About QVC Beauty

Overview

QVC Beauty is a British digital television shopping channel devoted entirely to beauty products, broadcasting cosmetics, skincare, fragrance, haircare and beauty tools around the clock. A sister channel to the main QVC shopping channel, it launched on 26 October 2010 and is available on Sky, Freesat and online, having previously also been carried on Freeview. The channel is owned by the QVC Group, formerly known as Qurate Retail Group, the American home-shopping giant whose British operation began in 1993 as the United Kingdom's first full-time home shopping channel.

QVC Beauty's schedule combines live beauty programming with compiled one-hour programmes assembled from the most recent live presentations, enhanced with original content from industry experts and brand personalities. Its proposition is that of a dedicated beauty destination: viewers can watch demonstrations of prestige and salon brands, receive advice from beauty experts, and purchase products by telephone, online or through interactive television.

The Beauty Channel origins

QVC Beauty began life in 2008 as a red-button interactive stream called the Beauty Channel, available only through QVC Active, the company's interactive television service on the Sky platform. The stream offered four hours of product demonstrations selected from merchandise first aired on the main QVC channel, and it was promoted as the United Kingdom's first channel devoted entirely to beauty. The success of the stream, built on the popularity of beauty programming within QVC's main schedule, convinced the company that a full standalone channel was commercially viable.

To secure a broadcast slot for the new channel, QVC acquired the Sky electronic programme guide slot belonging to Blueberry TV on 23 July 2010, transferring it to QVC and renaming it Bilberry TV, with QVC's existing Ofcom broadcast licence renamed accordingly. On 26 October 2010, QVC Beauty launched in its place, broadcasting twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, with a four-hour programme loop showcasing brands such as Liz Earle, Decleor and Elemis, alongside themed shows such as In the Salon with Alison.

Launch and early growth

At launch, QVC described QVC Beauty as the first television channel in the United Kingdom dedicated to beauty programming. The channel's launch was underpinned by new broadcast technology developed with partners including Ensequence, PubliTronic and Isilon: a planning, asset management and transmission system that automatically ensured only videos featuring in-stock products were broadcast, with out-of-stock items removed from programming in real time, and interactive software that allowed viewers to navigate between video streams and purchase products using their Sky remote control.

The commercial logic of the launch was clear from the figures QVC published at the time: the company's beauty sales had grown by seventeen per cent in the first half of 2010 compared with the previous year, and Judy Deuchar, QVC UK's director of merchandising, described the company as already the destination for customers seeking premium beauty products. QVC Beauty, she said, would give vendors a dedicated channel through which to reach existing customers and new audiences with the inside track on their brands.

Freeview years

On 4 May 2011, QVC Beauty launched on Freeview channel 48, extending its reach to free-to-air terrestrial viewers, and on 26 March 2012 it moved to Freeview channel 35. The channel broadcast from 4.00am to 2.00am daily, with a high-definition simulcast, QVC Beauty HD, broadcasting on Freeview channel 112 from 2.00am to 4.00am daily. The Freeview carriage significantly expanded the channel's audience beyond Sky and cable homes.

The channel's Freeview presence came to an end on 21 June 2023, when QVC Beauty was replaced on the platform by QVC2, following the earlier loss of its high-definition service with the closure of the COM7 multiplex. The channel continues to broadcast on Sky and Freesat and through online streaming, where its audience can watch live and shop through the QVC UK website.

Programming and brands

QVC Beauty's programming is built around one-hour shows drawn from QVC's extensive range of salon and prestige skincare, cosmetics and haircare brands. These programmes are compiled from video clips of the most recent live presentations, enhanced with original content from industry experts and brand founders, giving viewers detailed demonstrations of how products are used alongside the opportunity to buy. The channel's schedule features regular appearances from well-known beauty brands, including long-standing QVC favourites in skincare, cosmetics and fragrance.

The channel's presenters and guest experts follow the QVC house style of demonstrative, informative selling, in which products are shown in use and their benefits explained at length. This approach, combined with the channel's beauty-only focus, is designed to create a viewing experience closer to a beauty counter consultation than to conventional teleshopping, and it has helped QVC build a loyal audience of beauty shoppers.

The wider QVC UK operation

QVC Beauty sits within a portfolio of British QVC channels that also includes the main QVC channel, QVC Style and QVC Extra, all broadcasting from the company's British operation. QVC UK launched in October 1993 as the country's first full-time home shopping channel, originally twenty per cent owned by Sky before becoming a wholly owned subsidiary of the American QVC business in 2004. The company was founded in the United States in 1986 by Joseph Segel and has grown into a multinational home-shopping corporation.

The British channels broadcast from QVC's studios and headquarters at Chiswick Park in West London, a 126,000-square-foot broadcast facility that the company has occupied under a long lease. In 2024, QVC signed an extended satellite carriage deal with the operator SES that keeps its channels, including the standard-definition services QVC Beauty and QVC Extra, on the Astra 2 satellite system that carries Sky and Freesat until 2029, securing the channels' satellite distribution toward the end of the decade.

How to watch and shop

QVC Beauty is available on Sky channel 663 and Freesat channel 801, and it streams live through the QVC UK website at qvcuk.com, where viewers can also browse the full product range and place orders. The channel's interactive heritage lives on in its digital services: customers can shop online, through the QVC app and by telephone, with the website carrying detailed product information, customer reviews and video demonstrations that complement the broadcast output.

The channel's availability on satellite means it reaches Sky and Freesat households across the United Kingdom and Ireland, while its online stream extends its audience to viewers watching on computers, tablets and smart televisions. Its broadcast hours on satellite run around the clock, with the schedule mixing dedicated beauty hours with compiled highlights.

QVC in the streaming age

Like all linear broadcasters, QVC has had to adapt to the rise of streaming and social commerce. The British arm of the company has invested in a presence on TikTok Shop, building new studios and a dedicated team for live-streamed shopping shows, and its chief executive has described the platform as a way of reaching new customers within QVC's core demographic of women aged thirty-five and above. The company stresses, however, that its television channels remain a very important part of the business, particularly for loyal customers.

In April 2026, QVC's American parent company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States as part of a plan to reduce more than five billion dollars of long-term debt, with the aim of exiting the process within around ninety days. The company's British management has stated that international markets, including the United Kingdom, are not part of the proceedings, and that the restructuring is intended to put the global business in a stronger financial position.

A dedicated beauty destination

More than a decade and a half after its launch, QVC Beauty remains the United Kingdom's only full-time television channel dedicated to beauty shopping. Its combination of expert-led demonstrations, prestige brands and interactive purchasing has given it a durable niche in a television landscape where single-genre shopping channels have faced increasing competition from online retail. For viewers who enjoy watching beauty products demonstrated in depth before buying, the channel offers an experience that high-street counters and standard online stores cannot replicate.

The channel's journey from a four-hour red-button stream to a round-the-clock presence on Sky and Freesat charts the growth of beauty as a television category in its own right. Whether watched for the demonstrations, the expert advice or the shopping itself, QVC Beauty continues to serve Britain's beauty enthusiasts every day.
