About Rettungs-Magazin
Rettungs-Magazin
Rettungs-Magazin is a German trade journal for the emergency rescue service and disaster protection, published by the Ebner Media Group GmbH & Co. KG in Ulm. Founded in December 1995 in Bremen, the magazine appears every two months, six times a year, with the ISSN 1430-1873. It is the sister title of the Feuerwehr-Magazin, the monthly fire service journal, and addresses full-time and volunteer personnel from emergency rescue and disaster protection across the German-speaking world. The magazine presents selected rescue services and special units of the aid organisations in each issue, explains current technical innovations, and provides case reports and background articles on emergency medical topics. It is the only trade journal in the rescue service industry that is audited by the IVW and available both by subscription and in retail throughout Germany.
Overview
Rettungs-Magazin addresses the broad target group of the rescue service: full-time and volunteer emergency paramedics, emergency physicians, dispatchers, and the personnel of the aid organisations and disaster protection units. The magazine's editorial programme is designed for a readership with different levels of training and different interests, placing particular emphasis on articles written in generally understandable language. The founding publisher Jan Gaede formulated the premise: to provide readers with technically sound contributions that can be understood without a medical dictionary. The magazine's focus topics are operational practice, technology, and training and continuing education.
Each issue presents selected rescue services or special units of the aid organisations, from the Malteser rescue service in Frankfurt to the rescue services of Switzerland. The portraits document the diversity of the German rescue service landscape: municipal rescue services, the aid organisations' units, and specialised teams for water rescue, mountain rescue and disaster response. Technical innovations are explained with practical relevance, from new medical devices to vehicle technology. Case reports and background articles cover emergency medical topics, from dementia therapy in the rescue service to the chances of volunteers in the new emergency paramedic profession. The magazine's recurring sections include law, international news, new media and continuing education dates. The magazine appears in print and as an e-paper, with the annual subscription priced at 35.80 euros in Germany.
History
Rettungs-Magazin was founded in December 1995 in Bremen, where the first issue appeared in that month. From the beginning the magazine was offered both by subscription and in retail. It was conceived as the sister title of the Feuerwehr-Magazin, the fire service journal founded in 1983, extending the publisher's "blue light" portfolio to the rescue service. Since 1 January 1996 both titles have been published by the Ebner Media Group in Ulm (until 2019: Ebner Verlag). The founding publisher was Jan Gaede, who formulated the magazine's editorial premise of accessible specialist journalism: technically sound contributions that can be understood without a medical dictionary.
Over the decades the magazine has accompanied the professionalisation of the German rescue service, from the introduction of the emergency paramedic profession to the digitalisation of dispatch centres and the growing demands on disaster protection. The Notfallsanitätergesetz of 2014, which created the emergency paramedic as the highest non-medical qualification in the rescue service, was a defining topic of the magazine's reporting, with the magazine covering the transition from the rescue assistant to the new profession and the chances of volunteers in the new system. The magazine's editorial office was long based in Bremen, with the address Hinter der Mauer 9 in Bremen documented in the media data. The magazine's publisher is Jan-Erik Hegemann, the editor-in-chief is Lars Schmitz-Eggen, and the managing director of the Ebner Media Group is Marco Parrillo. The magazine's long-standing position as the IVW-audited journal of the rescue service industry has made it the reference medium of the branch.
Content and Sections
The editorial content of Rettungs-Magazin is organised around the focus topics of operational practice, technology, and training and continuing education. Each issue presents selected rescue services or special units of the aid organisations in detailed portraits, from urban rescue services to specialised units. Technical innovations are presented with practical relevance, explaining new devices, vehicles and procedures for the rescue service's daily work. Case reports from emergency practice provide learning examples, while background articles cover emergency medical topics in depth.
The magazine's recurring sections include law, with contributions on the legal questions of the rescue service; international news, reporting on rescue services abroad; new media, presenting books, apps and digital tools; and continuing education dates, listing training events for the industry. Changing series over the years have covered topics from job applications in the rescue service to specific medical questions. The magazine's articles are written to be accessible to the broad target group, from volunteers to emergency physicians. The website rettungsdienst.de extends the print content with current news from the rescue service. The magazine's practical tips — from the correct handling of medical devices to the legal aspects of emergency operations — serve the daily work of the rescue service's personnel. The changing series over the years have kept the magazine's content fresh, addressing new topics as the rescue service's challenges evolve.
