About Plenty Valley FM

Plenty Valley FM

Plenty Valley FM 88.6 (call sign 3PVR) is a community radio station based in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia — "Your Local Station" for the north-eastern fringe. Broadcasting on 88.6 MHz FM from studios at 284 Childs Road, Mill Park, it serves the Cities of Whittlesea and Banyule and the Shire of Nillumbik — and is the designated emergency broadcaster for the area. It began transmission in 1987, with regular broadcasting from 17 December 1990.

The Plenty Valley that the station serves is Melbourne's great growth frontier: the Plenty Valley corridor — Mill Park, South Morang, Mernda, Doreen — the new suburbs rising from the farmland, among the fastest-growing districts in Australia — and the contrasts: the established Banyule (Heidelberg, Ivanhoe, Greensborough), the green-wedge Nillumbik (Eltham's mud-brick, Diamond Creek, Hurstbridge, Kangaroo Ground, the fire-prone bush fringe), the rural Whittlesea township. It is the city's edge: the new estates and the old orchards, the multicultural arrivals and the farming families — and the community station is its voice: the emergency broadcaster for the fire fringe, the football caller for the northern league, the languages of the new Australia.

Overview

Plenty Valley FM's identity is the outer north-east: the growth suburbs of Mill Park, South Morang, Mernda, Doreen, Whittlesea — and the semi-rural Nillumbik (Eltham, Diamond Creek, Hurstbridge, Kangaroo Ground) and Banyule (Greensborough, Heidelberg, Ivanhoe). The format — music and community — spans the daytime magazine shows (10 am–2 pm workdays, the drive-time presenters), the evening international programmes (6 pm–midnight: Sinhala, Romani, Tamil, Arabic, Greek, Lebanese, Macedonian, Samoan, Fijian, Punjabi, Italian), the weekend sport — and the award-winning Northern Football Netball League coverage: the Match of the Day every winter Saturday, 1–5 pm, with the hour-long preview and the live feature match.

The station's emergency-broadcaster role — the first community station in Melbourne recognised as a designated emergency services station for disasters — is the community's lifeline: the fire-prone Nillumbik fringe, the storm warnings, the vital Emergency Advice & Warnings link.

History

Plenty Valley FM's early history (1987–1998) is the community-radio founding epic: the test broadcasts from 1987, the Australian Broadcasting Tribunal acknowledging the group's application as "the most professional and best presented of the eight cases under evaluation," the December 1990 final test simulating the planned programming — and the ABA's warrant confirmation mid-test: regular broadcasting commenced 17 December 1990 (5 pm–midnight weekdays, 7 am–midnight weekends).

The early achievements — the community-radio firsts — tell the station's ambition: live local football during the season; the first Melbourne community station recognised for emergency services; the musical scholarship for a local musician; the weekly Salvation Army church service; the Diamond Valley Council meetings; state and federal election coverage; training for unemployed youth; the annual Greensborough Inter-Church Festival of Family carols (recorded for Christmas Day rebroadcast); the hour-long London link-up (both stations broadcasting simultaneously). The volunteers' "immense sense of achievement and pride" built the non-profit service.

The decades since — the Mill Park studios, the 88.6 frequency, the NFNL partnership, the multicultural evenings, the emergency-broadcaster designation — are the station's maturity: the outer north-east's community radio, since 1987.

Programming

Plenty Valley FM's schedule — music and community:

  • Workdays (10 am–2 pm), Afternoons (2–4 pm), Drive (4–6 pm) — the magazine shows: local issues, sport, traffic, weather, community announcements, varied music.
  • International programmes (6 pm–midnight) — Swarna FM & Laka Mihira (Sinhala), The Romani Show, Vanna Amuthama (Tamil), Darol Salam (Arabic), Rhythm & News (Greek), Lebanese, Macedonian, Samoa E Tasi, Jhankaro (Fijian), Punjabi, Pronto (Italian): the multicultural north-east's languages.
  • Northern Football Netball League — Saturdays 1–5 pm (winter): the preview hour, the live Match of the Day, the award-winning commentary, the scores from all three senior divisions.
  • Overnight music, weekend specialists — the community's nights and weekends.
