Oryx FM

Oryx FM is Qatar's French-language radio station, broadcasting from Doha on 94.0 FM.

About Oryx FM

Oryx FM is a French-language radio station broadcasting from Doha, Qatar, on 94.0 FM. Launched circa 2010 by the Qatar Media Corporation in partnership with Radio France Internationale (RFI), it was the first 100% French-language broadcaster in the Gulf — a station for the francophone community of Qatar, broadcasting 24 hours a day. Its motto is "La Radio des Francophones du Qatar" — the radio of Qatar's francophones.

History

French has been on Qatari radio since 1985, when Qatar Radio introduced a three-hour daily French programme. But Oryx FM was something new: a full-time, round-the-clock French station. Launched around 2010 through a cooperation agreement between the Qatar Media Corporation and Radio France Internationale, it replaced the limited French programme with a complete French-language service — news, music, talk and culture, all in French, all day.

The timing reflected the growth of Qatar's francophone community — estimated at around 100,000 people, including French expatriates in energy, construction, aviation, education and diplomacy, alongside Lebanese, North African and West African francophones, and Qatari professionals educated in French. For this community, Oryx FM was the first station that spoke their language full-time.

Ownership and Institutional Role

Oryx FM is operated by the Qatar Media Corporation, the state broadcasting organisation, with journalistic resources, formats and training support from Radio France Internationale. The RFI partnership gives the station access to one of the world's great French-language news operations, while QMC provides the local studios, frequencies and institutional backing.

The station is the French arm of QMC's multilingual strategy — alongside the Arabic flagship Qatar Radio, the English QBS Radio, the Urdu service, the Holy Quran service and others. There were plans at launch for Gulf-wide expansion of the French service.

Programming

Oryx FM's schedule combines French pop and hits, news bulletins, talk shows and cultural programming. The news operation draws on RFI's global newsgathering alongside local Qatari coverage. The station broadcasts 24/7 on 94.0 FM in Doha, and is carried on satellite via Badr at 26° East, with online streaming extending its reach to francophones beyond Qatar.

The RFI Partnership

Radio France Internationale is France's international public radio broadcaster, with a global audience in the tens of millions. The cooperation agreement with QMC brought RFI's journalistic standards, programme formats and training expertise to Doha — a partnership that gave Oryx FM instant credibility and a cultural prestige that a purely local French station could not have achieved alone.

The QMC Radio Family

Oryx FM sits within the Qatar Broadcasting Service family: Qatar Radio (Arabic, 1968), QBS Radio (English, 97.5 FM), Urdu Radio (FM 107), the Holy Quran service (1992), Sawt Al Khaleej (88.0 FM), Sawt Al Rayyan, Katara Radio and Hola Qatar (Spanish, 92.0 FM). Together they make QBS one of the most multilingual public radio operations in the region.

The Francophone Community

Qatar's francophone community spans the energy sector — where French companies are major players — construction, aviation, education and diplomacy. Lebanese, North African and West African francophones form a significant part of the audience, alongside French nationals and Qatari French-educated professionals. For this diverse community, Oryx FM is a cultural home: the station that speaks their language and reflects their world.

Position in Qatar's Media Landscape

Within Qatar, Oryx FM occupies a unique position: the only full-time French broadcaster in the Gulf, and the French voice of the national broadcaster. In a media market dominated by Arabic and English, it serves a community that might otherwise be invisible — proof of Qatar's ambition to be a genuinely multilingual media hub.
