About Railroad Model Craftsman

Railroad Model Craftsman: Scale Model Railroading Since 1933

Railroad Model Craftsman is a monthly American magazine devoted to scale model railroading, published by White River Productions in Bucklin, Missouri. First issued in March 1933 as The Model Craftsman, it is the oldest model railroading magazine in continuous publication in the United States, and for more than ninety years it has served hobbyists who build, detail and operate miniature railroads with an emphasis on craftsmanship and prototype research.

Where its great rival, Model Railroader, has traditionally taken a general-interest approach, Railroad Model Craftsman — RMC to its readers — has built its reputation on projects for active modelers: scratchbuilding and kitbashing articles, detailed plans, prototype research and layout features that assume a reader who intends to go straight from the page to the workbench.

Overview

RMC is published monthly, with an international standard serial number of 0033-877X, and is edited by Otto Vondrak. Its content focuses on projects and research for scale model railroad enthusiasts across the popular scales, mixing how-to construction articles with prototype documentation — drawings, photographs and histories of real locomotives, rolling stock and structures — that modelers use to build accurately.

The magazine's website, rrmodelcraftsman.com, publishes previews of product announcements, hobby news and features between issues, while print subscriptions remain the core of the title. Its publisher, White River Productions, is an independent Missouri company specializing in railroad enthusiast publishing.

History and Founding

The magazine was founded by Emanuele Stieri, and its first issue appeared in March 1933 under the name The Model Craftsman. As the name implied, it initially covered many areas of scale modeling, not trains alone. Ownership of the publishing company passed in 1934 to Charles A. Penn, its second editor, who grew the company and steered the publication toward scale models.

In April 1949 the magazine changed its focus exclusively to model trains and took the name Railroad Model Craftsman to reflect the new editorial direction. In the 1960s Hal Carstens bought the publication for Carstens Publications, which would publish it for the next half-century. Several smaller titles were folded into RMC over the years, including Toy Trains, Electric Trains and Hobby Railroading, Miniature Rail Roading, Model & Railway News and The O Gager, consolidating much of the hobby's early magazine heritage into its pages.

Publisher and Ownership

Since September 1, 2014, Railroad Model Craftsman has been published by White River Productions, which acquired it — along with Railfan & Railroad — from Carstens Publications as the Carstens operation wound down. White River Productions was founded in 1992 by Kevin EuDaly, initially to publish his book Missouri Pacific Diesel Power, and became his full-time venture in 1996. Headquartered in Bucklin, Missouri, the company also publishes Railfan & Railroad, Model Railroad News, Passenger Train Journal and a range of railroad books and annuals.

The Bucklin address explains the magazine's listing in Missouri: a hobby institution that spent most of its life in New Jersey publishing circles is now produced by a small independent publisher in rural Missouri, alongside a stable of railfan and modeling titles.

Editorial Content and Sections

A typical issue of Railroad Model Craftsman leads with construction projects: building or upgrading locomotives and freight cars, scratchbuilding structures, and detailing scenes, usually accompanied by step-by-step photography. Prototype features supply the research behind the models, with historical photographs, rosters and measured information about real railroad equipment and buildings.

Layout visits showcase readers' and noted modelers' railroads, while product news and reviews cover new releases from the model railroad industry. The magazine has historically been known for detailed plans and for an editorial willingness to run long, technical articles aimed at experienced builders — the "craftsman" in its title is a promise about the reader as much as the content.

The Carstens decades gave the magazine its modern identity. Under Hal Carstens, the company became a center of railroad hobby publishing — Carstens created Railfan magazine in-house in 1974, the title that grew into Railfan & Railroad — and RMC settled into its role as the craftsman-oriented half of a two-magazine hobby, publishing the detailed drawings, prototype photographs and advanced project articles that more casual titles avoided. When Carstens Publications ceased operations in 2014, the transfer to White River preserved not just the magazine but that editorial tradition, and the new owner kept the title monthly without a break in publication.

White River's wider list reinforces the same audience from several directions: scale-specific annuals such as the On30 Annual and HOn3 Annual, the product-focused Model Railroad News, and books for railroad historians all sit alongside RMC, so a reader who arrives for a construction project can be served by the same small Missouri publisher across most of their hobby interests.

Audience and Circulation

RMC's audience is the committed end of the model railroading hobby: adult modelers who scratchbuild, kitbash, weather and super-detail, and who care about matching models to prototype practice. It has never chased the beginner market as aggressively as its competitors; instead it positions itself as the magazine modelers grow into as their skills deepen.

That positioning has given the title an unusually loyal readership and a distinctive standing in hobby culture. Modelers commonly distinguish between the two big American titles by saying that one teaches you the hobby and the other challenges you in it — and RMC's longevity suggests the challenge has never lacked takers.

Print and Digital Editions

The magazine continues as a monthly print publication sold by subscription and through hobby shops, and White River Productions sells digital access and back content through its websites. RMC's site carries current-issue highlights, product announcement previews from manufacturers, and news posts that keep print subscribers connected between monthly issues.

White River has also used its annuals and special publications — titles devoted to particular scales and subjects — to extend the RMC approach into book-length treatments, while the monthly magazine remains the flagship for the company's modeling audience.

Notable Editors and Contributors

The founding editor was Emanuele Stieri, succeeded early on by Charles A. Penn, who shaped the magazine's direction for years. Under Carstens Publications, Hal Carstens himself was a towering figure in the hobby press, and the magazine drew on generations of well-known modelers and authors for its project articles.

After the White River acquisition, Stephen Priest was named editor beginning with the January 2015 edition. He was succeeded by Otto Vondrak in May 2019. Vondrak, a designer and railroad historian known in the hobby, has since led the magazine, writing editorials and features while overseeing its mix of modeling projects and prototype research.

Awards and Recognition

Railroad Model Craftsman's principal claim to distinction is longevity with continuity: founded in 1933, it can claim to be the oldest model railroading magazine in continuous publication in the United States. Its friendly rivalry with Model Railroader, founded a year later, is a hobby institution in itself — Model Railroader has countered with the tagline "Model railroading exclusively since 1934," a nod to RMC's first sixteen years as a general modeling title.

Both magazines were predated by The Model Maker, dating from 1924, but of the hobby's golden-age titles, RMC is the survivor — a fact its publisher marks by branding the magazine as bringing readers "the best in scale model railroading since 1933."

Recent Developments

Under White River Productions the magazine has maintained its monthly schedule and its project-driven formula, while the web operation has grown with manufacturer previews and hobby news. The 2014 transition itself was the title's biggest recent upheaval: White River announced the acquisition in a press release dated to take effect September 1, 2014, reassuring readers that both RMC and Railfan & Railroad would continue without interruption under the new owner.

More than ninety years after Emanuele Stieri's first issue, Railroad Model Craftsman continues to publish from Bucklin, Missouri — a small-town home for one of the longest-lived hobby magazines in America, still aimed squarely at the modeler with tools in hand.
