About PCauto

PCauto

PCauto, published at pcauto.com.cn and known in English as the Pacific Auto Network, is a Guangzhou-based automotive portal in Guangdong, China, and one of the vertical websites of Pacific Online, the Hong Kong-listed internet group behind PConline. Founded in 2002 to publish car news, reviews, prices and dealer information, PCauto is a specialist outlet rather than a general news site: its whole editorial and commercial purpose is the car, from the first news of a new model to the quotations, specifications and dealer contacts a buyer needs before visiting a showroom. Its official website is https://www.pcauto.com.cn.

Founded in 2002 as a specialist car portal

PCauto was founded in 2002, according to profiles of the Pacific Online group and the site's own identity as the group's automotive network. That date places it in the period when China's consumer car market and China's internet were growing together, and when a general technology portal could no longer serve car buyers in enough depth. Pacific Online's original strength was PConline, its information technology and consumer electronics portal. PCauto applied the same vertical-portal model — detailed product databases, professional evaluation and market quotations — to automobiles instead of computers. The name itself states the formula: PC, inherited from the Pacific Computer tradition of the group, joined to auto, the subject the new portal was created to cover on its own.

The timing mattered editorially as well as commercially. A car is the largest purchase many households make after housing, and buyers researching one need a different kind of information from technology readers: model-by-model prices, trim and specification comparisons, test drives, ownership and after-sales information, and local dealer guidance. PCauto was built around exactly those needs, and group descriptions of the portal still define it in those terms — an automobile portal providing product information, brand review and testing, and after-sale information services.

Part of Pacific Online, the listed Guangzhou group

PCauto's owner, Pacific Online Limited, is an investment holding company whose main business is providing internet advertising services in China through a family of vertical portals. The group's annual reports list its portal addresses together: PConline for IT, PCauto for automobiles, PCgames for games, PClady for women and fashion, and, in later reports, PCbaby for parents and children and PChouse for home improvement. PCauto is therefore not a stand-alone blog or a single dealer's website. It is one segment — reported separately in the group's accounts — of a listed publisher whose business is specialist content sold to specialist advertisers.

Pacific Online listed on the main board of the Hong Kong stock market in 2007, with stock code 543. Contemporary reporting on the initial public offering said the company raised HK$940.5 million, about US$121 million, after pricing above the mid-point of its range, and described PCauto at that time as China's second-largest portal by advertising revenue specialising in automobile-related content, while PConline was described as the largest such portal for IT product content. The group's principal place of business in its early annual reports was in Tianhe, Guangzhou, and company profiles continue to place Pacific Online in Guangzhou. Lam Wai Yan, named in those reports as chairman and chief executive officer, led the group through that listed era.

Guangzhou base and national city coverage

PCauto is based in Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong, but its market is national. Pacific Online's 2007 annual report records how deliberately that national reach was built: to broaden its reach, the group extended PCauto's city coverage to 14 areas in 2007, adding Jiangsu, Wuhan, Chongqing, Henan and Sichuan, in its words to capture increasingly affluent Chinese consumers in those areas. That local structure remains central to what an automobile portal does. National news about a model launch is the same everywhere in China, but the price a reader can actually pay, the dealer who can supply the car and the offers available locally are not. PCauto's local guides and directories — the feature stressed in descriptions of the PCauto segment, which provides comprehensive product information on domestic and international automobiles through its local guides and directories — are the mechanism that turns national car content into a local buying decision.

Guangzhou itself is a fitting home for such a portal. It is both the group's home city and one of China's major metropolitan car markets, in a province, Guangdong, whose large and affluent population was an early centre of private car ownership. A Guangzhou newsroom producing for a national network of city pages is the pattern PCauto has followed since the expansion recorded in 2007.

News, reviews and test drives

Editorially, PCauto combines three kinds of automotive journalism. The first is news: new model launches, price announcements, industry developments and sales trends, presented on its homepage as a fast-moving stream of car news, new-car coverage and industry stories, with dedicated sections for new cars, buying guidance, industry and new-energy vehicles. The second is evaluation: professional reviews and test drives, including the long-running test-drive video and article formats visible on the current site, in which a model is driven, measured and judged on space, interior, technology and driving performance rather than simply described from a press release. The third is reference publishing: for each model, pages bringing together its quotation, picture gallery and specifications and configuration, so that a reader can move from a review to a direct comparison of versions and prices without leaving the portal.

That reference layer is what distinguishes a vertical portal from a car magazine published online. A magazine article ends when it is read; a PCauto model page continues to work as a database entry, updated with prices and configurations and linked to dealers, rankings and related models. The homepage's popularity rankings — organised separately for new-energy cars, saloons, SUVs and MPVs, with each entry offering quotation, pictures and specifications — show the same database logic applied to market attention: readers can see which models are drawing interest in each body category and go straight from a ranking to the underlying product data.

Prices, dealers and the buying process

PCauto's second function, alongside journalism, is to serve readers who are actively buying. Its site offers recommended dealers, purchase-discount and offer information, buying guides that walk through questions such as what charges can be avoided, what to check when collecting a car and how purchase subsidies and trade-in arrangements work, and question-and-answer content organised under headings such as choosing a car, buying and using a car, comparisons and recommendations, and purchase offers. Group descriptions of the international PCauto platform describe the same toolkit in general terms: an extensive automotive database, brand-by-brand review sections, comparison of models by price and specifications, and sales information to help users understand market trends and the popularity of different models.

For advertisers, that buying intent is the commercial point of the portal. Pacific Online's business is internet advertising, and a reader comparing two named models by price and specification is a far more valuable audience for a manufacturer or dealer than a general news reader. PCauto's content and its advertising are therefore aligned by design: the reviews, databases and local dealer pages attract precisely the readers its advertisers — car brands and dealers — most want to reach.

Revenue growth and importance to the group

PCauto's weight inside Pacific Online is documented in the group's own results. Revenue for PCauto rose by 102 per cent in 2007, from RMB33.5 million for the year ended 31 December 2006 to RMB67.7 million for the year ended 31 December 2007, as the group said it was leveraging PCauto's leading position to capture rising internet advertising spending by domestic and multinational automobile manufacturers. By 2009 the portal's revenue had reached RMB149.9 million, up 39.3 per cent from RMB107.6 million in 2008, growing far faster in that year than the group's more mature IT portal.

The clearest statement of PCauto's standing came in the group's full-year 2012 results. PCauto revenue increased by 17.3 per cent, from RMB293.9 million in 2011 to RMB344.6 million in 2012, and accounted for 48.2 per cent of total group revenue in 2012, up from 45.9 per cent in 2011 — a larger share than PConline's 37.2 per cent. The group's chairman described PCauto in that announcement as its largest vertical portal in terms of revenue. A portal founded a decade earlier as a spin-out from a computer website had become the single biggest business of the listed group that owned it.

Position among China's car websites

PCauto belongs to the generation of Chinese vertical portals that professionalised online car information before social media and short video reshaped car marketing. Its competitors for the car buyer's attention are other large automotive platforms, but its identity within that field is specific: it is the automobile arm of the Pacific family, sharing a naming pattern, a Guangzhou base and an advertising business with sister portals covering technology, games, fashion, parenting and the home. Reporting on its 2007 listing already treated it as one of the country's leading automobile-content portals by advertising revenue, and its subsequent revenue record — overtaking PConline within its own group — supports that early assessment without needing any claim that it stood alone in the market.

The brand has also been used beyond the mainland site. In November 2024, PCauto announced the launch of an enhanced automotive marketplace platform aimed at consumers in Malaysia and Thailand, through pcauto.com, describing itself as a professional and comprehensive automotive information service provider offering a platform for enthusiasts and consumers to view, select and buy cars, with a database spanning brands from Toyota and Honda to Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, BMW and Tesla. That Southeast Asian marketplace is a separate operation from the Chinese portal at pcauto.com.cn, but it shows the same model — database, reviews, prices and comparison tools — being exported under the PCauto name.

How readers use the site

Readers arrive at PCauto at different stages, and the site is organised to hold all of them. Enthusiasts follow launches, rankings and test drives. Families comparing, for example, a seven-seat model within a set budget use the question, comparison and recommendation content. Committed buyers go furthest into the database: a model's quotation, gallery and specifications, the offers attached to it, and the recommended dealers through whom it can be bought. Video test drives, picture-led car viewing and the site's mobile app, promoted on its homepage, serve readers who research on phones rather than desktops. In each case the journey the portal is designed for is the same — from interest, through verified product information, to a dealer and a purchase.

Why PCauto matters

PCauto matters as a record of how China's car market learned to buy online. Founded in Guangzhou in 2002 as Pacific Online's automotive network, it turned the vertical-portal method — specialist news, professional testing, a structured model database, local prices and dealer information — into the largest revenue earner of a Hong Kong-listed internet group, passing its older technology sibling in the process. For readers in Guangzhou, Guangdong and across China, it remains what it was built to be: a single destination where car news, reviews, prices and dealer information sit together, published at pcauto.com.cn.
