About Radio National

Radio National

Radio National is the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's national ideas and talk network: a commercial-free radio service broadcasting news analysis, arts, science, history, music and long-form conversation to every corner of Australia. Carried on dozens of AM and FM frequencies from Sydney to Darwin, on DAB+ digital radio, digital television and online streaming, it is the direct descendant of the ABC's original 1932 national programme service and one of the oldest continuously operating national radio networks in the English-speaking world. Its schedule is built around extended interviews, documentary features and specialist programs — the kind of slow, substantial radio that commercial networks rarely attempt.

Overview

Radio National is operated by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), Australia's publicly funded national broadcaster, and sits alongside Local Radio, Triple J, ABC Classic and ABC NewsRadio in the ABC's radio portfolio. Unlike the ABC's metropolitan Local Radio stations, which opt out for city-level breakfast, morning and drive programs, Radio National broadcasts a single national schedule, with regional transmitters carrying the same feed. The network's brief has always been the serious end of the dial: current affairs analysis, science, religion and ethics, history, literature, classical and world music, and the arts. Because the ABC carries no advertising, Radio National's programs run to whatever length their subject demands — a signature of the network since its earliest days.

The network's Sydney outlet is 2RN on 576 AM; other capital-city frequencies include 846 AM in Canberra (2RN), 729 AM in Adelaide (5RN), 792 AM in Brisbane (4RN) and 585 AM in Perth (6RN). In practice, most listeners encounter Radio National through the ABC listen app or the abc.net.au/radionational stream, where every program is also published as a podcast.

History

The 2FC origins

Radio National traces its lineage to 2FC, a Sydney station that made its first test broadcast on 5 December 1923 and went officially to air on 9 January 1924. The letters stood for Farmer and Company, the Sydney department store that originally owned it. 2FC was one of the private "A-class" stations funded by listener licence fees, and in 1929 programming for it and its fellow A-class stations was contracted to the Australian Broadcasting Company, a consortium of entertainment interests. The ABC — then still a private company — bought 2FC outright in 1937.

The 1932 national network

The decisive moment came on 1 July 1932, when the Australian Broadcasting Commission was established under federal legislation, taking over the National Broadcasting Service's twelve stations. Those twelve — 2FC and 2BL in Sydney, 3AR and 3LO in Melbourne, 4QG in Brisbane, 5CL in Adelaide, 6WF in Perth, 7ZL in Hobart, plus relay stations 2NC Newcastle, 2CO Corowa, 4RK Rockhampton and 5CK Crystal Brook — became the foundation of the national broadcaster. Prime Minister Joseph Lyons inaugurated the ABC at 8pm that evening. From this point, the ABC developed a system of program relays linking stations across the continent, and Radio National dates its existence as a distinct network to this 1932 reorganisation — a structure consciously modelled on the BBC's National Programme.

Building the relay system

Through the 1930s the ABC extended the network's reach with purpose-built regional stations. 6WN Perth opened on 5 October 1938, 2CY Canberra on 23 December 1938 (officially opened by Lyons himself), and further relays followed in the decades after the war. The early network was known at various times as the National Programme and later as "Radio 2", distinguishing it from the metropolitan "Radio 1" services that would become ABC Local Radio. Parliamentary broadcasts, which began under the Parliamentary Proceedings Broadcasting Act 1946, were carried on the national network for decades, frequently disrupting its schedule — a source of complaint in ABC annual reports — until the dedicated Parliamentary Broadcasting Network was created in 1988.

Radio National in the modern era

The network's current name, Radio National, consolidated its identity as the ABC's home for ideas broadcasting: a national feed of talk, documentary and music programming with no regional opt-outs. It has survived every wave of media reform since — the arrival of FM, the launch of digital radio in 2009, and the shift to on-demand listening — by converting its long-form strengths into one of Australia's most downloaded podcast catalogues. Programs such as The Science Show, Late Night Live, Background Briefing, Earshot, The History Listen, The Music Show and Big Ideas have multi-decade histories on the network, and their archives amount to an oral history of Australian intellectual life.

Programming

Radio National's weekday schedule is anchored by Breakfast, a news and interview program that opens the day with political interviews, and RN Drive in the late afternoon. Between them runs a spine of specialist content: The Science Show, one of the longest-running science programs in world broadcasting, presented for decades by Robyn Williams; The Health Report; The Music Show, covering contemporary and art music; and late-evening programs including Late Night Live, the long-running interview program hosted by Phillip Adams, and The Minefield, the ethics and philosophy discussion.

Documentary strands are central to the network's reputation. Background Briefing has produced investigative audio journalism since the late 1980s; Earshot presents feature documentaries and creative audio; Rear Vision places the week's news in historical context; and Awaye! covers Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts and culture. Religion and ethics programming — including The Religion and Ethics Report and Soul Search — reflects the network's charter obligation to reflect the full range of Australian belief and thought. Weekend programming leans into the arts: Books and Arts strands, the long-running music programs, and The Year That Made Me, in which notable Australians reflect on a formative year.

Music on Radio National is deliberately eclectic rather than chart-driven, spanning classical, jazz, world and contemporary Australian composition — a continuation of the "fine music" tradition that the national network inherited from 2FC's early concert broadcasts.

Coverage and how to listen

Radio National is carried on AM and FM transmitters in every state and territory — 576 AM in Sydney (2RN), 846 AM in Canberra, 729 AM in Adelaide, 792 AM in Brisbane, 585 AM in Perth and 657 AM in Darwin, among dozens of regional frequencies — as well as on DAB+ digital radio in the capital cities, on digital television, and via the ABC listen app and website stream. Because the schedule is national and unbroken, a listener in Broome hears the same program at the same time as a listener in Hobart. Every program is published as a podcast, making Radio National one of the ABC's most successful on-demand audio brands.

Community and cultural role

As a commercial-free national talk network, Radio National occupies a position no commercial broadcaster attempts: hours-long interviews, full-length lectures, radio drama and documentary, and specialist science and arts coverage that would not survive a ratings-driven schedule. Its presenters and producers have historically come from academia, journalism, music and the arts, and the network functions as a training ground and showcase for Australian documentary makers. The ABC's charter requires it to provide "innovative and comprehensive broadcasting services" of a high standard; Radio National is the clearest expression of that obligation in audio.
