About Radio Horeb

Radio Horeb

Radio Horeb is a Catholic private radio station broadcasting from Balderschwang in the Allgäu region of Bavaria, with studios also in Munich and an administrative centre in Immenstadt. Named after the biblical Mount Horeb on the Sinai Peninsula, it has aired a 24-hour Catholic programme since 8 December 1996, distributed via DAB+, satellite, FM in the Munich area and the internet. As a member of the World Family of Radio Maria, the station is financed exclusively by listener donations and carries no advertising, making it one of Germany's most distinctive religious broadcasters.

Overview

Radio Horeb's programme is built on five pillars: liturgy, Christian spirituality, life coaching, music and news. The schedule follows the rhythm of Catholic devotional life: Holy Mass is broadcast live every day from various Catholic churches across Germany, and the Liturgy of the Hours — Lauds, Sext, the Angelus, Vespers and Compline — structures the day, alongside the Rosary prayed at 6 a.m., 7 p.m. and midnight. A radio academy produced by Vatican Radio is carried daily at 6 p.m. The station's blue logo depicts two mountains symbolising Mount Horeb, which at the same time form the letter "M" for the Virgin Mary. The programme director is Father Richard Kocher, who is also the parish priest of St. Anton in Balderschwang. The station's stated mission, rooted in the Second Vatican Council's decree on social communication Inter mirifica, is to win people for Christ and to help them align their lives with the Gospel.

History

The station's origins lie with the "Internationale Christliche Rundfunkgemeinschaft" (ICR e.V.), founded by Siegfried Dobretsberger, a culture editor at Austria's ORF. In the 1980s the association broadcast as "Radio Neues Europa" on local FM frequencies in southern Germany — in Munich the programme was initially heard on Sundays on 89.0 MHz. In 1995 Father Richard Kocher was elected chairman of the ICR; through his work as parish priest of St. Anton in Balderschwang, the radio activities increasingly shifted to the Oberallgäu, where the administrative centre was later established in Immenstadt.

On the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, 8 December 1996, the first Catholic 24-hour radio programme under the name Radio Horeb went on air via the Astra satellite. The model was Radio Maria Italy, which had become one of Italy's most-listened-to stations within a short time. When the World Family of Radio Maria was founded in 1998, Radio Horeb was a member from the start, joining an international network of Christian stations. In Munich, FM broadcasting continued under the name Radio Neues Europa until it was renamed Radio Horeb Munich in 2000.

The early years were not without controversy: at the start of operations there was a complaint about a racist remark by a priest in an adopted programme, from which the station distanced itself. According to the supervisory authority, the station has broadcast for years without complaints (as of December 2021). Terrestrial expansion followed: the programme was carried via DVB-T in Leipzig from November 2007 (in regular operation from May 2010), with further locations planned in Dresden, Chemnitz and Zwickau; DVB-T operations in Berlin, started in September 2005, were shut down in January 2014, and with the changeover to DVB-T2 at the end of March 2017 the broadcaster abandoned that transmission path entirely. On 18 August 2008 the groundbreaking ceremony took place in Balderschwang for a new studio to replace the previous facility at Almhof Lässer — a building with a 60-square-metre chapel integrated into it, reflecting the station's identity. In December 2021 the station celebrated its 25th anniversary; in an interview, Father Kocher estimated the weekly reach at around 350,000 people and rising, and pointed to "Radio Horeb – Team Deutschland", some 510 volunteers actively helping to spread the station, as a unique listener family in the German-speaking world.

Programming

The programme is deliberately structured around Catholic devotional life rather than conventional radio dayparts. Each day brings a live Holy Mass from a different church, the full cycle of the Liturgy of the Hours, and three daily Rosary prayers. Between these fixed points, the schedule offers catechesis, spiritual talks, programmes on faith and life questions, Christian music and news. The Vatican Radio academy slot at 6 p.m. connects the station to the universal Church. There is no advertising whatsoever; the entire operation is funded by donations from listeners, which gives the programming complete independence from commercial pressures. The tone is devotional and community-oriented, addressing listeners as a "Hörerfamilie" (listener family) rather than an audience commodity.

Coverage & Audience

Radio Horeb is receivable nationwide via DAB+ digital radio, Europe-wide via satellite, on FM in the Munich area and in Balderschwang itself, and worldwide through internet radio, social media and podcasts. A media library on the station's website allows listeners to retrieve programmes after broadcast. In the 2021 anniversary interview, programme director Kocher estimated that the station reaches around 350,000 people in an average week, with a rising trend — a remarkable figure for a donation-funded religious station. The 510 active members of "Radio Horeb – Team Deutschland" promote the station locally, a volunteer structure the director described as probably unique in the German-speaking world.

Ownership

Radio Horeb is operated by the Internationale Christliche Rundfunkgemeinschaft (ICR e.V.), the association founded by Dobretsberger and led since 1995 by Father Richard Kocher. As a member of the World Family of Radio Maria, founded in 1998, the station belongs to an international network of Catholic radio stations modelled on Italy's Radio Maria. Financing comes exclusively from listener donations; the station carries no advertising and is not affiliated with any commercial media group. The main studios are in Balderschwang — where the station's identity is inseparable from the mountain village and its parish — with additional studios in Munich and administration in Immenstadt im Allgäu.

Digital Presence

Digital distribution has been central to Radio Horeb's growth: the station's leadership credits digital radio with making it possible for the programme to be heard easily everywhere. Beyond DAB+ and satellite, the station is distributed as internet radio, through social media channels and in podcast form, and its website hosts a media library for catch-up listening. The online presence serves the listener family with programme schedules, spiritual resources and donation facilities. For a station whose mission is evangelisation through modern media, the digital platforms are not an add-on but the primary means by which a small Allgäu village reaches hundreds of thousands of listeners across the German-speaking world.

Named After the Biblical Mountain

radio horeb is named after the biblical Mount Horeb on the Sinai Peninsula — and the two mountains in the lower part of the station's blue logo symbolise Mount Horeb while also forming an "M" for the Virgin Mary. The roots lie in the "Internationale Christliche Rundfunkgemeinschaft" (ICR e. V.), founded by ORF culture editor Siegfried Dobretsberger, which had airtime as "Radio Neues Europa" on local FM frequencies in southern Germany in the 1980s (in Munich always on Sundays on 89.0 MHz). In 1995 parish priest Richard Kocher was elected chairman of the ICR; through his work as parish administrator of St. Anton in Balderschwang the radio activities increasingly shifted to the Oberallgäu, where the administrative centre was later built in Immenstadt. On 8 December 1996 — the feast of the Immaculate Conception — the first Catholic 24-hour radio programme called radio horeb went on air via the Astra satellite, modelled on Radio Maria Italy. With the founding of the Radio Maria World Family in 1998, radio horeb became part of the international Christian radio network from the start; in Munich the name changed to "radio horeb München" in 2000.

Donations, Volunteers and 30,000 Podcasts

radio horeb is financed exclusively by its listeners' donations — no advertising. The carrier is the non-profit Internationale Christliche Rundfunkgemeinschaft; programme director is the Augsburg diocesan priest Dr. Richard Kocher. The station has around 300,000 listeners, 65 permanent staff and over 1,000 volunteers; studios are in Balderschwang (the Medienhaus headquarters), Munich, Berlin, Ravensburg and Kevelaer. The podcast library holds over 30,000 programmes. The five programme pillars are liturgy, Christian spirituality, life coaching, music and news; a Holy Mass is broadcast live daily from various Catholic churches in Germany, and the radio academy produced by Vatican Radio is taken over daily at 6 p.m. The station is receivable nationwide on DAB+, via cable, satellite, internet, telephone, voice assistants and the Horeb app — and in greater Munich on FM 92.4 MHz.
