About NITV

NITV

NITV (National Indigenous Television) is Australia's dedicated Indigenous television channel, operated by the Special Broadcasting Service as a free-to-air multichannel. Broadcasting nationally, NITV is made by, for and about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples — carrying Indigenous news, current affairs, documentary, drama, children's programming and sport, and giving First Nations Australians a national television voice. It was relaunched as an SBS-operated free-to-air channel on 12 December 2012, replacing SBS4. (Wikipedia lists the channel's official site as sbs.com.au; as an SBS service its web presence sits within the broadcaster's site.)

Overview

NITV occupies a unique position in Australian media: the only national television channel dedicated to Indigenous Australians — and one of the few Indigenous-controlled national broadcasters anywhere in the world. Its programming spans news and current affairs (including the flagship NITV News), documentaries, drama, children's programs, live sport and cultural programming — all centred on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stories, perspectives and talent. The channel's remit is both cultural and journalistic: to reflect Indigenous Australia to itself and to the nation, and to hold a mirror to the issues — from Closing the Gap to cultural heritage to the Voice — that define the Indigenous experience. In a media landscape where Indigenous Australians have historically been underrepresented and misrepresented, NITV's existence is itself a statement: a national platform where First Nations people control the narrative.

The channel's news service, NITV News, provides national Indigenous news coverage — the nightly bulletin that puts Indigenous stories first, rather than last; while programs like The Point, Living Black and Karla Grant Presents offer current-affairs analysis and interviews with the depth that only Indigenous-led journalism brings. NITV also broadcasts live sport with Indigenous significance — including the Koori Knockout rugby league tournament — and children's programming that reflects Indigenous culture.

History

NITV's origins lie in the community-television era: it began as a subscription and community channel serving Indigenous audiences, with limited reach — available only to those with pay television or in specific communities. The idea of a national Indigenous free-to-air channel had been advocated for years by Indigenous media organisations, who argued that First Nations Australians deserved the same national platform as other communities. In the 2012 federal budget, the government allocated $158 million to SBS — including $15 million a year to establish a new free-to-air channel devoted to Indigenous Australians, replacing the existing NITV service. Ninety per cent of NITV's staff transferred to the new channel, preserving its Indigenous workforce and editorial culture.

On 12 December 2012, NITV was relaunched as an SBS-operated free-to-air channel, replacing SBS4 on the SBS multiplex. The relaunch gave Indigenous television national free-to-air reach for the first time — a transformative moment for Indigenous media, bringing First Nations stories to every Australian household, from remote communities to capital cities. Since the relaunch, NITV has grown its news and current-affairs output, expanded its drama and documentary slate, and become a central platform for Indigenous voices in national debates — including the 2023 Voice to Parliament referendum, where NITV's coverage provided the most sustained Indigenous-led journalism of the campaign.

Programming and Content

NITV's schedule spans news, current affairs, documentary, drama, children's and sport. NITV News provides national Indigenous news — the country's only national television news service dedicated to Indigenous stories; The Point offers current-affairs discussion with Indigenous hosts and guests; Living Black, hosted by Karla Grant, is the channel's long-running interview and documentary program — one of Australian television's most enduring Indigenous current-affairs brands. The channel commissions and screens Indigenous drama and documentary, children's programming reflecting Indigenous culture — giving Indigenous children the representation on screen that previous generations never had — and live sport, including the Koori Knockout, the annual Indigenous rugby league tournament that is one of the great community sporting events in the country.

The channel's programming is distinguished by its perspective: Indigenous stories told by Indigenous people — a corrective to the historical pattern of Indigenous Australians being spoken about, rather than speaking. Its coverage of the Voice to Parliament referendum, of Closing the Gap, of cultural heritage and of community stories has made it an essential source for understanding Indigenous Australia — journalism that the mainstream media, for all its resources, has never consistently provided. The channel's drama and documentary commissions have brought Indigenous stories to national audiences — stories of history, of family, of Country, of resistance and survival — told with the authority that comes from Indigenous authorship.

Coverage and Audience

NITV broadcasts nationally on the SBS digital terrestrial multiplex, available in every state and territory, and on the VAST satellite service — reaching remote Indigenous communities as well as metropolitan audiences. The satellite reach matters: for remote communities, NITV is often the most culturally relevant television available — programming in language, stories from Country, news that speaks to community concerns. It is streamed live and on demand through SBS On Demand. Its audience is Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians — for whom it is a cultural home, a news source and a mirror — and non-Indigenous Australians seeking Indigenous perspectives: the educators, the policymakers, the curious, and the growing audience that wants to understand the country's First Nations on their own terms.

Ownership

NITV is operated by the Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) as a dedicated Indigenous channel, with its own editorial identity and Indigenous leadership — the 2012 relaunch preserved the channel's Indigenous workforce, with 90% of staff transferring, ensuring the channel remained Indigenous-led under the SBS umbrella. It is headquartered within SBS's operations, with news and production centred in Sydney. Like all SBS television services, it carries limited advertising under SBS's hybrid public-commercial funding model, with dedicated government funding supporting its Indigenous remit — the $15 million a year allocated in the 2012 budget that made the free-to-air channel possible.

Digital Presence

NITV's programming is streamed live and on demand through SBS On Demand (sbs.com.au), where Indigenous content is curated into dedicated collections — the channel's schedule extended into a permanent digital library of First Nations storytelling. NITV News and the channel's journalism are distributed through SBS's news platforms and social channels, reaching audiences beyond the broadcast signal. For Indigenous Australians, NITV is the national television voice: made by, for and about First Nations peoples — and for all Australians, it is the window into the country's oldest continuing culture. A decade after its free-to-air relaunch, NITV remains what it was created to be: the channel where Indigenous Australia speaks for itself. From its community-television origins to its 2012 national relaunch, NITV's journey is the story of Indigenous media claiming its place on the national dial — and keeping it. For the SBS multiplex, NITV is the channel with the clearest public-service justification: a national platform for the country's First Nations, free to every household — the multicultural broadcaster's charter made concrete. In the decade since the relaunch, no other Australian television service has done more to put Indigenous voices on the national dial. That is NITV's achievement — and its continuing responsibility. The channel's next chapter will be written in its schedules: the drama, the documentary, the news that keeps Indigenous Australia speaking to itself — and to the nation. From 2012 to today, NITV has been the proof that a national Indigenous channel was not just possible, but necessary. A national platform, an Indigenous workforce, a First Nations editorial voice — NITV remains Australian television's most distinctive public-service achievement.
