About Nick Jr. Deutschland
Nick Jr. Deutschland
Nick Jr. Deutschland is a German pay-television channel for preschool children, owned by Paramount and based in Berlin. Broadcasting 24 hours a day without advertising breaks, it shows series for the youngest Nickelodeon viewers. The channel launched as a standalone service on 31 March 2009, succeeding a Nick Jr. programming block that had aired on Nickelodeon Germany since its 2005 relaunch. It is the German version of the international Nick Jr. brand, one of the world's most established preschool television offerings.
Overview
Nick Jr. targets children of preschool age — roughly two to six years old — with gentle, educational animated and live-action series. The German feed broadcasts in German in SD (576i) and HD (1080i; HD since 10 December 2014), receivable via DVB-C cable, DVB-S satellite, IPTV and streaming within pay-TV packages. Like its sister channel Nicktoons, it carries no advertising interruptions, a deliberate feature of its preschool positioning.
The broadcast area covers Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Luxembourg. The channel is part of Paramount's Nickelodeon Group, alongside Nickelodeon Germany (free-to-air) and Nicktoons Deutschland (pay-TV).
History
The Nick Jr. brand in Germany began as a programming block. When Nickelodeon relaunched in Germany on 12 September 2005 under the short name Nick, a Nick Jr. morning block for preschoolers was part of the schedule from the start. (An earlier Nick Jr.-style block, presented by the Face character known in German as "Gesicht," had already aired on the original 1995–1998 Nickelodeon Germany.)
The standalone 24-hour channel launched on 31 March 2009: first in the cable network of Unitymedia, followed on 2 April 2009 by Kabel Deutschland. It was also made available through PŸUR and other cable operators. The channel received a new on-air design on 9 January 2013, together with the Nick Jr. block on free TV, and an HD simulcast launched on 10 December 2014 in Vodafone Kabel Deutschland's Vielfalt HD Extra package.
The free-TV Nick Jr. block on Nickelodeon Germany continued in parallel until 4 February 2019, when it was discontinued; since then the brand has existed in Germany exclusively as the pay-TV channel. On 1 April 2020, Nick Jr. and Nicktoons were added to Sky Deutschland, replacing Disney Junior, which closed in Germany the same day — a significant distribution gain that put the channel in Sky's kids' packages via Sky Q and Sky Ticket Entertainment (now WOW).
A new channel logo, in use since 5 February 2024, refreshed the brand's on-air identity while retaining the familiar orange splat and white-and-blue wordmark introduced in the 2010 rebrand. The channel is recorded in the KEK media database (kek-online.de), the German media authorities' register of licensed broadcasters.
Programming
The schedule is built around internationally successful preschool series from the Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. catalogue. Titles associated with the German feed have included Dora the Explorer (Dora), Go, Diego, Go!, Wonder Pets!, Paw Patrol, Blaze and the Monster Machines (Blaze und die Monster-Maschinen), Bubble Guppies, Team Umizoomi, Shimmer and Shine, Nella the Princess Knight, Rusty Rivets, Sunny Day, Butterbean's Café and Blue's Clues & You!, alongside classic Nick Jr. properties. Before the channel's launch, some of these programmes had already been shown in Germany on Super RTL and Disney Channel.
The current line-up continues to rest on long-running pillars such as PAW Patrol, Bubble Guppies and Blaze und die Monster-Maschinen, joined by newer acquisitions including Barbapapa, Baby Shark's Big Show!, Paddington's Adventures (Paddingtons Abenteuer) and Peppa Pig (Peppa Wutz). Carriage specifics vary by platform: on satellite the channel sits in Sky's Kids package, with further carriage via HD Austria; on IPTV it is available through MagentaTV and Telekom via Sky; on cable it is carried by Vodafone, NetCologne and PŸur; and on streaming through Sky Ticket and, in Austria, Sky X. The HD feed is included in Vodafone Kabel Deutschland's Vielfalt HD Extra package.
The programming philosophy follows the global Nick Jr. model: curriculum-informed, participatory shows designed to support early learning — language, numeracy, problem-solving and social skills — presented in a calm, commercial-free flow suited to very young viewers and co-viewing parents.
Brand and Educational Philosophy
Nick Jr. is one of the most researched preschool brands in children's television. Its programming follows a curriculum-based model developed with educators: shows are designed to be participatory — characters ask questions and pause for answers — and to model problem-solving, emotional literacy, early numeracy and language development. Flagship properties such as Dora the Explorer pioneered the interactive format, in which the young viewer is treated as an active participant rather than a passive spectator.
The German feed localises this philosophy through high-quality dubbing and culturally adapted presentation, while retaining the global brand's visual identity — the orange splat logo and the white-and-blue wordmark refreshed in February 2024. The absence of advertising breaks is integral to the proposition: the schedule flows without commercial interruption, a feature parents' organisations and media educators have consistently welcomed.
The channel's history in Germany mirrors the international trajectory of the Nick Jr. brand, which began as a programming block on Nickelodeon in the United States in 1988 before becoming a standalone channel. In Germany, the block-to-channel path ran from the 2005 Nick relaunch block to the 2009 channel launch, and finally to the 2019 decision to concentrate the brand entirely on the pay-TV channel — a sequence driven by the growing value of trusted preschool brands inside subscription bundles.
Coverage & Audience
Nick Jr. Deutschland is a subscription-only service available in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Luxembourg via cable, satellite (Sky), IPTV and streaming pay packages. It does not publish free-TV audience ratings. Its audience is preschool children and their parents; for platform operators, the channel's value lies in its trusted global brand, its ad-free environment and its role in family-targeted subscription bundles.
Ownership
Nick Jr. Deutschland is owned by Paramount (Paramount Networks EMEAA, part of the Nickelodeon Group). Sister channels include Nickelodeon Germany and Nicktoons Deutschland. Paramount's German television business is headquartered in Berlin.
Digital Presence
Paramount's preschool content is available on demand through Paramount+, the company's subscription streaming service, alongside the linear channel. Nick Jr. is carried by streaming aggregators and IPTV platforms within kids' packages. Programme schedules appear in platform guides and TV listings. Wikipedia lists a Nick Jr. Germany web presence redirecting to nick.de; the standalone domain could not be independently load-verified for this profile.
Beyond linear television, the Nick Jr. brand in Germany extends into licensed consumer products, live events and the broader Nickelodeon digital ecosystem, including the nick.de portal and associated apps, which offer games, clips and episodes for young viewers under parental guidance. The brand's German-language YouTube and social channels provide additional short-form content for preschool audiences. Together, the linear channel, streaming availability and digital extensions make Nick Jr. one of the most widely distributed preschool brands in the German-speaking television market.
Market Position
In the German preschool television market, Nick Jr. competes with Disney Junior, Cartoonito, the KiKA and Super RTL (Toggo) free-TV offerings, and the growing on-demand children's catalogues of the major streaming platforms. Its competitive advantages are the global strength of the Nick Jr. brand — one of the most recognised preschool brands worldwide — the ad-free linear experience, and its deep library of curriculum-based series. The channel's transition from a free-TV block to a pay-TV-only service in 2019, followed by its addition to Sky in 2020, reflects the broader economics of children's television in Germany, where premium preschool brands have increasingly migrated into subscription bundles. For parents, the channel's promise is straightforward: a safe, commercial-free, educational viewing environment backed by one of the world's most experienced children's television organisations. That promise, maintained consistently since the channel's 2009 launch, is the foundation of its continued carriage across Germany's cable, satellite, IPTV and streaming platforms, and of its status as a fixture of family subscription bundles.
