About Numurkah Leader

Numurkah Leader

Overview

The Numurkah Leader is a weekly newspaper serving Numurkah and its district in the Goulburn Valley of northern Victoria. First published in 1895 — the date its masthead proudly carries as "established 1895" — it is one of the long-lived independent country newspapers of the Murray-Goulburn region, produced from its office at 88 Melville Street, Numurkah. The Leader is a paid weekly, published on Wednesdays; its cover price was $1.30 in January 2021. It remains in current publication: in July 2025 Moira Shire Council placed a full-page community update in the Numurkah Leader, later that year the farming newspaper Stock & Land reported a court-ordered class action notice published in "the local 'Numurkah Leader'", and the title appears in the Australian Press Council's September 2026 list of constituent publications, with the paper's masthead recording that it is bound by the Press Council's Standards of Practice. For well over a century the Leader was edited by members of one family, the Morrises; in January 2021, in what the paper itself called "a new era", it was sold outside the family for the first time in 112 years, and its new owner-editor, Dominique Cosgriff, has published it since. The newspaper's website is numurkahleader.net.au.

History

The Numurkah Leader was first published in 1895, a beginning preserved both in its masthead and in the National Library of Australia's Trove catalogue, which holds the paper's early run as "Numurkah Leader (Vic.: 1895–1948)". By the early twentieth century the paper had come into the hands of the Morris family, whose editorship — by the paper's own account, given when the connection finally ended — ran for 112 years. The family's most celebrated figure was Lorna Morris. When her husband died unexpectedly in 1967, she took over as the paper's owner and editor, going on to raise five children while running the Leader, as her profile on the Victorian Honour Roll of Women records. She was the first woman ever to attend a Country Press conference, was named The Bulletin's Business Woman of the Year in 1979, received the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2008, and was inducted into the Victorian Honour Roll of Women in 2019. Her daughter Bev — Beverley Hutchins — succeeded her in the editor's chair, and the paper's April 2018 masthead names Hutchins as editor, working with graphic artist James Sutton, journalist Dominique Cosgriff, sales representative Heather Kelly, administrator Melinda Scott and sports contributors Joe Nihill and Angela Black. The Morris era ended with the edition of Wednesday 20 January 2021, which announced that the Leader had been sold: Hutchins, keen to retire, had sold outside the family, and Cosgriff — who had worked at the paper for almost three years — became its owner and editor, the first person from outside the Morris family to edit the paper in 112 years.

Programming and Content

The Leader's content is the record of a Goulburn Valley farming town and its shire: Moira Shire Council business, courts and community notices, schools, churches, sporting clubs, agricultural news and the births, deaths and milestones of the district. Its role as the town's paper of record is visible in the uses others make of it. In 2023 the report of the Moira Commission of Inquiry — the state-appointed inquiry into Moira Shire Council — included a section examining the council's withdrawal of its advertising from the Numurkah Leader, a measure of how central the paper's advertising and notices pages are to local civic communication. The council itself returned to those pages: a full-page Moira Shire community update was published in the Numurkah Leader of Wednesday 16 July 2025. Legal and public notices continue to flow through the paper as well; in 2025 Stock & Land reported GrainCorp's confirmation that a notice to potential class action participants had been published that week in the Numurkah Leader, the kind of statutory placement that country weeklies have carried for generations. The paper's masthead formalises the arrangement: it prints its office address at 88 Melville Street, its Australia Post publication number VA 1548, and its commitment to the Australian Press Council's Standards of Practice, and the Press Council's September 2026 constituent list continues to name the Numurkah Leader among its publications.

Audience and Reach

The Numurkah Leader's audience is the population of Numurkah and the surrounding Moira Shire farming district — an irrigation and agricultural community in the Goulburn Valley whose orchards, dairy farms and cropping country sustain the town the paper serves. The Leader is the district's own newspaper: it is sold as a paid weekly, and its pages carry the council notices, court-ordered legal notices and community announcements that make it a working instrument of local life as well as a news source. No circulation or readership figure for the paper is published in the governing records sighted for this profile, and none is asserted here; the paper's reach is evidenced instead by the documented reliance placed on it — by Moira Shire Council for its full-page community update in July 2025, by litigants and their lawyers for statutory notices reported in 2025, and by the 2023 commission of inquiry that treated the council's advertising relationship with the Leader as a matter of public record. Its inclusion in the Australian Press Council's September 2026 list of constituent publications confirms the paper's continuing place in the district's media landscape under its post-2021 ownership.

Digital Presence

The Numurkah Leader publishes online at numurkahleader.net.au, the paper's own domain. The website presents the current edition of the paper to readers alongside its contact and publication details, and the paper's presence in the digital record of its district is longstanding: its editions and mastheads — including the April 2018 masthead and the full January 2021 edition announcing the change of ownership — are preserved in digital form, and the paper's own announcements, from the 2021 "new era" statement onward, have been made through its pages and site. Third-party records corroborate a continuously publishing operation rather than a dormant one: council documents reproduce pages placed in the Leader in July 2025, Stock & Land's 2025 reporting treats the paper as the local outlet in which a class action notice was published that week, and the Press Council's September 2026 constituent list carries the title. The paper is an independent operation and should not be confused with the McPherson Media titles of the wider Goulburn Valley: McPherson Newspapers Pty Ltd's entry in the ACMA Register of Eligible News Businesses lists eleven mastheads — including the Shepparton News, Cobram Courier and Yarrawonga Chronicle — and the Numurkah Leader is not among them.

Ownership and Organisation

The Numurkah Leader is an independently owned country newspaper. For 112 years, by the paper's own account, its editorship was held by the Morris family: Lorna Morris became owner and editor in 1967 after her husband's death and built a nationally recognised career at the paper, and her daughter Beverley Hutchins later edited it. In January 2021 Hutchins sold the paper outside the family, and Dominique Cosgriff — a journalist who had worked at the Leader for almost three years — became owner and editor, as the edition of Wednesday 20 January 2021 announced. The paper is produced from its office at 88 Melville Street, Numurkah, and its masthead statements record its Australia Post publication number and its adherence to the Australian Press Council's Standards of Practice. It is not part of the McPherson Media group that publishes many of the Goulburn Valley's other newspapers: the register entry for McPherson Newspapers Pty Ltd in the ACMA's Register of Eligible News Businesses, dated 15 November 2024, lists that company's eleven mastheads and does not include the Numurkah Leader, consistent with the Leader's documented history as a family-owned and now independently owned title.
