About RBI Bulletin
The RBI Bulletin is the monthly flagship publication of the Reserve Bank of India, the country's central bank. Published from Mumbai, it presents detailed information on India's economic and financial developments — monetary policy decisions, inflation trends, banking sector performance, fiscal indicators, the external sector, digital economy developments and the global economic outlook. The first issue of the Bulletin appeared in January 1947, months before Indian independence, and it has been published every month since, making it one of the longest-running economic periodicals in the country. Each issue combines analytical articles by RBI economists, speeches by the Bank's top leadership, and an extensive section of current statistics, and it is freely available on the Reserve Bank's official website, rbi.org.in.
History: since January 1947
The RBI Bulletin began with its first issue in January 1947, when the Reserve Bank was still operating under colonial-era arrangements and India was on the threshold of independence. From the start, the Bulletin carried a regular review of the state of the economy — a tradition that continued until 1995, when it was interrupted. In November 2020 the Bank revived the monthly "State of the Economy" article, restoring a practice that had begun with the very first issue. That continuity gives the Bulletin a remarkable archival depth: its back issues form a month-by-month record of India's economic policymaking from the planned-economy era through liberalisation to the present day. Economists, historians and journalists routinely mine the archive for the evolution of the Bank's thinking on inflation, growth, banking regulation and financial markets.
The publisher: Reserve Bank of India
The Reserve Bank of India, established in 1935 and headquartered in Mumbai, is India's central bank and the issuer of the country's currency. It conducts monetary policy, regulates banks and non-banking financial companies, manages the government's borrowing programme and the country's foreign exchange reserves, and oversees payment systems. The Bulletin is the Bank's principal vehicle for communicating its economic analysis to the public. It is prepared by the Department of Economic and Policy Research, the Bank's research arm, whose economists author many of the Bulletin's articles and whose data compilations fill its statistical section. The Bulletin thus reflects the Bank's dual identity as both policymaker and producer of economic knowledge.
The "State of the Economy" article
The centrepiece of the modern Bulletin is the monthly "State of the Economy" article, published since November 2020. It offers the Reserve Bank's assessment of current macroeconomic conditions — growth momentum, inflation dynamics, fiscal developments, external balances and financial market conditions — and is closely watched by economists, analysts, journalists and market participants. Because the article is prepared by the Bank's own economists, it is read as the closest available window into the central bank's current thinking between formal monetary policy statements. Recent editions have assessed, among other things, inflation remaining below the Bank's mandated target, growth momentum across sectors and the resilience of India's external sector supported by foreign direct investment inflows and adequate foreign exchange reserves.
Research articles and policy debate
Beyond the State of the Economy review, the Bulletin carries research articles on topics of policy relevance that, in the Bank's words, help inform and guide public debate. The Department of Economic and Policy Research has used Bulletin articles to contribute its economists' independent views to national discussions on issues including the impact of the Bank's pandemic-related policy measures, the relationship between the size of the RBI's balance sheet and inflation, the equilibrium real interest rate in India, drivers of movements in the yield curve, the impact of COVID-19 on food price mark-ups, rural-urban inflation dynamics, risk analysis of state finances, the quality of public expenditure, external debt sustainability and vulnerability, the privatisation and consolidation of public sector banks, the estimation of green GDP for India and the expansion of renewable energy. The range illustrates how the Bulletin functions as a platform for applied economic research with direct policy relevance.
Speeches
Each issue of the Bulletin reproduces recent speeches by the RBI Governor, Deputy Governors and other senior officials. These speeches — delivered at conferences, industry gatherings and academic forums — are primary sources for the Bank's communication strategy, and their publication in the Bulletin gives them a permanent, citable home. A recent issue, for example, contained seven speeches alongside three articles and the current statistics section. For researchers and the financial press, the speeches section is often the first place to look for signals of shifts in the Bank's stance on regulation, monetary policy or financial innovation.
Current statistics and data tables
The statistical section of the Bulletin is one of the most comprehensive regular compilations of Indian economic data available. It covers money and banking aggregates, prices, government accounts, trade and balance of payments, financial markets and more. The Bank continually expands this section: it has begun disseminating monthly tables on the total flow of financial resources to the commercial sector — from banks and non-bank sources including equity, commercial paper, corporate bonds, non-banking financial institutions, external commercial borrowings and foreign direct investment — and on outstanding credit to the commercial sector. It has also reduced the time lag in quarterly balance-of-payments statistics from ninety days to around sixty days, and is working toward monthly balance-of-payments releases. For economists and analysts, these tables are working tools as much as reading material.
Economic surveys published through the Bulletin
The Bulletin is also the publication channel for many of the Reserve Bank's regular surveys and special studies. A single year's issues carry studies such as monthly seasonal factors for select economic indicators, developments in India's balance of payments, international trade in banking services, the survey on computer software and information technology services exports, the annual census on foreign liabilities and assets of Indian companies, international banking statistics, the industrial outlook survey, India's foreign trade, the inflation expectations survey of households, analyses of private corporate sector performance, flow of funds accounts, the consumer confidence survey, assessments of the Union Budget, the survey of professional forecasters, corporate investment outlooks, the performance of the private corporate business sector, mid-year reviews of government finances and studies of the composition and ownership of deposits. Together these make the Bulletin a year-round survey operation as well as a journal.
Transparency and public communication
The Bulletin is a central instrument of the Reserve Bank's transparency. Central banks communicate not only through policy-rate decisions but through the steady publication of analysis and data, and the Bulletin is where the RBI explains how it sees the economy. Its articles and statistics allow outside economists to check, challenge and build upon the Bank's analysis — a discipline that strengthens the quality of economic policymaking. The revival of the State of the Economy article, the publication of independent research views by the Bank's economists and the continuous expansion of the statistical section all point in the same direction: a central bank that treats public economic knowledge as part of its mandate.
Readership
The Bulletin's readers include economists and financial analysts in banks, brokerages, rating agencies and research institutions; academics and students of economics; journalists covering the economy and financial markets; government officials and policymakers; and participants in competitive examinations, for whom the Bulletin is a standard source on the Indian economy. Its influence extends well beyond its formal circulation because its articles and data are widely cited in newspapers, television discussions, research papers and policy documents. A monthly Bulletin article on, say, the state of the economy or credit-deposit dynamics will typically generate news coverage and market commentary within hours of release.
Access and availability
The RBI Bulletin is published monthly and is available free of charge on the Reserve Bank of India's official website, rbi.org.in, where current and past issues can be read and downloaded. The Bank's bulletin archive stretches back through decades of issues, making it one of the most valuable freely available resources for the study of the Indian economy. For a publication that began in January 1947 and has appeared every month since, the Bulletin is both a living journal of economic analysis and a historical record — the central bank's own account, month by month, of nearly eighty years of India's economic life.
