About Nickelodeon Deutschland
Nickelodeon Deutschland
Nickelodeon Deutschland is the German version of the international Nickelodeon children's brand, operated by Paramount and broadcasting from Berlin. Aimed at children between six and thirteen, it airs animated series, live-action shows, and children's films from the global Nickelodeon catalogue alongside German productions. Notably, it is the only Nickelodeon version in the world broadcast free-to-air. Its German history spans two eras: an original run from 1995 to 1998 and a relaunch in 2005 that continues today.
Overview
Nickelodeon Deutschland is Paramount's free-to-air children's channel for the German-speaking market. Its schedule is built around the Nickelodeon brand's global franchises — animated series, live-action comedies, and adventure shows — dubbed into German, supplemented by local German productions and programming blocks. The channel broadcasts free-to-air via satellite, cable, and terrestrial television, and it is financed by advertising under Germany's youth media protection regulations.
The channel's free-to-air status is exceptional: everywhere else in the world, Nickelodeon is a pay-television brand, but in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and neighbouring countries it is available unscrambled via satellite, giving it a reach no other Nickelodeon channel enjoys. Its target audience is children aged six to thirteen, with programming dayparted across the day and a secondary English audio track — added in 2023 — serving bilingual young viewers.
Nickelodeon Deutschland operates alongside Paramount's other German children's channels — the pay-TV outlets Nicktoons and Nick Jr. — and shares its channel space at night with the Comedy Central +1 timeshift.
History
Nickelodeon Deutschland first launched on 5 July 1995, headquartered in Düsseldorf, as part of the brand's European expansion. The original channel struggled: it broadcast limited hours at first and never found a sustainable audience, losing money continuously until it was closed on 31 May 1998. For seven years, German children had no domestic Nickelodeon channel.
The brand returned on 12 September 2005 under the shortened name Nick, this time headquartered in Berlin and replacing the music channel MTV2 Pop. The relaunch succeeded where the original had failed: the channel found its audience among German school-age children, and on 31 March 2010 it readopted the full Nickelodeon name on air and online, alongside the new international logo and graphics package.
The channel's broadcast hours expanded over the 2010s through a series of timeshare arrangements. From 15 December 2008, Comedy Central had shared the evening slot (8:15 p.m. to 5:45 a.m.); on 1 October 2014, Nickelodeon became a 24-hour channel in its own right, with Comedy Central moving to VIVA and Nickelodeon launching its own late-night block, Nicknight. The name was shortened to Nick again on 28 June 2017, then restored to Nickelodeon on 1 August 2023 as part of the brand's international rebrand — which also brought the English secondary audio track.
In April 2024, RTL Group agreed with Paramount Global to acquire Nickelodeon Germany and rebrand it as Toggo, but Germany's Federal Cartel Office blocked the deal that September, and the channel remains Paramount-operated. High-definition broadcasting began on 1 June 2011.
Programming and Content
Animated series are the core of Nickelodeon Deutschland's schedule. The channel broadcasts the global Nickelodeon animation franchises — long-running hits that have defined children's television for decades — dubbed into German, alongside newer animated series from the brand's studios. These series, with their distinctive Nickelodeon humour and visual style, give the channel its most recognisable identity.
Live-action programming includes Nickelodeon's signature children's sitcoms and adventure series: comedies about school, family, and friendship, mystery and action series for older children, and talent and game formats. The channel's live-action stars — from its sitcom casts to its award-show hosts — are among the most recognised young performers in German children's media.
German productions supplement the international catalogue: locally produced magazine shows, German presenters, and domestic series give the channel a German voice alongside its American imports. Children's films — animated features and family movies — fill weekend and holiday slots, while special programming blocks mark events such as the Kids' Choice Awards.
The channel's programming is carefully dayparted: preschool-friendly content in the mornings, school-age series through the afternoon, and family co-viewing in the early evening, before the nighttime hours carry the Comedy Central +1 timeshift for adult viewers.
Coverage and Audience
Nickelodeon Deutschland broadcasts free-to-air via satellite — unscrambled on Astra — as well as on cable, IPTV, and digital terrestrial platforms, reaching Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, and South Tyrol. Its programmes stream through Paramount's digital platforms. Its official website is nick.de.
The channel's audience is children aged six to thirteen, competing directly with KiKA, the public children's channel, and Super RTL's Toggo block for young viewers. Its free-to-air satellite footprint gives it exceptional reach: households without cable or pay television can receive it with a simple satellite dish, a distribution advantage no other Nickelodeon channel in the world enjoys. Detailed ratings are published by the industry's measurement bodies.
Nickelodeon Deutschland's cultural role includes its annual Kids' Choice Awards — the German edition of the brand's global awards — and its function as the German window onto the worldwide Nickelodeon universe of characters and stars.
Ownership
Nickelodeon Deutschland is owned by Paramount — currently Paramount Skydance Corporation — and operated within Paramount Networks EMEAA. Its parent within the group is the Nickelodeon Group, and its sister channels in Germany include Nicktoons, Nick Jr., Comedy Central Deutschland, and MTV Germany.
As a commercial broadcaster, Nickelodeon Deutschland is licensed by the German state media authorities and operates within Germany's dual broadcasting system, with its children's programming subject to the country's youth media protection regulations. Advertising on the channel follows the strict rules governing marketing to children.
Within Paramount's European portfolio, the German Nickelodeon is distinguished by its free-to-air status and its large German-speaking footprint, making it one of the brand's most widely distributed European operations.
The Free-to-Air Exception
Nickelodeon Deutschland's free-to-air status makes it unique in the global Nickelodeon family — and it shapes everything about the channel. In every other market, Nickelodeon is a pay-television brand, available only to subscribing households. In Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, it is unscrambled on satellite, receivable with a simple dish. That distribution gives it a reach its pay-TV siblings cannot match: it competes directly with KiKA, the licence-fee-funded public children's channel, and with Super RTL's Toggo block for the same young viewers, on equal free-to-air terms.
The free-to-air model also shapes the channel's commercial logic. Advertising-funded and widely distributed, Nickelodeon Deutschland must win its audience every day against free competitors — there is no subscription bundle guaranteeing carriage. Its response has been the strength of the global brand: franchises children know from cinemas, merchandising, and playgrounds, dubbed into German and scheduled for the German school day.
The annual Kids' Choice Awards — the German edition of the brand's global awards, with its signature slime — are the channel's flagship event, generating the kind of participatory excitement that sustains children's brands: voting, campaigning, and playground debate. In a market where children's attention is fiercely contested, the free-to-air signal remains Nickelodeon Deutschland's most distinctive asset.
Digital Presence
Nickelodeon Deutschland's digital presence is centred on nick.de, its official website, with programmes streaming through Paramount's digital platforms. The channel maintains active social media channels aimed at children and parents, distributing clips, games, and highlights on the major platforms within the regulatory framework for children's content.
The brand's digital extensions — games, apps, and on-demand video — are among the most developed in German children's media, reflecting Nickelodeon's global expertise in engaging young audiences across platforms. The Kids' Choice Awards generate substantial online engagement, with voting conducted digitally.
For German-speaking families abroad, the channel's free-to-air satellite signal and its online services keep its programming accessible wherever a dish or an internet connection reaches, subject to rights restrictions. The English secondary audio track, added in 2023, serves bilingual children and reflects the international media habits of the channel's young audience.
