About Pump Industry
Pump Industry
Overview
Pump Industry is an Australian trade publication devoted entirely to pumps and pumping equipment, published in print and online for the people who specify, buy, operate and maintain pumps across Australian industry. It describes itself as Australia's only dedicated pump magazine, and it is produced by Prime Creative Media in cooperation with Pump Industry Australia (PIA), the national industry association for the pump sector. Its website, pumpindustry.com.au, publishes daily news alongside the quarterly print magazine, a weekly newsletter and the annual Pump Industry Capability Guide.
The publication serves a cross-industry readership. Pumps are used in almost every process sector, and Pump Industry follows them into water and wastewater utilities, mining, oil and gas, liquefied natural gas and coal seam gas, irrigation, building services, chemicals and plastics, food and beverage production and general manufacturing. Its mix of news, technical reference material, project reporting and product coverage is aimed at end users and specifiers as much as at the manufacturers and suppliers who make up the PIA's membership.
History
Pump Industry was founded by publisher Chris Bland, who had previously worked on titles serving the water, oil and gas, energy and infrastructure industries and noticed that, while pumps appeared everywhere in those sectors, there was no single publication through which the pump industry could communicate. Bland approached Pump Industry Australia with the concept, and in July 2012 he canvassed PIA members about what such a magazine should contain. The consistent answer was that it had to reach the end users and specifiers of pumps — reliability engineers, rotating equipment and hydraulic engineers, consultants, building managers and maintenance supervisors — rather than simply circulating among suppliers.
The magazine launched in 2012 with an audience of more than 2,600 from its first issue, according to Bland's fifth-anniversary account published in 2017, and was online from the start, with a website and newsletter alongside the print edition. In that same retrospective, Bland reported that print circulation had climbed to over 4,000 and that by 2017 the title reached at least 22,000 people each quarter across its print, digital and social channels — figures published by the publisher itself at the time. A regular "Pump Pioneer" interview in each edition profiled life members and long-serving figures of the Australian pump industry, and in 2014 the magazine published a supplement marking fifty years of the PIA. In 2015 it launched the Pump Industry Capability Guide, an annual print and online directory intended to help end users and specifiers find industry providers.
Pump Industry also uncovered its own predecessor. Research for the magazine established that an earlier Australian pump title, The Australian Pump Journal, had been published in the late 1960s by commercial editor Robert "Bob" Pullen and technical editor F. Muscroft, with a similar mix of news, technical material and industry promotion; surviving copies of the journal were shared with the magazine and featured in its pages.
The magazine was originally published by Monkey Media, a Melbourne B2B publisher and marketing agency founded around the title, for which Pump Industry was the first publication. On 2 April 2024 Prime Creative Media acquired Monkey Media, including all of its print, digital and marketing assets, and Pump Industry joined the Prime Creative Media stable alongside Monkey Media's other titles. Bland, by then Monkey Media's managing director, joined Prime Creative Media as part of the acquisition, together with a team of about twenty media professionals.
Content and Coverage
The website's coverage is organised into news, technical content and sector channels. News reporting covers open tenders and opportunities and contracts and tenders awarded, together with company and project announcements from across the pump supply chain. The technical strand covers standards and engineering practice, and a "Pump School" section — including an Ask an Expert feature — publishes primers on pump fundamentals, a deliberate response to readers who studied pumps years earlier and now work with them as one part of a broader plant role.
Sector coverage follows the industries in which pumps are critical equipment: water and wastewater, mining, energy efficiency, irrigation, LNG, coal seam gas, building services, chemicals and plastics, and related fields such as valves and reliability. Project reporting examines pumps in service on major installations — recent website coverage, in October 2026, included Unitywater's upgrade of wastewater pump stations across the Moreton Bay region as part of its multi-billion-dollar infrastructure program, and a case study of an electric diaphragm pump installation that cut operating costs at an Australian cardboard plant. Interviews with end users, industry leaders and the magazine's Pump Pioneer subjects sit alongside product news and thought-leadership contributions from engineers and suppliers.
The annual Capability Guide complements the magazine as a one-stop directory of industry providers, published in print and online. The magazine itself appears in print quarterly, with the website updated daily and a newsletter distributed weekly.
Audience and Reach
Pump Industry is written for the Australian pump community in the broadest sense: end users in utilities, mines, plants and buildings; the engineers and consultants who specify pumping equipment; and the manufacturers, distributors and service companies who supply it. The publisher built the original audience by researching individual workplaces — mines, oil and gas plants, power stations, councils, wastewater treatment plants, major buildings and irrigation stores — to identify the people responsible for pumps at each site.
The audience figures in the public record are the publisher's own. Bland's 2017 account reported a first-issue audience above 2,600, print circulation climbing past 4,000, and a quarterly reach of at least 22,000 people across print, digital and social channels at that time. No independently audited circulation is published for the title. Its professional social following gives a further indication of scale: the magazine's LinkedIn page, maintained from Melbourne, had more than 4,300 followers in October 2026.
Digital Presence
The publication's digital presence centres on pumpindustry.com.au, which carries the magazine's news, technical library, sector channels, Pump School material and the online Capability Guide, and distributes a weekly email newsletter. The site was publishing current industry news in October 2026, including utility project reporting dated that month. Pump Industry also maintains a LinkedIn presence for news updates and technical information, and the publisher's marketing services arm has historically produced digital campaigns, custom newsletters and websites for pump industry clients alongside the magazine itself.
Ownership and Organisation
Pump Industry is published by Prime Creative Media, one of Australia's largest independent B2B publishers, following its acquisition of the title's founding publisher, Monkey Media, on 2 April 2024. The magazine continues to be produced in cooperation with Pump Industry Australia, the industry association whose members it has covered since its first issue. Editorial operations are based in Melbourne, Victoria, where the publisher maintains its Collingwood office; managing editor Laura Harvey has been named in the magazine's own reporting in that role, and founder Chris Bland moved into the Prime Creative Media team as part of the 2024 acquisition.
Contact and Availability
Pump Industry is available online at pumpindustry.com.au, where current news, technical articles and the Capability Guide can be read and subscriptions to the print magazine and newsletter arranged. The magazine has published (03) 9988 4950 as the contact number for its Melbourne publishing office. The public business email field for this listing is intentionally left blank.
