politics and the Rathaus, the districts of the region from the Weser to the Eggegebirge, the powerful Mittelstand economy (Bertelsmann in Gütersloh, Miele and Dr. Oetker in Bielefeld, the furniture industry of the region), Arminia Bielefeld football — the club whose fans famously "prove" Bielefeld exists — and the cultural life of the region, from the Bielefeld Kunsthalle to the Detmold open-air museum. The many local editions give each sub-region dedicated pages, while the shared national section — increasingly supplied by RND — covers German and world news. The RG OWL joint newsroom produces regional and national content for the three partner papers, a model of cooperation that would have been unthinkable in the competitive era.

Coverage and Audience

The Neue Westfälische serves Ostwestfalen-Lippe — administratively roughly the Detmold district — one of Germany's most economically dynamic regions, where global corporations sit alongside family-owned Mittelstand champions. With about 145,000 sold copies (down nearly 45 percent since 1998) and a subscription share above 90 percent, its readership is exceptionally loyal — the kind of readers who have taken the same paper for decades. It is the highest-circulation newspaper in the region, ahead of its rival Westfalen-Blatt.

Ownership

Since 1 January 2016 the Neue Westfälische has been wholly owned by the Deutsche Druck- und Verlagsgesellschaft (DDVG), the SPD's media holding company — the culmination of a decades-long Social Democratic presence in the paper's ownership, dating to the Freie Presse's founding as an SPD paper in 1946. It is published by Zeitungsverlag Neue Westfälische GmbH & Co. KG of Bielefeld. The managing director is Klaus Schrotthofer.

Digital Presence

The website nw.de carries the paper's regional journalism online, with continuously updated Ostwestfalen-Lippe news, e-paper editions, and newsletters. The site operates with digital subscriptions behind a paywall, serving one of Germany's most digitally engaged regional audiences — fitting for a region that hosts Bertelsmann and a dense IT economy, where readers expect digital sophistication. The paper is active on social media with regional content, and its digital editions reach readers across the economically powerful Ostwestfalen-Lippe region and beyond. The NW's "....weil wir hier zuhause sind" motto — "because this is our home" — captures a local rootedness that the digital edition carries to former East Westphalians everywhere.
