Prajnan: Journal of Banking and Financial Management
Prajnan is the quarterly academic journal of the National Institute of Bank Management (NIBM) in Pune, Maharashtra. Established in 1972 and now published in association with SAGE under the title PRAJNAN: Journal of Banking and Financial Management, it is a double-anonymised peer-reviewed journal dedicated to advancing knowledge in banking and financial management through theoretical, empirical and policy-oriented research. With ISSN 0970-8448, indexing in EBSCO, ProQuest and other databases, and a place in the UGC CARE List, Prajnan has served for over five decades as one of the principal research forums of India's banking system — the journal of the apex institution that the Reserve Bank of India created to think about bank management.
The National Institute of Bank Management
Prajnan is published under the aegis of the National Institute of Bank Management, described by its publisher as the apex institution for banking education, research and training in India. NIBM was founded in 1969 by the Reserve Bank of India, in consultation with the Government of India, as an autonomous apex institution for research, training, education and consultancy in bank management, envisioned as a centre of excellence and as a think tank for the banking system. Its associate members include the State Bank of India, nationalised banks and foreign banks, and its Pune campus at Kondhwe Khurd runs executive training, research and a postgraduate diploma programme in banking and financial services. A journal was part of the institute's work from early on: since its inception NIBM has brought out books, journals, reports and working papers in tandem with its research and training functions.
Launched in 1972
Prajnan was launched in 1972, only three years after the institute itself, initially styled as a journal of social and management sciences and described by NIBM as a leading refereed quarterly journal. Its registration record — ISSN 0970-8448 and registration with the Registrar of Newspapers for India under number 20878/71 — dates its formal identity to the very beginning of the 1970s, the era of bank nationalisation and rapid geographic expansion of Indian banking. The institute's early publications included fourteen programmed learning texts on operational banking produced to meet the training needs of new entrants during that branch-expansion decade; Prajnan was the research counterpart to that training material, the place where the management of a rapidly growing, socially directed banking system could be studied and debated at article length.
Mission: Dialogue Among Scholars, Practitioners and Regulators
In its current SAGE presentation, Prajnan serves as a forum for the dissemination of original research on a wide array of issues relevant to banks, financial institutions, and the broader economic and regulatory environment in which they operate. Its mission is not only to advance academic inquiry but also to facilitate informed dialogue among scholars, practitioners, policymakers and regulators, fostering cross-sectoral engagement so that the journal contributes to the development of sound financial policy and practice. That four-way audience — scholar, banker, policymaker, regulator — reflects the composition of NIBM itself, an institute owned by the central bank and the banking industry jointly. Few journals anywhere are so directly positioned between a financial system and its regulator, and Prajnan's editorial identity is built on that position.
Double-Anonymised Peer Review
Prajnan operates as a double-anonymised peer-reviewed publication, upholding what its publisher calls rigorous academic standards and offering a credible platform for high-quality theoretical, empirical and policy-oriented research. Submissions are handled through SAGE's manuscript submission system for the journal, and authors are invited to submit original research articles in all areas of banking and finance to the editor at NIBM, Pune. The journal's editorial board, NIBM notes, consists of renowned academicians of international repute, and its editors have been drawn from the institute's senior finance faculty — Professor Sanjay Basu, Professor of Finance at NIBM, has signed editorial matter as the journal's editor, and Professor Arindam Bandyopadhyay, a senior NIBM finance professor and dean, has also been associated with the editorship of Prajnan.
Subject Coverage in Banking and Finance
The journal's research territory covers the full working agenda of a modern banking system. Recent issue contents illustrate the range: a decadal benchmarking of the Indian financial system against global peers; a comparative study of operational efficiency and customer-centric offerings in fostering customer satisfaction among commercial banks in Tripura, based on a survey of 224 respondents and bank performance indicators between 2013 and 2021, which found customer satisfaction driven by loyalty, trust and customer-centric products rather than operational efficiency alone; and a comparative study of cyber security standards and frameworks, examining banks' preparedness in India against global standards and arguing for continuous upgrading of cyber security frameworks as threats expand. Monetary questions, including research on managing a managed float, also fall within its remit. Banking, finance and monetary issues relevant to India's financial sector — the journal's founding brief — remain its organising frame.
Indexing and Dissemination
Prajnan is listed and abstracted in global electronic databases including EBSCO and ProQuest, linked to Google Scholar and the Indian Citation Index, and listed in the UGC CARE List, ensuring coverage by major indexation databases relied upon in Indian academia. This indexing stack matters doubly for a banking journal: it serves the academic authors — doctoral scholars from reputed universities and management faculty, whom NIBM identifies as the journal's contributors — who need recognised outlets, and it places practitioner-relevant Indian banking research into the international discovery systems used by libraries worldwide. Digital dissemination through SAGE now extends that reach, with the journal presented on SAGE's India platform alongside the publisher's other Indian social-science titles.
Prajnan and Vinimaya: NIBM's Two Journals
Prajnan is one of two quarterly journals in English that NIBM has published regularly since its early decades. Its companion, Vinimaya, launched in 1979, presents the conceptual and practical viewpoints of bankers and management educationists — a bankers' journal where banking professionals and executives publish, sharing professional knowledge and practical insights for serious readers of banking and bank management. The pairing is deliberate and complementary: Vinimaya carries the practitioner's voice, while Prajnan is the academic research publication, addressed to research scholars and faculty and held to refereed standards. Together the two journals let the institute speak in both registers of banking knowledge — experience and evidence — and a reader following both gets a fuller picture of Indian banking thought than either title alone provides.
The SAGE Chapter
The journal's association with SAGE marks its modern phase. SAGE presents PRAJNAN: Journal of Banking and Financial Management as an established title of 1972, published under NIBM's aegis, with manuscript submission run through SAGE's peer-review platform. Association with a major international social-science publisher brings standardised production, global marketing and digital hosting to a journal that began as an institute quarterly in Pune, while ownership and editorial control remain with the institute. The pattern — Indian institutional ownership, international publishing partnership — is one Prajnan shares with several leading Indian journals of its generation, and it reflects a practical judgement: the research community the journal serves is Indian and banking-specific, but the infrastructure of modern scholarly publishing is global.
A Journal of India's Financial Transformation
A quarterly founded in 1972 has necessarily chronicled the entire modern history of Indian finance. Prajnan's early decades coincided with nationalised banking, priority-sector lending and branch expansion; its later volumes with liberalisation, prudential regulation, technology-driven banking and the rise of digital payments; its recent issues with customer-centricity, financial benchmarking against global peers and cyber risk. Because its contributors include both university scholars and researchers inside the banking system, the journal captures not only how Indian banking changed, but how the system explained those changes to itself. For students of Indian financial history — and for the bankers and regulators who form its core readership — that long, refereed, Pune-published record is Prajnan's distinctive contribution to the country's magazine and journal landscape.
Prajnan Today
Today Prajnan continues as a quarterly, double-anonymised peer-reviewed journal from the National Institute of Bank Management at Kondhwe Khurd, Pune, published with SAGE and dedicated to banking and financial management. More than fifty years after its 1972 launch, it remains what NIBM built it to be: the research journal of India's apex bank-management institute, indexed in EBSCO, ProQuest and the UGC CARE List, and addressed to scholars, practitioners, policymakers and regulators alike. In a directory of Indian magazines it belongs to the small class of titles whose authority derives from the institution behind them — in this case, an institute founded by the Reserve Bank of India itself — and whose pages constitute a primary record of Indian banking thought across five decades.
