About Q104 (CFRQ)

Q104 (CFRQ)

Q104 (CFRQ-FM) is Halifax's mainstream rock radio station — a Stingray Group outlet broadcasting on 104.3 MHz with 100,000 watts, branded "The Home of Rock 'n' Roll" in Atlantic Canada. Launched November 28, 1983, by Patterson Broadcasters with the slogan "The Rock of the Atlantic" and Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll" as its first song, it has been Halifax's rock station for more than four decades. Its audience calls itself the "Q-Nation," and since January 2021 it has anchored Stingray's "Q Network" of Atlantic rock stations, with its morning show simulcast across the region.

Overview

CFRQ-FM is a commercial FM station licensed to Halifax, Nova Scotia, owned by Stingray Group through Stingray Radio. It broadcasts on 104.3 MHz with 100,000 watts (Class C), with studios on Kempt Road in Halifax and a transmitter on Washmill Lake Drive in Clayton Park.

The station's format is mainstream rock, affiliated with HFX Wanderers FC (Canadian Premier League soccer). Its broadcast area covers the Halifax Regional Municipality. Sister stations include CKUL-FM. The call sign stands for "C-FReQuency" (alternatively "C-Sea-Freak").

History

CFRQ was launched on November 28, 1983, by President Arnie Patterson of Patterson Broadcasters (also operators of CFDR), Senior Vice-President Bill Patterson, and Vice-President/Chief Engineer Jack Hutchison. The original slogan was "The Rock of the Atlantic," and the first song played was Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll."

In 1993, CFRQ established a charitable fund supporting local children and families in need of financial aid due to medical conditions. The station became part of Newcap Radio and then Stingray Group (which acquired Newcap in 2018).

In January 2021, Stingray networked its rock stations in Atlantic Canada out of CFRQ/Halifax, with all of them adopting the "Q" branding and airing CFRQ's morning show, in addition to the existing networked evening show "Rock of the Atlantic." In June 2023, Stingray's stations joined Bell Media's iHeartRadio Canada service.

The Mighty Q has been rock's Atlantic home since 1983. On February 10, 1983, Patterson Broadcasters Ltd. was awarded a licence for a new FM station at Halifax-Dartmouth, with a progressive rock format on 104.3 MHz at 100,000 watts (a competing application by Halder Media was denied; an earlier 1981 application by Dartmouth Broadcasting had also been denied). Patterson — owned by C.A. Patterson, owner of CFDR-AM Dartmouth — had proposed transmitting from the CBC tower used by CBH-FM; on November 23 the station was granted a power decrease from 100,000 to 50,000 watts because of antenna power-handling limitations, as the original plan to share the CBC FM antenna was no longer feasible. CFRQ-FM signed on November 28, 1983, launched by president Arnie Patterson, senior vice-president Bill Patterson, and vice-president/chief engineer Jack Hutchison. The original slogan was "The Rock of the Atlantic" — still used for the evening program — and the first song played was Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll." The calls can be read as C-FReQuency or C(Sea)-Freak.

In 1986, Newfoundland Capital Corporation (NewCap) — which had only recently purchased the Halifax Daily News — agreed to buy CFDR and CFRQ-FM from Patterson Broadcasters, and in 2018 the station passed to the Stingray Group. The current lineup includes BJ and The Q Morning Crew (BJ Wilson, Bobby Mac, and Gillian Foote), mid-days with Anna Zee (a four-time National Music Director of the Year winner in the medium market), and afternoon drive with Tom Bedell — also host of the Q104 Early Dismissal, the 5 O'Clock Traffic Jam, and the local music program Route 104. In 1993 CFRQ established a charitable fund supporting local children and families facing financial hardship from medical conditions — a community role the station has kept for over three decades.

In January 2021, CFRQ's evening program The Rock of the Atlantic (hosted by JC Douglas/Neil Spence) began networking to sister stations CJMO-FM Moncton, CHNI-FM Saint John, and CKEZ-FM New Glasgow; the three stations adopted similar Q branding as the "Q Network" and began simulcasting CFRQ's morning show — making Q104 the hub of a regional rock network across the Maritimes. The station also carries HFX Wanderers FC as a broadcast affiliate.

Programming

The station's lineup includes "BJ and The Q Morning Crew" (BJ Wilson, Bobby Mac, and Gillian Foote), Anna Zee in middays — a four-time National Music Director of the Year (medium market) winner — Tom Bedell on afternoon drive (also hosting "The Q104 Early Dismissal," the "5 O'Clock Traffic Jam," and the award-winning local music program "Route 104"), and "The Rock of the Atlantic" with Neil Spence in evenings, networked to sister stations CJMO-FM Moncton, CHNI-FM Saint John, and CKEZ-FM New Glasgow.

Coverage and Audience

CFRQ's 100,000-watt signal covers the Halifax Regional Municipality, with the Q Network extending its morning show across Atlantic Canada. The station targets rock fans, competing with Acadia Broadcasting's rock outlets, Bell Media's stations, and streaming services.

The original 1983 lineup reads like a time capsule of '80s rock radio: the "Morning Zoo" with Brother Jake Edwards, Hal Harbour (Doug Barron), and "Billy-Bob" (Bill Phillips); mid-days with "The Legend" Bob Powers; afternoon drive with Andy K.; a six-o'clock rock report with "Rockin'" Ray Plourde; the Midnight Metal Show; and weekend afternoons with Jessica Taylor, who also created and voiced Bambi Fawn for the morning show's "Between the Sheets" feature. Other original voices included Jim Armstrong (ex-CFQM-FM Moncton, later CJMO), Brenda Oland ("Ms. Information"), Doug Caldwell, Andrew Gillis ("Les Ismore"), and Andrew Boyle on sports. The current lineup carries that continuity: Tom Bedell — who started in the late '80s at Saint John's legendary CFBC and has been driving metro Halifax home since 1998, with earlier stints in Woodstock and at Annapolis Valley Radio in Kentville — anchors afternoons alongside BJ and The Q Morning Crew (BJ Wilson, Bobby Mac, Gillian Foote) and four-time national Music Director of the Year Anna Zee at mid-days.

Q104's community role has been literal as well as musical: the station sponsored the 2009 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships in neighbouring Dartmouth, the 2011 Canada Winter Games, the 2015 Ford World Men's Curling Championship, and teams including the QMJHL's Halifax Mooseheads and the NBL's Halifax Hurricanes. When Halifax Broadcasting's Rock 105 flipped to soft AC as The Jewel 105 in January 2019, Q104 was left as the only one of Halifax's ten commercial stations playing AC/DC, Pink Floyd, and Guns N' Roses — "the Home of Rock n' Roll" became a literal description of its market position.

Ownership

CFRQ-FM is owned and operated by Stingray Group, Canada's largest independent radio broadcaster. Stingray acquired the station in 2018 as part of its purchase of Newcap Radio. Earlier owners included Patterson Broadcasters (1983–1990s) and Newcap (1990s–2018).

The station's digital home is q104.ca, with studios at 3770 Kempt Road, Suite 200, Halifax, and published lines at 902-453-4004 and 902-453-3777 (SMS 902-451-1043). The Q-Nation follows the station on social channels under @Q104Halifax, and the station streams through Stingray's platforms and radio apps.

Digital Presence

Q104 streams live through Stingray's digital platforms and iHeartRadio Canada, and maintains active social media accounts promoting its hosts, concerts, and the Q-Nation community. The station is associated with the q104.ca web portal; Wikipedia lists q104.ca as the station's official website.

The station's history — from the 1983 Patterson launch to the Q Network era — is documented by the Canadian Communications Foundation's broadcasting-history.ca project and in CRTC licensing records.
