About Realscreen
Realscreen
Overview
Realscreen is an international trade magazine and news service devoted exclusively to non-fiction and unscripted screen entertainment — documentary, factual series, reality formats and their creators, buyers and distributors worldwide. Published from Toronto by Brunico Communications, it describes its territory as the global business of factual content, and industry references repeat its own positioning as the only international magazine devoted exclusively to the non-fiction film and television industries.
Unlike its Canadian-focused sister title Playback, Realscreen is a global brand: its newsroom reports daily on commissioning, deals, appointments and festivals across North America, Europe, Asia and beyond, and it publishes a quarterly print magazine alongside its website and daily newsletter. It is also the brand behind the Realscreen Summit, for nearly three decades one of the principal international conferences for the unscripted business, and the Realscreen Awards. The brand is active in 2026 — its site carried daily international news through August 2026 and was soliciting entries for its 2026 MIPCOM Picks showcase — although Brunico has announced that the Summit and its other US events will be discontinued in 2027 while the publication continues. For WorldNM's purposes the listing city is Toronto, where Brunico is headquartered.
History
Realscreen's origins lie in Brunico Communications' international expansion of the mid-1990s. Brunico, the Toronto publisher founded by James Shenkman in 1986 around the Canadian trade magazine Playback, records in its corporate timeline that in 1996 it "goes global with Realscreen and Kidscreen magazines," with the Realscreen Summit and Kidscreen Summit following soon after. The publication's own editorial biography dates the magazine's launch more precisely to September 1997. Both datings are Brunico's; the brand plainly dates from that 1996–97 period, when the international trade in factual programming — channels multiplying, formats beginning to travel — was creating demand for a dedicated business publication.
The Summit grew into the brand's largest stage. Held for many years in Washington, DC, it billed itself as the world's biggest non-fiction and factual entertainment conference, drawing producers, broadcasters, distributors and agents for keynotes, pitching sessions and deal-making; sister events included Realscreen West on the US west coast and Realscreen London. The Realscreen Awards, honouring excellence in non-fiction and unscripted programming, were launched in 2009, according to Brunico's timeline. In the 2020s the Summit moved with Brunico's wider events strategy: after the company acquired the NATPE markets out of bankruptcy in 2023, the Summit was staged in Miami alongside NATPE Global, running 2–4 February 2026 at the InterContinental Miami under a shared "Convergence" theme with keynotes from creator Dhar Mann and Bell Media president Sean Cohan.
In 2026 Brunico announced a strategic narrowing: citing market consolidation in the content business, it will discontinue its US events portfolio in 2027 — the Realscreen Summit, Kidscreen Summit and NATPE Global — and concentrate on its publications and the Banff World Media Festival. The company stated explicitly that Realscreen is proceeding with its full publishing mandate of daily news and analysis, and that the Realscreen Awards will continue annually.
Content and Coverage
Realscreen's journalism covers the unscripted business end to end: commissioning announcements and cancellations, format sales and adaptations, production company deals and consolidation, executive appointments, festival and market news from events such as MIPCOM, AIDC and Sunny Side of the Doc, and the strategic shifts of the broadcasters and streamers who buy factual content. Its homepage sections include breaking "Top News," executive-move coverage, and "Extra" and "The Intel" roundups gathering shorter items from across the sector.
The publication is known for franchise editorial products that structure the industry's conversation. Its MIPCOM Picks showcase selects standout factual titles ahead of the Cannes market — in August 2026 it was extending submission deadlines for the 2026 edition — and its Summit programming, from "30 Minutes With" commissioner sessions to pitching competitions, has set agendas the magazine then reports. The Realscreen Awards recognise achievement across non-fiction and unscripted categories, and results are covered as industry news in their own right.
Coverage is deliberately international and deal-oriented rather than critical: like other Brunico trades, Realscreen writes about programmes as products and companies as counterparties, for readers who commission, produce, finance or distribute them.
Audience and Reach
Realscreen's audience is the worldwide unscripted profession: producers and production-company executives, network and streaming commissioners, distributors and format licensors, agents, financiers and festival and market organisers. The brand's own descriptions stress that breadth — its publisher biography speaks of channels spanning the magazine, the daily newsletter, the website, data products and international events — and its Summit delegate lists historically ran from independent documentary makers to the unscripted heads of global networks and streamers.
No current audited circulation or traffic figure for Realscreen is published, and none is asserted here. The publisher's claims for the brand — editor-in-chief Barry Walsh's biography calls it "the world's foremost authority in non-fiction film and television" — are presented here as the publication's own characterisation. The verifiable evidence of reach is its longevity, its daily citation across the international entertainment trade press, and the seniority of the executives who have keynoted and attended its events over nearly thirty years.
Digital Presence
Realscreen's digital centre is realscreen.com, a daily news site with a searchable archive, subscription access and a daily newsletter; Brunico also lists a daily Realscreen newsletter among the brand's channels. The site publishes multiple stories a day from its Toronto base for an international readership, and its social and video output extends the magazine's franchises, including Summit session content and the MIPCOM Picks.
The print magazine continues in parallel: industry references describe Realscreen as publishing a quarterly printed magazine, a pattern it has maintained while sister title Playback is online-only. That dual structure — quarterly print for features and analysis, digital for breaking news — is set to become the brand's whole business after 2026, when the Summit ends under Brunico's announced events wind-down and the publication and its awards carry the brand forward.
Ownership and Organisation
Realscreen is a trademark of, and is published by, Brunico Communications Ltd., the Toronto business-media company founded in 1986, purchased in 2007 by an investor group led by Russell Goldstein, who remains president and CEO. Brunico's head office is at 100–366 Adelaide Street West, Toronto. Its other brands include Playback, Strategy, Media in Canada and Kidscreen, plus the Banff World Media Festival.
The Realscreen brand has been led editorially by Barry Walsh, editor-in-chief and content director, who, per his published biography, has served as the publication's editor since 2009 and previously worked at Brunico's former sister title Boards. On the business side, Brunico's company page lists Claire Macdonald as vice-president and publisher of Realscreen, overseeing the magazine, newsletter, website and events; trade coverage of Brunico's 2026 events announcement reported that Macdonald would leave the company as the US events portfolio winds down. Mary Maddever, Brunico's senior executive vice-president and chief content officer and a former leader of the Realscreen content team, was billed in 2026 event coverage as executive vice-president, Realscreen and NATPE executive content director.
