Quanzhou Evening News (Chinese: 泉州晚报; pinyin: Quanzhou Wanbao) is a Chinese-language evening newspaper published in Quanzhou, Fujian Province, on China's southeast coast. It is the official newspaper of Quanzhou — in the words of its own publisher's description, it serves the city's government and is also the voice of local citizens and public opinion — and it operates as the largest print media company in Quanzhou. Published within the Quanzhou Evening News press group system, the paper covers the government, private economy and society of a city famous as a starting point of the Maritime Silk Road, and its stated mission is to enrich the lives of residents and to revitalise cultural development.
Quanzhou Evening News holds a dual position in its city's media landscape. As an evening newspaper it follows the format, familiar across China, of a paper published for afternoon and evening reading with a strong emphasis on city life, society and services; as Quanzhou's official newspaper it also carries the responsibilities of a party and government title, reporting the work of the municipal authorities. A 2011 press release issued when the paper invested in new printing capacity described Quanzhou Evening News as the largest print media company in Quanzhou and stated its position plainly: as the official newspaper, it serves the city's government and is also the voice of the local citizens and public opinion.
That combination — official standing plus a mass city readership — defines the paper's editorial remit. Its pages cover municipal government and policy, the economy of one of China's most entrepreneurial prefecture-level cities, social news, culture and consumer services for Quanzhou residents. The publisher's stated mission, to enrich the lives of residents and to revitalise cultural development, reflects the evening-paper tradition of combining authoritative news with material closely tied to readers' daily lives.
The city Quanzhou Evening News serves is one of China's oldest port cities. Quanzhou rose during the Song and Yuan dynasties into one of the largest ports in the world — Marco Polo described it among the greatest ports he knew — and it is celebrated as a starting point of the Maritime Silk Road, with a multicultural heritage of Buddhism, Islam, Taoism and other faiths that later won international recognition. That heritage is a standing subject for the city's official newspaper: historic districts, temples and mosques, traditional crafts and the conservation of the old city all fall within its cultural reporting, alongside the ceremonies and announcements of municipal government.
Quanzhou is also a centre of Minnan (southern Fujian) culture, the culture carried by Hokkien-speaking emigrants to Taiwan and Southeast Asia. Large numbers of overseas Chinese trace their ancestry to Quanzhou, and the paper's coverage of hometown affairs, clan and ancestral-hall culture, and exchanges with overseas Quanzhou communities speaks to readers well beyond the city's administrative borders.
Modern Quanzhou is known across China for its private economy. After reform and opening up began in 1978, the city and its counties — Jinjiang, Shishi, Nan'an and Hui'an among them — built nationally known manufacturing clusters in footwear and sportswear, textiles and garments, stone and building materials, and food processing, producing brands that became household names in China. Quanzhou Evening News covers this economy from inside its home city: the fortunes of local manufacturers and exporters, the city's ports and trade, urban development as the prefecture urbanised, and the policies of a municipal government whose work is closely tied to private enterprise. For local business readers, the official newspaper is a primary channel for policy announcements affecting trade, land, labour and industry.
The clearest documented measure of the paper's industrial scale is its investment in printing capacity. On 3 May 2011, Goss International announced that Quanzhou Evening News would install a new single-width, one-around Goss Magnum 4 press with a capacity of up to 70,000 newspaper copies per hour. The press system comprised 16 printing units, one 2:3:3 jaw folder and five reelstands, with installation scheduled to start in the second half of 2011. The stated aims were to expand capacity and improve efficiency.
It was the publisher's first investment in a Goss press. The paper's vice president, Wu Yuhuan, explained the choice at the signing: the Magnum was selected not only for its value, high performance and features, but also for the manufacturer's stability and credibility, with Goss's affiliation with Shanghai Electric and its established operation in China — including its Goss Graphic Systems China facility in Shanghai — giving the publisher confidence in local support. For Goss, its vice president of newspaper press sales in Asia, Peter Kirwan, presented the order as evidence of emerging demand in China for single-width presses combining versatility with speeds approaching those of larger two-around machines.
A press rated at 70,000 copies an hour is infrastructure for a mass-circulation city daily, and the 2011 investment came at a moment when China's metropolitan and evening newspapers were still expanding print capacity to serve large urban readerships. The configuration chosen — sixteen printing units with a jaw folder and five reelstands — allowed the publisher to print large page counts and multiple products, the kind of flexibility an evening newspaper group needs when a single plant serves a flagship title and related publications. The investment also underlined the paper's self-description as Quanzhou's largest print media company: printing was not outsourced but owned and expanded in-house.
Within Fujian, Quanzhou Evening News is the leading newspaper of the province's most populous prefecture-level city, published in a media system that also includes the provincial party newspaper in Fuzhou and the party newspapers of Xiamen and other Fujian cities. Its evening format distinguishes it from the morning party dailies that dominate many Chinese prefectures: it carries official authority while competing for general readers on city news, society and culture. Directories of Chinese newspapers list Quanzhou Wanbao among Fujian's principal titles, and industry reporting continues to treat the publisher as a significant regional media company — it was named, for example, among the Chinese newspaper organisations that had launched systematic media-transformation programmes by 2025.
Like other Chinese city newspapers, Quanzhou Evening News has had to adapt to a readership that increasingly takes its news from phones rather than printed pages. The publisher's inclusion among the media groups pursuing systematic transformation of mainstream media reflects that shift: integrating newspaper, digital and converged-media operations while retaining the official newspaper's authority. The paper's print identity — the evening edition delivered across Quanzhou — remains its foundation, but its reporting now also moves through the digital channels operated by its press group.
The mission stated by the publisher — to enrich residents' lives and revitalise cultural development — gives cultural coverage an explicit place in the paper's work. Quanzhou's stock of heritage is unusually deep for a prefecture-level city: the old city streets around Xi Street, religious architecture from its centuries as an international port, Nanyin music, puppet theatre and other Minnan arts, and the living culture of its overseas-Chinese hometowns. An official newspaper with a cultural mission is both reporter and promoter of that inheritance, covering conservation decisions by the municipal government and the festivals, performances and exhibitions that keep the traditions in public view.
Quanzhou Evening News is a Chinese-language evening newspaper based in Quanzhou, Fujian. It is the city's official newspaper and its largest print media company, published within the Quanzhou Evening News press group system. It covers Quanzhou's municipal government, private manufacturing economy, Maritime Silk Road heritage and Minnan culture. In May 2011 it ordered a Goss Magnum 4 press rated at up to 70,000 copies per hour — 16 printing units, a 2:3:3 jaw folder and five reelstands — its first Goss investment, announced by vice president Wu Yuhuan as a step to expand capacity and improve efficiency.
