About Professional Motor Mechanic

Professional Motor Mechanic

Professional Motor Mechanic, known throughout its trade as PMM, is the United Kingdom's magazine for independent garage businesses and the technicians who work in them. Published by Hamerville Media Group from Watford, in Hertfordshire, it is read by nearly 60,000 independent garage technicians every month and describes itself, through its publisher, as the trade publication for motor industry servicing and repair professionals. PMM appears eleven times a year, is distributed through motor factors across the country so that technicians pick it up where they buy parts, and is supported by a website carrying technical content, videos and news. Its mixture is practical: technical articles and case studies to help readers fix modern vehicles, business and legal advice to help them run profitable workshops, and reporting on the regulations, from the MOT test to electric vehicles, that shape their working lives.

Publisher, Base and Distribution Through Motor Factors

PMM is published by Hamerville Media Group Limited, whose address for the magazine is Regal House, Regal Way, Watford, postcode WD24 4YF. Its distribution model is the key to its reach: copies are available to automotive technicians at the point of purchase, through leading motor factors around the country, which puts the magazine directly into the hands of working technicians rather than relying on newsstand sales. Audited figures lodged with ABC for July 2019 to June 2020 recorded a print edition of 57,539 copies and a digital edition of 2,382 copies for a monitored issue, with monthly issues in that period distributing roughly 58,000 to 59,000 copies through motor factors; the publisher's current summary rounds the audience as nearly 60,000 independent UK garage technicians reading the magazine every month. The June 2020 issue was merged into a combined summer issue because of the coronavirus pandemic, a detail recorded in the ABC certificate. PMM is published eleven times a year, with a combined summer issue, and its archive of PDF editions is available through its website.

Twenty Years of PMM

The magazine marked a significant anniversary at the start of this decade: its publisher's features planning for 2020 recorded that September 2020 would mark twenty years of PMM, with the anniversary issue hosting special features looking back at two decades of aftermarket insight. A trade title surviving twenty years in the independent aftermarket, and continuing strongly beyond it, has had to track a complete transformation of its readers' work: the spread of electronic diagnostics, the tightening of emissions rules, the rise of hybrid and electric vehicles and the arrival of driver-assistance systems have all changed what a technician must know, and PMM's planned features over the years read as a record of that change. The magazine's regular structure of news, technical clinics, product tests and business coverage has remained recognisably consistent, while the subjects inside it have moved steadily from mechanical to electronic and software-based work.

What a PMM Issue Contains

Hamerville summarises the editorial formula as a large array of technical articles covering the latest technologies, the practical skills and the servicing techniques the modern automotive technician requires. Each issue features industry news and talking points, new products and equipment, business advice, updates on law and legislation, real-life case studies and product tests. The magazine's published features lists show how that formula is scheduled across a year. Recurring strands include diagnostics and engine management, brakes and clutches, steering and suspension, oils, lubricants and additives, exhausts and emissions, tools and garage equipment, tyres, wheels and alignment, batteries and ignition, engines and turbos, air conditioning and thermal management, filters, and light commercial vehicles. Seasonal planning adds winter service and lighting coverage in the colder months, and the MOT test, the annual roadworthiness inspection every British garage business depends on, receives dedicated features more than once a year.

The Modern Workshop and New Technology

Alongside its established strands, PMM has added features that track where the trade is heading. A strand called The Modern Workshop was introduced in its 2022 planning, on the reasoning that as vehicles become more complex and the industry turns towards more environmentally friendly solutions, workshops must stay on top of what it takes to remain competitive and excel. Newer recurring subjects include hybrid and electric vehicles, which appear repeatedly across each year's features list, and ADAS, the advanced driver-assistance systems whose sensors and cameras garages must now calibrate after routine work. Regular features across the years have included news and views, special reports, technical clinics, product tests, tech tips, business and training coverage, what's new pages and competitions and giveaways, giving the magazine a workshop rhythm: fault-finding knowledge at the front, business sense at the back, and new kit throughout.

Editors and the PMM Team

The magazine's editorial leadership has changed as it has grown. Its 2018 features list named Alex Juggins as editor, with James Burman as editorial assistant and Daniel P. Cross as group online editor. By the publisher's 2022 media information, the group editor was Kieran Nee, with a digital manager supporting the online operation, and Nee remains the public face of the title: he edits the magazine, hosts its podcast and interviews industry figures for its news coverage. In a recent PMM interview on the MOT fee cap, for example, it was Nee who questioned the founder of a major independent testing group about the economics of testing. The masthead structure, with group-level editorial and advertising roles shared across Hamerville's titles and a dedicated PMM editorial contact address, reflects a specialist B2B publisher running the magazine as one title within a small motor-trade portfolio.

PMM Online and the Podcast

The print magazine is supplemented by the website pmmonline.co.uk, which gives readers access to further technical content, videos and product and news stories, and hosts an archive of PDF versions of the magazine. Since June 2022 the brand has also included the Professional Motor Mechanic Podcast, hosted by editor Kieran Nee and produced by Hamerville Media Group, which takes news and industry updates to garage owners, technicians and aftermarket professionals in audio form. By early 2026 the podcast had reached 38 monthly episodes. Its announced topics give a fair picture of the questions occupying the trade: supply chain shortages, the garage technician of the future, electrification, the Motor Vehicle Block Exemption Regulations, known as MVBER, and how to price a job correctly. Episodes mix sector experts with local garages to find out what is really happening on the ground, and have included a discussion with Matt Cleevely on how garages can profit from electric vehicles and a lighter edition on vehicle bulbs with a specialist from Ring-Osram.

MECHANEX, Awards and the Trade Calendar

PMM is closely tied to the motor trade's live events. Its features lists across the years include previews of MECHANEX, the trade shows for garage professionals held at venues including Manchester, Coventry and Sandown Park, and the magazine's own calendar includes the PMM Awards, scheduled in its December coverage, as well as top product awards during the summer months. Competitions in the magazine can be unusually hands-on: one September 2021 feature offered a reader the chance to become a raceday mechanic, and the winner, reader Ash Singh, spent a day at Brands Hatch helping the Richardson Racing team prepare a Porsche 911 GT3 for the final Porsche Carrera Cup race of the weekend, an experience the magazine then reported in depth. Such features underline PMM's position inside the trade's year rather than outside it, reporting on the shows, awards and experiences through which the aftermarket talks to itself.

Campaigning Coverage: The MOT Fee Cap

PMM's news reporting gives its readers a voice on the policies that affect them. Its coverage of the MOT fee cap is a good example: the magazine reported the industry's growing pressure on government to act on the maximum MOT fee, which had remained at £54.85 since 2010 without rising with inflation. PMM interviewed the founder of The Test Centre, a group of testing stations in south-east London and Kent carrying out more than 80,000 tests a year, who described the situation as a crisis point, argued that the fee would stand at around £85 had it risen with inflation, and reported support from the Institute of the Motor Industry and petitioning by the Independent Garage Association. By setting out the figures, the regulator's reasoning and the trade bodies' positions, the magazine performs the classic trade-press function: informing workshops about a campaign, and giving the campaign a platform in front of the technicians it concerns.

Why Professional Motor Mechanic Matters

In a media landscape where consumer motoring titles chase motorists, PMM serves the people who repair the nation's cars, and it reaches them with unusual efficiency by appearing where they already go for parts. Nearly 60,000 independent technicians reading a monthly trade title, eleven issues a year, gives advertisers and industry bodies a direct line to the workshop floor, and gives technicians a single source for the diagnostic knowledge, legislative updates and business advice their livelihoods increasingly require. The addition of a podcast, an online archive and event coverage has turned a print magazine founded more than two decades ago into a small multi-platform trade brand without changing its essential promise. Based in Watford, in England, and published by Hamerville Media Group, Professional Motor Mechanic remains the independent garage sector's own magazine. Its official website is pmmonline.co.uk.
