About Quest

Quest is a British free-to-air television channel owned by Warner Bros. Discovery, broadcasting factual, lifestyle and entertainment programming to audiences across the United Kingdom and Ireland. Launched on 30 September 2009, it was the first channel launched in Britain by Discovery Networks without using the Discovery name, conceived as a free-to-air showcase for programming from across the company's channel portfolio. Broadcasting from Freeview channel 12, it has grown into one of the biggest free-to-air television channels for men in Britain, built around motoring, salvage, engineering and adventure series.

The channel's best-known programme is Salvage Hunters, the antiques series fronted by Drew Pritchard that has run for twenty series and become one of the most successful British factual formats of its era. Alongside it, series such as Wheeler Dealers, How Do They Do It?, Chasing Classic Cars and Auction Hunters have made Quest a destination for viewers who enjoy practical, hands-on factual entertainment. Its sister channel Quest Red, launched in 2017, extends the brand to a broader audience with lifestyle and reality programming.

A delayed launch

Discovery announced in October 2008 that it would launch a channel on Freeview in early 2009, but without using the Discovery name, a deliberate decision to create a distinct free-to-air brand. A placeholder appeared on Freeview channel 47 in January 2009, and the channel was scheduled to launch on 14 May 2009. On the planned launch morning, after broadcasting a promotional loop, the channel reverted at 10am to a coming soon message, and Discovery announced that the launch had been postponed for commercial reasons, apologising to viewers who had been looking forward to it.

In August 2009 Discovery Networks announced a new launch date of 30 September 2009, with the channel moving to Freeview channel 38. Quest duly launched on that date, becoming the first non-Discovery-branded channel the company had launched in the UK. It arrived on Sky on 1 October 2009 after acquiring an electronic programme guide slot from Information TV 2, and on Virgin Media on 25 March 2010. The timeshift service Quest +1 launched on Sky on 2 November 2009, replacing DMAX +1.5.

Ownership

Quest is operated by Warner Bros. Discovery, formed by the 2022 merger of Discovery, Inc. and WarnerMedia. Within the company's British portfolio, Quest sits alongside the pay TV flagship Discovery Channel and factual sisters including Animal Planet, Discovery Science, Discovery Turbo, Discovery History and Investigation Discovery, as well as the free-to-air channels DMAX and Quest Red and the entertainment brands TLC, Food Network and Really. The channel's programming is drawn largely from this portfolio, giving free-to-air viewers access to series that premiered on the company's pay channels.

The channel's free-to-air showcase model was innovative at launch: rather than creating entirely original programming, Quest repackaged the best of Discovery's pay TV output for a free audience, introducing the company's franchises to viewers who did not subscribe to pay television. Over time the channel has added its own commissions and premieres, but the showcase principle remains at the heart of its schedule.

Freeview channel 12

Quest moved to Freeview channel 12, one of the most prominent positions on the platform, after its owner Discovery, Inc. acquired the Good Food, Home and Really channels from the UKTV network as part of a deal with BBC Studios. The channel 12 slot had previously been occupied by Dave, and its acquisition gave Quest exceptional visibility on the free-to-air guide, placing it alongside the biggest entertainment channels. The move reflected Discovery's growing commitment to free-to-air television in Britain and Quest's importance within that strategy.

The channel subsequently moved multiplexes on Freeview, and in November 2022 Quest Red +1 closed on the platform as part of a reshuffle of Discovery's free-to-air capacity. Quest itself has remained a mainstay of the Freeview line-up, its channel 12 position making it one of the first factual channels viewers encounter when browsing the guide.

Salvage Hunters

Quest's defining programme is Salvage Hunters, the modern-day treasure hunting series fronted by antique expert Drew Pritchard. Commissioned on 25 October 2011 by Discovery Networks International for Quest from Cineflix Productions UK, the series follows Pritchard as he travels Britain's back roads searching for derelict gems and forgotten remnants, from country house clearances to trade markets, buying items to restore and resell from his large showroom in North Wales. The series is narrated by Ralph Ineson and has become one of the longest-running British factual series, reaching its twentieth series in 2025.

The programme's production history reflects its success: when later series were commissioned, the executives behind the show led a management buyout of Cineflix's British production arm, forming the independent producer Curve Media, which took over production of the series. Salvage Hunters has spawned numerous spin-offs, including Salvage Hunters: The Restorers, Salvage Hunters: Classic Cars, Salvage Hunters: Design Classics, Salvage Hunters: Best Buys and Salvage Hunters: Georgian House Restoration, creating a franchise that fills significant hours of the Quest schedule.

Key programmes

Beyond Salvage Hunters, Quest's schedule is built around practical factual entertainment. Wheeler Dealers, the car restoration series with Mike Brewer, has been a cornerstone of the channel, alongside How Do They Do It?, which explains the engineering behind everyday objects and structures. Chasing Classic Cars follows the restoration and auction of vintage automobiles, while the American auction series Auction Hunters, the garage series Misfit Garage and Vegas Rat Rods, and the restoration show FantomWorks cater to the channel's large motoring audience.

The channel has also carried more specialist factual programming, including Spanish Civil War with Michael Portillo, and a range of films and sports coverage. Its schedule is designed to appeal to a predominantly male audience interested in how things work, how things are made and how things are restored, a proposition that has made it one of the most successful free-to-air channels for men.

Quest Red

On 15 March 2017 Discovery launched Quest Red, a sister channel positioned as the home of irresistibly real television. Aimed at a broader and more female-skewing audience than the main channel, Quest Red's schedule has included Say Yes to the Dress, the bridal reality series; Long Lost Family US, the American version of the reunion series; and Paranormal Lockdown with Nick Groff. The channel extended the Quest brand beyond its male-skewing factual heartland and gave Discovery a second free-to-air outlet for its lifestyle and reality programming.

Quest and Quest Red launched together on Freesat in 2017, in a deal that the platform's managing director described as underlining its commitment to offering the most-loved television channels, bringing the two services to an additional two million households. The Freesat launch was presented as an important step in Discovery's goal of reaching viewers on every screen.

Timeshift, HD and streaming

Quest operates a one-hour timeshift service, Quest +1, available on Sky and other platforms. Quest Red also operated a timeshift service until its closure on Freeview in November 2022. Quest HD has been available on the Swiss IPTV platform Swisscom TV since November 2019, though the channel's British distribution remains standard definition on terrestrial and satellite free-to-air platforms.

The channel's programmes are available to stream on discovery+, Warner Bros. Discovery's streaming service, which offers live streaming of the company's channels and an extensive on-demand library. Selected series are also available through the company's TV Everywhere apps, allowing viewers to watch Quest content on mobile, tablet and connected TV devices.

Audience and position

Quest has grown steadily since its 2009 launch to become one of the biggest free-to-air television channels for men in Britain, a remarkable achievement for a channel that began life as a showcase for another company's pay TV output. Its success reflects the strength of its programming proposition: practical, engaging factual entertainment with charismatic presenters and satisfying resolutions, from the restoration of a classic car to the discovery of a valuable antique.

Within Warner Bros. Discovery's British portfolio, Quest forms a free-to-air pair with DMAX, the male-skewing factual entertainment channel, giving the company comprehensive coverage of the free television market. Together with the pay TV Discovery channels and the discovery+ streaming service, the free-to-air channels ensure that Discovery's factual entertainment reaches viewers however they choose to watch.

Quest today

More than fifteen years after its postponed debut, Quest is an established and successful part of the British television landscape. Its channel 12 position on Freeview gives it prominence few factual channels can match, and its flagship series continue to draw loyal audiences. The channel's journey from a delayed launch to one of Britain's most popular free-to-air factual services illustrates the value of patience and a clear programming proposition in a crowded market.

As viewing habits continue to evolve, Quest's combination of linear broadcast, timeshift, streaming and on-demand availability positions it well for the future. Its audience knows what the channel stands for: real people, real skills and real stories, from salvage yards to restoration workshops, and that clarity of purpose remains its greatest strength.
