About Refinery29

Refinery29

Refinery29 is an American multinational digital media and entertainment website focused on young women, covering fashion, beauty, style, culture, politics, money, wellness, and lifestyle. Founded in 2005 in New York City as a local city guide, the publication grew into one of the most prominent women-focused digital media brands of the 2010s, expanding to editions in the United States, Germany, and France. After its acquisition by Vice Media in 2019 and Vice's bankruptcy in 2023, the company was purchased by Sundial Media Group in April 2024, which remains its owner. Headquartered in the Financial District of Manhattan in New York City, Refinery29 continues to publish across verticals from fashion and beauty to news and entertainment. Its official website is refinery29.com.

Founding

Refinery29 was co-founded in 2005 by Justin Stefano, Philippe von Borries, Piera Gelardi, and Christene Barberich as a New York City guide emphasizing local fashion and style. The name of the website alludes to the idea of distilling information down to its essence — refining the overwhelming world of style into something essential and digestible, a concept the founders carried from their earliest editorial meetings into the brand's global identity. The founders started the company in a kitchen, self-funding the operation for its first five years before raising outside capital. In its earliest form the site's content was relatively gender-neutral, but as it grew it became clear that the publication was resonating most strongly with women readers, and the founders oriented the brand around that audience. TechCrunch described the early site as a cross between DailyCandy and Style.com, capturing its position between email-newsletter commerce and fashion-magazine editorial.

Growth and Funding

After five years of bootstrapped operation, Refinery29 began raising institutional capital and expanding its coverage beyond New York to other major American cities and then internationally. The company raised a seed round of $500,000 from angel investors including Ramesh Haridas, Mark Mitchell, and Jim Yang in 2010, followed by a $4.5 million round from Floodgate and First Round Capital in July 2011 and a $20 million round in 2013. In 2015, the company raised $50 million in funding from Scripps Networks Interactive and WPP Ventures, a round that valued the company at $290 million and brought its total capital raised to $80 million. A subsequent $45 million round in 2016 was led by Turner. The company grew to more than 450 employees globally, with offices in Los Angeles, London, and Berlin, and reported reaching an audience of more than 500 million globally as of 2017. Editions launched in the United Kingdom in 2015 and in Germany in 2016, with the brand later maintaining editions in the United States, Germany, and France, and a Toronto outpost opened in 2018 to serve the Canadian market.

Editorial Voice and Audience

Refinery29 built its brand as a one-stop destination for millennial-minded women, combining service journalism about fashion and beauty with coverage of politics, culture, food, technology, and social issues. The site's tone blended accessibility with advocacy, and its expansion into news and opinion reflected the founders' ambition to be more than a style publication. Initiatives such as the partnership with Planned Parenthood to produce Her Shorts, a scripted series about reproductive and sexual health, illustrated the brand's willingness to take positions on issues affecting its audience. The publication also invested in original film and television projects, including the Shatterbox anthology of short films by women directors and the FX documentary series PRIDE, chronicling LGBTQ history.

29Rooms and Live Experiences

One of Refinery29's signature creations was 29Rooms, an immersive, Instagram-friendly art and culture experience that toured major American cities. Conceived as a physical expression of the brand's editorial world, 29Rooms featured dozens of artist-designed installations exploring themes of creativity, identity, and culture, and it drew large crowds during its runs in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and other cities. The event became a model for how digital media brands could translate online audiences into ticketed live experiences, and it remained one of the company's most recognizable properties through the Vice Media era.

Vice Media Acquisition

On October 2, 2019, Vice Media announced that it would acquire Refinery29 in a deal reported to be worth approximately $400 million, valuing the combined company at $4 billion. Vice CEO Nancy Dubuc framed the merger as a consolidation of two of the strongest independent voices in digital media, arguing that the combined company would build a scaled, diversified global media business. Refinery29 remained a distinct brand within Vice's portfolio, continuing to create programming across its verticals and to produce live experiences such as 29Rooms alongside its premium film and television slate. In March 2021, the Pedestrian Group announced a multi-year deal to become the Australian digital publishing home of Vice Media and Refinery29, extending the brand's reach to a new market.

Vice Bankruptcy and Sundial Purchase

On May 15, 2023, Vice Media formally filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection as part of a sale process to a consortium of lenders including Fortress Investment Group, Soros Fund Management, and Monroe Capital, which invested $225 million as a credit bid for nearly all of the company's assets. The bankruptcy ended the era of Vice as an independent digital media giant and threw the future of its brands, including Refinery29, into uncertainty. In April 2024, Sundial Media Group purchased Refinery29; at the time of the sale, the publication had around one hundred employees and roughly $100 million in annual revenue. The acquisition returned the brand to standalone ownership under a media group focused on its continued operation.

Current Operations

Under Sundial Media Group ownership, Refinery29 remains an active publication headquartered at 225 Broadway in New York City's Financial District. The site continues to publish daily coverage across fashion, beauty, entertainment, politics, money, and wellness, maintaining its positioning as a voice for young women. Its international editions in Germany and France extend the brand's reach in Europe, and its social and video operations continue to serve the millennial and Gen Z audiences that defined its growth. The company has adapted to the post-2019 realities of digital media — reduced scale, diversified revenue, and consolidation — while preserving the brand identity its founders established two decades earlier.

Place in Digital Media History

Refinery29's trajectory traces the full arc of the digital media boom and its aftermath: a bootstrapped startup that became a venture-backed darling, a global brand valued in the hundreds of millions, a prize acquisition in a landmark merger, a property caught in a high-profile bankruptcy, and finally a surviving brand under new ownership. Its co-founders, Justin Stefano and Philippe von Borries, served as co-CEOs through much of that journey, with Piera Gelardi and Christene Barberich shaping the brand's creative and editorial direction from its earliest days. The publication's influence on how media companies speak to young women — through a mix of style service, cultural commentary, and political engagement — remains its defining contribution, and its name endures as one of the most recognizable brands of the social media era of publishing. From a kitchen-table city guide to a multinational media property, the company's twenty-year history reflects both the ambitions and the vulnerabilities of the venture-funded digital media generation.
