About Oxygen

Oxygen is an American cable and digital multicast television network known for true crime programming, currently branded on air as Oxygen True Crime. Launched on February 1, 2000, by Oxygen Media, the channel was founded by former Nickelodeon executive Geraldine Laybourne along with Oprah Winfrey and television producers Marcy Carsey, Tom Werner, and Caryn Mandabach, with early investment from Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. Conceived as a network for younger women at a time when Lifetime dominated the women's cable category, Oxygen was acquired by NBCUniversal in 2007 for $925 million and, after a decade focused on young adult women, was relaunched in mid-2017 around true crime series and police procedural dramas. Headquartered in New York City, the network expanded onto over-the-air digital subchannels in 2022, and in 2025 it was among the NBCUniversal cable channels transferred into Versant, the company's cable network spin-off.

Founding and launch

Oxygen launched on February 1, 2000, under the ownership of Oxygen Media, a consortium assembled by founder, chairman, and chief executive officer Geraldine Laybourne. Laybourne, the former Nickelodeon executive credited with building that network's children's programming empire, founded Oxygen to fill a void in the television landscape by creating a network targeted at younger women. Its founding investors included Oprah Winfrey, the production company Carsey, Werner and Mandabach, and Paul Allen, whose Vulcan investment firm put $100 million into the startup.

The channel debuted with a splashy launch as a multimedia venture intended to bridge television and the internet, with a pricey website featuring early versions of what would later be called blogs alongside original television programming. Signature early programs included Who Cares About Girls, Mo'Nique's Fat Chance, and Campus Ladies, shows designed to debunk myths about women and television and to demonstrate that women would watch advocacy programming and deeply funny comedy. The network also created Mentors Walk, a signature advocacy event in which accomplished women mentored up-and-coming women, an initiative later adopted by women in 10 countries.

The NBCUniversal acquisition

In October 2007, NBCUniversal announced that it would acquire Oxygen Media for $925 million, or approximately $875 million net of financial assets. At the time, the seven-year-old network was available in more than 74 million homes, and NBCUniversal described it as the only fully distributed entertainment cable channel launched in the previous decade. The deal was expected to close in November 2007, and NBCUniversal said the purchase would be substantially self-funded through the sale of non-core assets, including two independent Telemundo television stations, KWHY in Los Angeles and WKAQ in Puerto Rico.

NBCUniversal president and chief executive Jeff Zucker said the acquisition increased the company's foothold in the advertiser-coveted young, upscale, female demographic and complemented its roster of cable channels, which included USA Network, Bravo, and the Sci Fi Channel. Media analysts praised the price; one SNL Kagan analyst estimated the channel's value at about $1.1 billion and told The New York Times that NBC had made a great deal. After the acquisition, the channel began to place a stronger emphasis on targeting young adult women, and the seven-year-old network was placed under the leadership of Jeff Gaspin, president and chief operating officer of the Universal Television Group.

The women's entertainment era

Under NBCUniversal ownership, Oxygen spent a decade as a women's entertainment network aimed at young adult viewers. The channel programmed reality series, competition shows, and lifestyle programming designed to appeal to its target demographic, integrating with NBCUniversal's broader women's media assets including the iVillage web destination. Zucker said at the time of the acquisition that Oxygen would benefit from promotional exposure on the Today show and across the iVillage network, creating what he called a virtual women's network that advertisers would pay a premium to reach.

Despite the investment, the channel struggled to connect with viewers in the crowded women's entertainment category. Trade press coverage noted that Oxygen had difficulty establishing a distinctive identity, competing against Lifetime, Bravo, and other networks targeting similar audiences. The network's ratings performance was uneven, and by the mid-2010s NBCUniversal was searching for a new direction for the channel.

The true crime relaunch

In March 2017, Oxygen announced that it would rebrand as a true crime network for women, and the relaunch took effect in mid-2017. The decision followed ratings success with a programming block dedicated to crime programming, which demonstrated strong audience appetite for the genre. The rebrand positioned Oxygen, now billed as Oxygen True Crime, as direct competition for Investigation Discovery, which had owned the true crime cable category since its own 2008 launch.

The move came as true crime was experiencing a cultural boom, driven by breakout hits such as Netflix's Making a Murderer and HBO's The Jinx. Oxygen's sizzle reel at NBCUniversal's May upfront presentation signaled its intent to compete head-to-head with ID for crime-loving viewers. The network's schedule shifted to true crime series and police procedural dramas, and the rebrand gave the channel the clear identity it had long lacked.

Digital multicast expansion

In 2022, Oxygen expanded beyond cable by launching as a digital multicast television network on over-the-air subchannels. The move made the network's true crime programming available to antenna viewers in markets across the country, broadening its distribution at a time when cable subscriptions were declining industry-wide. The multicast feed complemented the flagship cable network, which continued to air its true crime lineup.

The expansion reflected a broader industry trend of cable networks seeking over-the-air distribution to offset cord-cutting losses. For Oxygen, the multicast launch provided a new platform for its true crime brand and additional advertising inventory built around its crime programming.

Distribution and carriage

Oxygen is distributed nationally through cable, satellite, and streaming television providers, and since 2022 through digital multicast subchannels. As of November 2023, the network was available to approximately 59 million pay television households in the United States, down from its 2012 peak of about 80 million households, reflecting the broader decline in traditional pay television subscriptions.

The channel's true crime programming is also available through NBCUniversal's digital platforms and on-demand services, giving viewers multiple ways to watch its series beyond the linear schedule. The multicast expansion has helped stabilize the network's overall reach even as its cable footprint has contracted.

The Versant spin-off

In 2025, Oxygen was among the NBCUniversal cable channels transferred into Versant, the separately traded company created from NBCUniversal's cable network portfolio. The spin-off, which followed Comcast's announcement of its intent to separate the cable properties, moved Oxygen alongside its sister cable networks into the new corporate structure while NBCUniversal retained its broadcast, film, and streaming businesses.

The transfer marked the latest corporate chapter for a network that has been owned by an independent startup, a broadcast giant, and now a standalone cable company. Throughout these changes, the Oxygen True Crime brand has remained the channel's on-air identity.

Brand and audience

Branded on air as Oxygen True Crime, the network targets viewers with an appetite for real-life crime stories, a genre whose audience skews heavily female. The channel's programming philosophy holds that there is nothing more compelling than reality, positioning its true crime series and police procedurals as an alternative to scripted drama. The network competes directly with Investigation Discovery for the true crime cable audience, alongside streaming platforms that have invested heavily in the genre.

The channel's evolution from a women's lifestyle network to a crime destination illustrates how cable networks have reinvented themselves to survive. Oxygen's true crime identity has proven more durable than its earlier incarnations, giving the network a clear position in a genre with demonstrated audience demand.

Digital presence

Oxygen's main digital home is oxygen.com, which offers full episodes, show information, and news about the network's true crime programming. The network maintains active social media accounts under the Oxygen True Crime brand, using them to promote its series and engage with the true crime community.

The channel's digital strategy emphasizes its crime programming across platforms, with on-demand and streaming availability complementing the linear and multicast feeds. As part of Versant's cable portfolio, Oxygen's digital platforms continue to serve its audience of true crime viewers. Its official website is https://www.oxygen.com.
