About Packreport
Packreport
Packreport — spelled packREPORT since 2020 — is the German-language specialist magazine for industrial packaging published by the dfv Mediengruppe in Frankfurt am Main. As the magazine for packaging professionals of the packing industry, it reports on the latest developments and applications of packaging and packing processes under technical and economic aspects — from consumer-goods packaging to transport and protective packaging. With a distributed circulation of 9,957 copies (IVW 4/2024), it has been the industry's trade medium for half a century: the dfv took over the title from the Berger-Verlag in 1975. Its current form is the flip-title packREPORT/packAKTUELL with the Swiss packaging magazine, appearing seven times a year with a refreshed editorial concept.
Overview
packREPORT is the specialist magazine for industrial packaging from the dfv Mediengruppe's technical trade media in Frankfurt am Main. The magazine and its digital platform report on the newest developments and applications of packaging and packing processes under technical and economic aspects: the consumer-goods packaging, the transport and protective packaging, the machines and the materials. The current concept — the flip-title with the Swiss packAKTUELL, "das Schweizer Fachmagazin für Verpackungstechnik und -design" — addresses the industry's transformation: rising raw-material and energy costs, new legal regulations, AI, the promotion of the circular economy. The editorial priorities: sustainability, the practice-oriented classification of legal regulations, the people of the industry — more detailed reports on the decision-makers — and the effects of artificial intelligence on the packaging industry's processes and offerings, with the editorial team critically illuminating both opportunities and challenges for business models. Each flip-magazine issue has a content-strong Swiss section. The rhythm is seven issues a year, plus a new multimedia magazine available from 3 p.m. on the day before publication. The online presences continue under packreport.de and packaktuell.ch. The publisher is Matthias Mahr (Herausgeber); the publishing manager of the dfv's technical trade media is Larissa Weightman. The print ISSN is 0342-3743.
History
The dfv Mediengruppe took over the title "packREPORT" from the Berger-Verlag in 1975 — the founding act of the magazine's dfv history, documented in the group's 80-year chronicle (1946–2026). In 1992 the Leipzig Fachbuchverlag's "Die Verpackung" merged into the Packreport — the East German packaging journal absorbed after reunification. In 2007 the frequency was reduced from twelve to ten issues a year. In 2020 two things happened: the spelling changed to packREPORT, and the dfv's "Packmittel" magazine was united with the Packreport — the consolidation of the group's packaging titles. The 2005 CeMAT cooperation — the "Kompetenzzentrum Verpackung" with the Deutsche Messe AG and the University of Dortmund's logistics department under Prof. Rolf Jansen, the Packreport reader's decade-long columnist — shows the magazine's trade-fair integration. The 2008 editorial strengthening — Thomas Röhl, the packaging-technology graduate and former Neue Verpackung editor-in-chief, becoming managing editor — documents the dfv's ambitions in the packaging market. The current relaunch — the flip-title with packAKTUELL, the refreshed concept, the seven-issue rhythm, the multimedia magazine — is the magazine's answer to the industry's transformation: the sustainability, the regulations, the AI. The flip-title is the editorial acknowledgement of the industry's geography: the German packing industry and the Swiss packaging technology and design belong together — the machines crossing the border, the regulations diverging, the sustainability uniting. Each issue's content-strong Swiss section gives the German readers the Swiss perspective: the packaging technology and design from the country of the precision packers. The multimedia magazine — from 3 p.m. on the day before — gives the digital readers the head start: the B2B journal's digital-first gesture. The IVW 4/2024 figures — 337 sold, 9,957 distributed — show the controlled-circulation B2B model: the free distribution to the industry's decision-makers.
Coverage and Content
The magazine's programme is industrial packaging under technical and economic aspects. The current concept's priorities: sustainability — the circular economy, the recyclates, the green packaging; the legal regulations — the practice-oriented classification of the new rules, the packaging law, the extended producer responsibility; the people — the detailed decision-maker reports, "from practice for practice"; the AI — the effects on processes and offerings, the critical illumination of opportunities and challenges for business models. The Swiss section in each issue carries the packAKTUELL content: the Swiss packaging technology and design. The historical programme — the consumer-goods packaging, the transport and protective packaging, the packing processes — continues within the new concept. The multimedia magazine — available from 3 p.m. on the day before the print publication — extends the rhythm into the digital. The packaging-360.com theme portal — the dfv's daily packaging news from trade and the consumer-goods industry — complements the magazine's depth with the daily news. The magazine's journalism is the B2B trade press's: the technical-economic reporting for the packing industry's professionals, the decision-makers who need the informed decision. The decision-maker reports — the new format's "more about the people of the industry" — give the B2B journal its human face: the executives, the engineers, the founders who shape the packing industry. The AI coverage — the critical illumination of opportunities and challenges for business models — addresses the industry's current transformation: the artificial intelligence in the packing line, in the design, in the logistics. The sustainability coverage — the circular economy's promotion, the recyclates, the green packaging — tracks the regulation-driven transformation: the industry that must reinvent its materials.
Organization and Ownership
packREPORT is published by the dfv Mediengruppe (Deutscher Fachverlag GmbH) in Frankfurt am Main — one of the largest independent specialist-media companies in Germany and Europe, with over 100 specialist journals, over 100 digital offerings, 500 specialist book titles and over 140 commercial events. The magazine appears within the Technical Trade Media division; the publishing manager is Larissa Weightman, the publisher (Herausgeber) is Matthias Mahr. The flip-title partner packAKTUELL is the Swiss specialist magazine for packaging technology and design. The 2016 C2 Coating & Converting acquisition — the converting industry's specialist media joining the dfv — extended the group's technology-environment-packaging programme alongside PackMittel and PackReport. The commercial model is the controlled-circulation B2B journal's: the 9,957 distributed copies (IVW 4/2024) reaching the packing industry's decision-makers free of charge, the 337 sold copies, the packaging industry's advertisers — the machine builders, the material producers, the trade-fair organisers — and the digital advertising on packreport.de and packaging-360.com. The annual subscription is listed at 207.58 euros including VAT. Detailed editorial-staff information beyond the publisher and publishing manager is not publicly confirmed in the sources available.
Digital Presence
The magazine's websites are packreport.de and packaktuell.ch — the continued online presences under the new concept. The multimedia magazine — available from 3 p.m. on the day before publication — is the digital-first extension. The packaging-360.com theme portal — "Trendthemen, die Entscheider bewegen – auf den Punkt gebracht!" — reports daily on packaging topics from trade and the consumer-goods industry, in German and English. The dfv's press portal documents the magazine's history: the 1975 Berger-Verlag takeover, the 2005 CeMAT competence centre, the 2008 editorial strengthening, the 2016 C2 acquisition, the current flip-title relaunch. In the German packaging trade-press landscape packREPORT occupies the dfv pole: alongside the independent Packaging Journal from Cologne's ella Verlag, the Frankfurt group's magazine is the half-century trade medium — from the 1975 Berger-Verlag takeover through the 1992 "Die Verpackung" merger, the 2020 Packmittel unification and the packAKTUELL flip-title, seven issues a year, in print, multimedia and online, for the packaging professionals of the packing industry — from Frankfurt, since 1975, without interruption, for the packing industry's professionals, every single issue, since 1975, from Frankfurt.
