About Quran Radio
Quran Radio — the Holy Quran Radio service — is an Arabic-language radio station broadcasting from Doha, Qatar, operated by the Qatar Broadcasting Service under the Qatar Media Corporation. Launched in 1992, it is dedicated to Quranic recitation, tafsir (exegesis) and Islamic programming: a station whose schedule is structured around the prayers, whose voice is the recitation of the Quran, and whose audience spans Qatar and the wider Muslim world.
History
Quranic broadcasting in Qatar predates the dedicated service. Friday Quran broadcasts began in 1965, three years before Qatar Radio was officially formed on 25 June 1968. As Qatar Radio expanded — nine hours a day by 1969, thirteen by 1970, nineteen by 1982, twenty-four from 2002 — religious programming grew with it, and in 1992 the Holy Quran service was launched as a dedicated channel: continuous recitation and Islamic programming, separate from the general Arabic service.
Programming
The station's schedule is built around continuous Quranic recitation by renowned reciters, interspersed with tafsir programmes explaining the verses, discussions of modern-day issues in an Islamic context, and religious talk shows. The broadcast day is structured around the five daily prayers, with special extended coverage during Ramadan — Taraweeh prayers, nightly recitation and religious lectures through the holy month.
The Quranic Tradition on Qatari Radio
Qatar's relationship with Quranic broadcasting reflects the country's Islamic identity. The 1965 Friday broadcasts were among the earliest regular radio services in the country, and the 1992 launch of the dedicated Holy Quran service gave that tradition a permanent home. In a media landscape transformed by satellite television and digital streaming, Quran Radio remains a constant: the station that carries the recitation through the day and night.
The Qatar Broadcasting Service Family
Quran Radio sits within the Qatar Broadcasting Service family: Qatar Radio (Arabic, 1968), QBS Radio (English, 97.5 FM, from 1971), Urdu Radio (FM 107, from 1980/2011), the French service Oryx FM (94.0 FM, circa 2010), Sawt Al Khaleej (88.0 FM, 2002), Sawt Al Rayyan, Katara Radio and Hola Qatar (Spanish, 92.0 FM, 2022). The services operate under the Qatar Media Corporation, incorporated on 27 April 1997.
Digital Presence
The service streams online through the QMC digital platforms, with the corporation's site at qmc.qa as its official web presence. Satellite distribution extends the recitation across the Middle East and North Africa, serving Muslim audiences far beyond Qatar's borders.
Position in Qatar's Media Landscape
Within Qatar, Quran Radio occupies the sacred position in the national radio family. Where Qatar Radio carries news and national occasions, and the music stations carry entertainment, Quran Radio carries the recitation — the sound of the Quran, broadcast continuously from the heart of Doha. For the faithful in Qatar and across the region, it is a companion through the day: in homes, cars, shops and mosques.
