About Pitaara TV

Pitaara TV is a Punjabi-language movie channel in India, headquartered in Chandigarh and owned by Paul E-Commerce Private Limited. Launched on March 26, 2016, under managing director Sandeep Bansal, the channel billed itself as the world's first Punjabi movie channel — "Pitaara: Filma Da" — and set out to give Punjabi cinema, known as Pollywood, a dedicated round-the-clock television home. Its schedule is built around Punjabi feature films across comedy, romance and action, supplemented by film music, celebrity interviews and industry programming. In August 2021 the group extended the Pitaara brand into streaming with Chaupal, a multi-regional over-the-top platform serving Punjabi, Haryanvi and Bhojpuri content. The channel's official website is pitaara.tv.

History and Launch

Pitaara TV was launched on March 26, 2016, by Paul E-Commerce Pvt. Ltd., a Chandigarh-based company led by managing director Sandeep Bansal. The launch addressed a conspicuous gap in Indian television: while Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and other languages had long-established movie channels, Punjabi cinema — despite a growing theatrical industry and a massive music culture — had no dedicated film channel. Pitaara TV positioned itself as the world's first Punjabi movie channel, a claim it carried in its branding as "Pitaara: Filma Da."

The channel's rollout on distribution platforms gathered pace through 2017. It became available on Fastway cable in Punjab at channel number 60, where its launch was promoted as the year's biggest entertainment arrival for Punjabi viewers, and its picture quality and programming drew enthusiastic early responses from satellite-television communities. An Android app with live TV followed, giving the channel a mobile presence alongside its linear broadcast. The early schedule mixed film premieres with shows and music, and titles such as Carry On Jatta, Jatt & Juliet, Rupinder Gandhi 2 and Nikka Zaildar 2 featured in its line-up.

Ownership: Paul E-Commerce and Sandeep Bansal

Pitaara TV is owned by Paul E-Commerce Private Limited, with Sandeep Bansal as managing director. The company's decision to launch a Punjabi movie channel reflected a bet on the commercial maturation of Pollywood: by the mid-2010s, Punjabi films were regularly achieving significant box-office numbers, the industry's star system — led by names such as Gippy Grewal, Diljit Dosanjh, Amrinder Gill and Neeru Bajwa — was well established, and the audience for Punjabi entertainment extended far beyond Punjab into the diaspora.

Bansal has remained the public face of the group's media ambitions, steering both the television channel and its later streaming expansion. The group's corporate structure spans the linear channel and the OTT business: Chaupal, the streaming platform launched in 2021, is owned by Bosna Digital Entertainment Pvt. Ltd., with Bansal as managing director — keeping the television and digital operations under common leadership while housing them in separate companies.

Programming and the Film Library

Pitaara TV's schedule is built around Punjabi feature films, programmed 24x7 across the genres that define Pollywood's commercial output: comedy, romance and action. Comedy has been the backbone of modern Punjabi cinema — films such as the Jatt & Juliet series, Carry On Jatta and the Nikka Zaildar films are among the industry's biggest hits — and the channel's line-up leans into these audience favourites alongside romantic dramas and action titles.

Beyond films, the channel programmes music and industry content. Its YouTube presence describes the offering as round-the-clock comedy, romance and action-packed Punjabi movies, plus updates from the Punjabi music and film industry, exclusive celebrity interviews and talk formats. The Pitaara podcast series features long-form conversations with Pollywood personalities such as Mandy Takhar, giving the brand a foothold in interview and talk programming that complements the film schedule. The channel's positioning as "one of the largest online platforms" for Pollywood updates reflects an early recognition that a movie channel's brand must live on digital platforms as well as on television.

Pollywood and the Channel's Industry Role

Pitaara TV's arrival coincided with Punjabi cinema's most commercially successful period. The industry had moved beyond its earlier low-budget phase into professionally produced films with national distribution, and a dedicated movie channel gave producers a new window for their films after the theatrical run — a satellite-rights market that is a crucial revenue stream for regional film industries. By providing a reliable buyer and showcase for Punjabi films, the channel strengthened the economics of Pollywood production.

The channel has also formalised its relationship with the industry through partnerships. In 2020 it announced a collaboration with Humble Motion Pictures, the production house associated with the Punjabi entertainment industry, aligning the channel with a pipeline of new film content. Such partnerships — between broadcaster and producer — are the mechanism by which movie channels secure premiere rights and exclusive content, and Pitaara TV's pursuit of them signalled its ambition to compete for first-run Punjabi films rather than merely recycling library titles.

Chaupal: The OTT Expansion

In August 2021, Pitaara TV launched Chaupal, a multi-regional over-the-top streaming platform offering entertainment in Punjabi, Haryanvi and Bhojpuri. The name "Chaupal" refers to the traditional community gathering space in North Indian villages, and the platform was conceived as a digital equivalent — a place where speakers of different languages could gather for entertainment. At launch, Chaupal offered 12 originals (films and web series), 50 exclusives and more than 300 movies, which the company described as the largest Punjabi and Bhojpuri film catalogue in the streaming market, with a commitment to release two new web series and two new movies every month.

The launch originals included the thriller film Panchhi, starring Prince Kanwaljit and Aarushi Sharma, and the suspense web series Vardaat, and the platform's catalogue spans movies, web series, podcasts, music and documentaries. Chaupal is globally available, with apps on iOS, Android, Android TV, Amazon Fire devices and Samsung devices, and it offers tiered subscription plans varying by resolution, simultaneous streams and download allowances. The move into streaming positioned the Pitaara group alongside the broader industry shift toward direct-to-consumer regional content, giving it a second revenue stream beyond linear advertising.

Partnerships and Collaborations

Pitaara TV has pursued partnerships to extend its reach and content pipeline. Its collaboration with Humble Motion Pictures, announced in November 2020, tied the channel to one of Pollywood's active production houses. In September 2021, the short-video app Josh — launched in August 2020 by VerSe Innovation and then among India's fastest-growing short-video platforms — partnered with Pitaara TV and Chaupal to promote original shows, music and films, with Josh creators given opportunities to feature in Chaupal's upcoming projects. The partnership reflected the convergence of short video, streaming and television in India's regional entertainment market.

The group has also partnered with Xiaomi, the smartphone and smart-TV maker, extending the Pitaara brand onto connected devices. Together, these collaborations show a distribution strategy that spans linear television, streaming apps, short video and device partnerships — an unusually broad approach for a regional broadcaster, and one aimed at reaching Punjabi audiences wherever they watch.

Distribution and Availability

Pitaara TV is distributed on cable and direct-to-home platforms in India, with Fastway cable in Punjab as its launch platform at channel number 60. The channel is also available on DTH operators and on streaming platforms: in 2023, YuppTV — described as the largest internet-based TV platform for South Asian content abroad — added Pitaara TV to its FAST (free ad-supported streaming TV) portfolio for worldwide distribution, with the channel's vice president for strategic partnerships, Mahesh Sharma, framing the move as part of a mission to reach every Punjabi household worldwide.

The YuppTV launch gave Pitaara TV a global free-to-air streaming presence to complement Chaupal's subscription offering, serving the large Punjabi diaspora in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and elsewhere. The channel's Android app with live TV provides an additional direct-to-consumer route for viewers in India. This multi-platform distribution — linear cable and DTH, FAST streaming, subscription OTT and mobile apps — reflects the fragmented reality of reaching regional-language audiences in the 2020s.

Digital and Social Presence

Pitaara TV has cultivated a substantial digital footprint. Its YouTube channel carries promos, film-related content, celebrity interviews and the Pitaara podcast series, and it has described itself as one of the largest online platforms for Pollywood news, exclusive interviews and industry gossip. The channel is active on Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter) and Snapchat, using social platforms to promote premieres, share film updates and engage with younger Punjabi audiences.

The digital strategy serves the linear channel in two ways: it builds the Pitaara brand among viewers who may not watch linear television regularly, and it creates promotional inventory for the films and shows on the channel. The Josh partnership extended this further, giving the group's originals and films exposure to the short-video audience. For a regional broadcaster, this kind of digital surround is increasingly the price of remaining relevant to audiences under thirty.
