About Pro TV International

Pro TV International: Pro TV's Entertainment Channel for Romanians Abroad

Pro TV International — Pro TV Internațional in Romanian — is the international television channel of Pro TV, Romania's leading commercial broadcaster. Owned by PRO TV SRL within Central European Media Enterprises, it broadcasts the programmes of Pro TV and its sister channels to Romanian audiences abroad, assembling a schedule of news, entertainment, series and films for the diaspora. The channel started broadcasting on 1 December 2000, exactly five years after the launch of the main Pro TV channel, and it grew to become, by 2011, the second most-distributed European ethnic channel, behind only the international service of Russia's Channel One.

For Romanian viewers in the United Kingdom, Pro TV International is the commercial counterpart to the public TVRi: where TVRi offers the public broadcaster's Romania, Pro TV International offers the Romania of the country's most popular private network — its hit talent shows, its flagship news, its entertainment magazines and its drama. British Romanians are part of one of Europe's largest Romanian communities, and this channel, carried by satellite and streaming services for expatriate audiences, is built precisely for viewers like them.

Overview

Pro TV International is a general entertainment channel in Romanian, broadcasting in 16:9 standard definition at 576i. Its schedule is compiled rather than originated: at the renewal of its licence in 2018, 44 per cent of its programming consisted of productions from Pro TV, 52 per cent came from Romanian third-party producers, and the remaining 4 per cent was made specifically for the channel — the folk television programme Acasă la români. That single original production is telling: a programme about and for Romanians at home in their traditions, made exclusively for the audience abroad, sitting inside a schedule otherwise designed to replicate the experience of watching Romanian television in Romania.

The channel's proposition is familiarity. Emigrant viewers get Pro TV's news judgement, its entertainment brands and its stars, without needing to be in Romania — and the broadcaster gets to keep its audience, and its advertising and subscription value, even after that audience has moved to London, Madrid or Milan.

History and Launch

Pro TV International started broadcasting on 1 December 2000. At the beginning, its schedule was limited to Pro TV's main in-house productions, such as the news, Question of the Day and The Great Vacation. Over time the offer increased: alongside original productions from the main channel, the international service added a selection of productions from Acasă, Pro TV's female-skewing sister channel, and began producing its own programmes, of which Acasă la români became the enduring example. The channel switched to the 16:9 widescreen format in April 2012, and in May 2009 it had been added to the Portuguese cable provider MEO, one of many carriage deals that followed Romanian emigration around Europe.

Two dates frame the channel's maturity. By 2011 it was, as noted, the second most-distributed European ethnic channel — a remarkable position for a service barely a decade old, reflecting both the scale of Romanian emigration and Pro TV's dominance at home. Then, on 28 August 2017, the channel adopted, together with its sister channels, a uniform brand: for the first time in its history its logo matched the main Pro TV channel, with the word INTERNAȚIONAL added below. Before then, the international channel's logo had been slightly different from the main channel's; the 2017 change signalled that the diaspora service was to be presented as fully part of the Pro family, not a side project.

Ownership and Operator

Pro TV International is owned by PRO TV SRL and forms part of Central European Media Enterprises, the broadcasting group known as CME, itself owned by the PPF Group. CME launched the main Pro TV channel in 1995 and operates a portfolio of channels in Romania. The parent channel's origins lie with Adrian Sârbu, who received the licence for Bucharest's Canal 31 in June 1993 and, on 11 March 1994, found a foreign partner in CME to launch the channel nationally as Pro TV. Pro TV was the fourth private television channel in Romania, modelled on Western European and American principles, and it reshaped Romanian television — bringing viewers onto the streets, popularising new programme forms and launching a line of local celebrities. Pro TV International is the direct descendant of that project: the export version of Romania's most successful commercial television brand.

Within the group, the international channel is operated as a compilation service of PRO TV SRL, clearing and scheduling content from the flagship and sister channels for territories outside Romania. Its website presence runs through protv.ro, the main Pro TV site listed for the service in this directory.

Programming and Schedule

News on the channel is led by Știrile Pro TV, the flagship news of the main channel, whose primetime editions are among Romania's most watched news programmes. Current affairs depth comes from România, te iubesc, Pro TV's acclaimed investigative and reportage strand. Entertainment is where the channel's inheritance is richest: Apropo TV, the entertainment magazine; Ce spun românii, the game show format; Vorbește lumea, the daytime magazine; Doctor de bine, the health programme; and I Like It, the technology show, all feature in the channel's listed programming, alongside lifestyle formats such as Lecții de viață and the motoring show Superspeed.

The biggest brand in the schedule is Românii au talent — Romania's Got Talent — the talent show that is one of the main channel's defining hits and exactly the kind of programme emigrant audiences organise their viewing around. Series and films from Pro TV and Acasă fill the drama slots, and Acasă la români, the channel's own folk programme, provides the bespoke diaspora content: traditional music and rural Romanian culture, programmed for viewers whose distance from home makes such programming more, not less, valuable. The 2018 licence figures — 44 per cent Pro TV productions, 52 per cent Romanian third-party productions, 4 per cent original — describe a schedule that is overwhelmingly Romanian-made, a deliberate contrast with diaspora channels padded with cheap imports.

Availability and Platforms

Pro TV International is distributed worldwide to Romanian audiences abroad, through satellite, cable and streaming arrangements in the countries where Romanians have settled. Its addition to Portugal's MEO cable service in May 2009 is a documented example of its European cable carriage, following the same emigration map — Iberia, Italy, France, Germany and the United Kingdom — as its public rival. The channel broadcasts in standard definition, 576i, in 16:9, and its programmes are also part of the Pro group's streaming world: the main network launched its Pro TV Plus streaming service in August 2014, replaced in 2021 by Voyo, which carries the Pro channels' series and original shows.

For UK viewers, the channel is available through the satellite and streaming routes that serve the Romanian community in Britain, and its listed website is protv.ro. In practice, diaspora viewing of Pro TV International in the UK happens on the same screens as other Romanian television: satellite receivers aimed at European positions, smart TV apps and operator packages aimed at expatriate households.

Audience and Market

The channel's market is the Romanian diaspora, and its scale is attested by that 2011 ranking as Europe's second most-distributed ethnic channel. Romanian emigration after EU accession created large communities across Western Europe, and the United Kingdom's Romanian population grew to become one of the country's largest migrant communities. Those viewers sustain a competitive market in Romanian diaspora media, in which Pro TV International's chief rival is the free-to-air public service TVRi; Pro TV International counters with the commercial flagship's entertainment firepower — bigger formats, bigger stars, and the news brand that leads Romanian ratings at home.

The audience economics are those of ethnic television everywhere: viewers who are underserved by host-country media, who value language and cultural familiarity, and who are attractive to advertisers and operators precisely because a dedicated channel reaches them so efficiently. For second-generation Romanians in Britain, the channel offers immersion in the language and popular culture of their parents' country, from talent shows to folk music.

Sister Services

Pro TV International's sister channels are the rest of the Pro family: Pro TV itself, the flagship free-to-air network launched on 1 December 1995; Acasă TV, the female-skewing channel whose productions have fed the international schedule since its early years; Pro Arena, the sports channel; Pro Cinema, the film channel; and Acasă Gold. The group also operates Pro TV Chișinău, a dedicated service for the Republic of Moldova launched in September 1999, which broadcasts Pro TV Bucharest programmes alongside local news and advertising on its own grid — a sister in spirit to the international channel, since both exist to serve Romanian-speaking audiences beyond the flagship's home footprint, and the international channel's broadcast area has itself been described as extending to Moldova, Ukraine and Bulgaria alongside the wider diaspora.

Notable Programmes and People

Știrile Pro TV is the channel's news flagship, and its slogan in Romania — "We give the exact news" — travelled with it abroad. România, te iubesc gives the schedule journalistic prestige; its campaigning reports have, in the main channel's history, been credited with real-world effects, part of the body of work for which Pro TV received the NAB International Broadcasting Excellence Award, whose jury highlighted programmes on animal cruelty, child welfare, life after death and deforestation that led to legal and social changes in Romania. Românii au talent is the entertainment crown, while Acasă la români holds a unique place as the programme made only for this channel and its audience abroad.

The founding figure behind the brand is Adrian Sârbu, who created Canal 31, brought in CME and launched Pro TV as a Western-style private network; his innovations in the 1990s — street-level reporting, event television such as the Te uiți și câștigi lottery-style programmes presented by Florin Călinescu — created the confident, popular television that Pro TV International now exports. The channel's on-screen identity has even extended to its voice: in October 2020 the international channel's voice-over passed from Bebe Cotimanis to Florin Piersic Jr, a small detail that diaspora viewers, who hear that voice daily, noticed and discussed.

Recent Developments

The 2017 uniform rebrand integrated the channel fully into the modern Pro identity, and the group's streaming transition — Pro TV Plus in 2014, then Voyo from 2021 — has progressively given diaspora audiences on-demand access to the same series the channel schedules linearly. The main network's own evolution continues to feed the international service: Pro TV marked its thirtieth anniversary in 2025, with a new logo revealed in June 2025 and expected to launch around 1 December 2025, the anniversary date the whole Pro family shares with the international channel's own launch day.

A quarter of a century after it began with a handful of Pro TV's in-house programmes, Pro TV International remains the commercial voice of Romanian television abroad. For Romanians in the United Kingdom, it delivers the talent shows, news, series and folk traditions of home from the country's leading private broadcaster — evidence that, in diaspora television, the strongest product is simply the television people would be watching if they had never left.
