About Oakville News
Oakville News
Overview
Oakville News is an online-only local news website serving Oakville, Ontario, a lakeside town of 213,759 residents (2021 census) in Halton Region, between Toronto and Hamilton. Published at oakvillenews.org, it provides daily coverage of Oakville town council and Halton regional government, development, police and courts, schools, health care, business, arts and community events, alongside obituaries, an events calendar and community announcements. Oakville News began as an independent digital startup founded by journalist Nolan Machan and was acquired by Village Media, the Sault Ste. Marie-based local news network, in February 2024; it was relaunched on the company's platform the following month. The site is free to read and funded by advertising and sponsorships, and it operates as Oakville's dedicated digital newsroom alongside Metroland's InsideHalton.com service.
History
Oakville News was created by Nolan Machan, who served as its president and founder, with a mission Village Media later described as providing the town with independent journalism that would strengthen the community, celebrate residents' achievements and hold local government to account. The young site found its audience during the COVID-19 pandemic, when Machan ran daily Oakville-focused pandemic updates tracking case numbers, restrictions and vaccine rollout for a town hungry for neighbourhood-level information. In a 2021 account for the Ryerson Review of Journalism (now the Review of Journalism), Machan said the pandemic coverage — together with a more mobile-friendly redesign — had lifted the site's readership from an average of 60,000 to 100,000 page views a month to 400,000 monthly page views or more by February 2021, figures he provided himself and that were not independently audited.
The wider Oakville news landscape shifted under the site in September 2023, when Metroland Media ended the print edition of the Oakville Beaver — the town's community newspaper since 1862 — in its bankruptcy-protection restructuring, leaving the Beaver's journalism online at InsideHalton.com. Five months later, on 1 February 2024, Village Media announced it had acquired Oakville News, making it the company's twenty-second Ontario community site; the site was officially relaunched under Village ownership on 21 March 2024 with expanded news coverage promised. The Beaver itself returned to print as a free monthly newspaper in 2026 under a Torstar–Metroland relaunch announced that March, but Oakville News has remained digital-only, publishing daily at oakvillenews.org.
Content and Coverage
Oakville News covers the municipal file end to end: Oakville town council and Halton regional council, where decisions on growth, transit and policing for one of the Greater Toronto Area's fastest-growing communities are made; development and housing, from the Midtown Oakville growth centre around the GO station to Glen Abbey and the new communities north of Dundas Street; and the Halton Regional Police Service, courts and fire services. Education coverage spans the Halton District and Halton Catholic school boards and Sheridan College, whose Trafalgar Road campus makes Oakville a college town, while health reporting follows Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital and Halton Healthcare. The site also covers the town's considerable cultural life — the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts, galleries and festivals — and neighbourhoods from Bronte Village and Kerr Village to Glen Abbey, River Oaks and Clearview.
Under Village Media the newsroom has been staffed with dedicated Oakville reporters; the company's October 2024 bulletin welcomed reporters Ramona Leitao and Lukas Bernasiewicz to the Oakville News team. The site's daily newsletter blends its own local headlines with the network's Village Life lifestyle stories, the Village Report stream of provincial, national and world news drawn from across the company and The Canadian Press, local flyers and an events calendar — an April 2024 edition, for example, mixed Oakville stories on public art and a new pizza-and-wings shop with a "Good morning, Oakville!" greeting and listings for library programs and pottery classes around town. Obituaries, reader polls, contests and community announcements round out the service.
Audience and Reach
Oakville News addresses the largest single-town audience of any Village Media acquisition: Oakville's population passed 213,000 in the 2021 census and the town sits within a Halton Region of more than 600,000 people, many of them commuters with a strong appetite for municipal and schools news. Village Media does not publish audited audience figures for individual outlets, so no verified readership total exists for Oakville News under its current ownership. The only site-specific numbers on record are founder Nolan Machan's own, given to the Review of Journalism in 2021: growth from 60,000–100,000 page views a month before the pandemic to 400,000 or more a month in February 2021. Those figures describe the independent site at its pandemic peak, not its current traffic. At network level, Village Media said in a 2026 industry profile that its publications reach more than five million monthly readers and distribute more than 450,000 daily newsletters; those are company-wide totals, presented by the company itself, and not an Oakville figure.
Digital Presence
Oakville News publishes only online, at oakvillenews.org, and since its March 2024 relaunch it has run on Village Media's proprietary Villager platform, developed in Sault Ste. Marie and also licensed to publishers elsewhere in Canada and abroad. Stories are posted throughout the day and distributed through a free daily email newsletter, social media accounts and Spaces, the community social platform Village Media launched in late 2024. The site carries the network's standard community toolkit — obituaries, an events calendar, business directory listings, contests and reader surveys — and Oakville News has been used as a research subject in its own right: a local news survey circulated to Oakville residents asked how they follow town, Halton, national and international news and how often they read oakvillenews.org alongside the Beaver and InsideHalton.com. Village Media's September 2026 bulletin listed Oakville News among the sponsors of community initiatives that month, including Community Development Halton, Motionball and the Optimist Club of Oakville — a current sign of an active local sales and community operation nearly three years after the acquisition.
Ownership and Organisation
Oakville News is owned by Village Media Inc., which acquired the independent site from its founder, Nolan Machan, in a deal announced on 1 February 2024; the company said it was providing the site with the support and resources to ensure its long-term sustainability, and it staffed the newsroom with dedicated reporters after the takeover. Village Media is a privately held company headquartered at 298 Queen Street East, Sault Ste. Marie. It descends from SooToday, founded in 2000 by broadcaster Dick Peplow as a local shopping directory that grew into a news site; IT consultant Jeff Elgie, an early minority investor, became chief executive after Peplow's death in 2007, took majority control in 2012 and built Village Media around the proposition that reporting should stay local while technology, advertising operations and product development are centralized. The Elgie family remains majority owner, with a small minority interest held by Glacier Media, according to the Harvard Future of Media Project's Canadian Media Ownership Index. The network now counts more than 30 owned publications, including The Trillium, its Queen's Park politics outlet; in July 2026 Village Media announced a partnership with the Knight Foundation to launch 15 local newsrooms in the United States.
