About Rai Italia
Overview
Rai Italia is the international television service of RAI, Italy's public national broadcaster, operated by Rai Internazionale under an agreement with the Italian government to develop the presence of public service broadcasting abroad. Launched on 1 January 1992 as Rai International, it broadcasts a mix of the best programming from RAI's domestic channels alongside original programmes created for Italian communities overseas, including news, discussion programmes, drama, documentaries and sports coverage such as live games from Italy's Serie A football league.
The channel broadcasts via satellite in three localized feeds serving the Americas, Australia and Asia and Africa, targeting Italian expatriates, citizens of Italian descent and non-Italians interested in Italian language and culture. Its history spans more than three decades, from a satellite relay of domestic output to a dedicated international network distributed by Rai World.
Roots in Rai Corporation
Rai Italia's origins can be traced to the establishment of the American subsidiary Rai Corporation in 1959, which distributed radio and television programmes in the United States with special attention to the Italian-American community. Production began in 1971 with a two-hour programming block for the New York metropolitan area delivered over cable.
The schedule grew steadily: by the mid-1980s it totalled five and a half hours including a variety show, a Domenica Sportiva segment and a local newscast, and the following year expanded to seventeen hours a week. Relays from Italy brought the main news bulletins, a Serie A soccer match and cultural programmes, followed by a local newscast produced by Rai Corporation. In the early 1990s the RAI satellite network reached 29 cities, covering 68 per cent of the Italian-American community, before expanding to Latin America with an office in Montevideo distributing tapes to broadcasters unable to receive the satellite signal.
Launch as Rai International
On New Year's Day 1992, Rai International began worldwide satellite broadcasting, formalising the service for Italians abroad. In April 1996 the channel upgraded to 24-hour broadcasts, divided into three feeds: Rai International 1 for the Americas, Rai International 2 for Australia and Rai International 3 for Asia and Africa.
The three-feed structure allowed schedules to be localised for each continent's time zones and audiences. That same year the channel launched on Dish Network in the United States as a subscription option and in December on Optus Vision in Australia as part of a raft of ethnic channels, rapidly expanding its availability.
The Raitalia era
On 30 March 2008 the channel was rebranded as Raitalia, with its three schedules continuing to serve the continents. Since November 2009 it has carried the name Rai Italia, adopting a logo aligned with RAI's other public television networks and distributed by Rai World, the international arm of the broadcaster.
In 2012, following a cost reduction plan, the channel's self-produced programmes were discontinued, and its output concentrated on the best of RAI's domestic programming. From January 2017 it began broadcasting two daily editions of the regional TGR news bulletins, alternating among the 20 regional offices' productions.
Europe and the UK
Rai Italia's relationship with Europe has been complex. For a period its programmes were timeshared with Rai Med, the Arabic-language entertainment channel, on Eutelsat Hotbird 13 degrees East, available on the Sky platform at channel 804. In April 2014 the channel ended its broadcasts in Europe entirely.
No dedicated Rai Italia service is available for Europe, though RAI's domestic channels are widely available free-to-air in the region. For viewers in the United Kingdom, the channel's programming remains accessible through streaming: in 2022 RAI created a section on its RaiPlay platform dedicated to programming for Italians abroad, extending the service to online audiences including British viewers.
Programming
Rai Italia's schedules feature a mix of news, discussion-based programmes, drama and documentaries drawn from across RAI's channels, as well as sports coverage including four live games per week from Serie A. The channel also broadcasts religious programming, including the Sunday Mass from Saxa Rubra and the functions presided over by the Pope, serving the faith life of Italian communities abroad.
The service operates under an agreement with the Italian government, with a mission to meet the demands for information and services from Italian communities abroad. Its programming reflects both the best of Italian public television and the specific needs of expatriate viewers.
The Italian diaspora
Italy has one of the world's great diasporas, with millions of Italians and people of Italian descent living in the Americas, Australia and across Europe. The United Kingdom hosts a significant Italian community, concentrated in London but spread across the country, drawn by work, study and family ties.
For these communities, Rai Italia provides a daily link to home: the news bulletins of TG1 and TG2, the dramas and variety shows of Italian television, and the football that dominates the national conversation. The channel's role in maintaining linguistic and cultural identity across generations is central to its public service mission.
RAI and public broadcasting
RAI, Radiotelevisione Italiana, is Italy's national public broadcaster, operating the domestic channels Rai 1, Rai 2 and Rai 3 alongside a family of thematic channels. Its international service extends the public service remit beyond Italy's borders, serving citizens abroad as part of the state's commitment to its diaspora.
The channel's evolution from Rai Corporation's cable blocks to a global satellite network mirrors the broader history of international broadcasting, from the era of expatriate relays to the digital age of streaming platforms.
Digital future
The expansion of RaiPlay's offering for Italians abroad in 2022 marked a new phase for the service, bringing its programming to viewers on phones, tablets and smart TVs. As satellite distribution has receded in Europe, streaming has become the primary route for British viewers to access RAI's international output.
The digital shift allows the service to reach younger members of the diaspora who may never have owned a satellite dish, ensuring that RAI's connection to Italians abroad continues into the streaming era.
Language, culture and identity
Beyond news and entertainment, Rai Italia serves a deeper purpose: maintaining the Italian language and cultural identity among communities abroad. For second and third generations born outside Italy, the channel offers an immersion in the language of their grandparents, from the formal Italian of the news bulletins to the regional flavours of drama and variety.
The channel's religious programming, its regional news bulletins and its cultural documentaries all contribute to this mission, presenting Italy in its diversity rather than as a single stereotype. In an age of global streaming dominated by English-language content, a dedicated Italian-language service remains a vital cultural resource for the diaspora.
More than three decades on air
From its 1992 launch as Rai International to its current incarnation as Rai Italia, the channel has served Italian communities abroad for more than three decades. Through name changes, feed reorganisations and the end of its European satellite broadcasts, it has maintained its core mission: bringing Italy to Italians wherever they live.
For the Italian diaspora in the United Kingdom and around the world, Rai Italia remains the broadcast embodiment of home: the news, the drama, the football and the familiar voices of Italian public television, available across continents and now across screens, carrying Italy to Italians wherever they have made their lives. Its three decades of broadcasting stand as a testament to public service television's commitment to citizens beyond borders.
