About River 94.9
River 94.9
River 94.9 is a commercial adult-contemporary radio station licensed to Ipswich and broadcasting to south-east Queensland on 94.9 MHz FM. Owned by the Australian Radio Network (ARN) through Star Broadcasting Network Pty Ltd, it programs a music-variety format with a strong local emphasis on Ipswich, one of Queensland's fastest-growing cities. The station's callsign is 4MIX. It began in 1990 as QFM on 106.9 MHz, became Star 106.9 in 1997, and moved to its current frequency and identity as River 94.9 in October 2001. It has consistently dominated Ipswich radio surveys while its powerful signal spills across Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Logan, the Lockyer Valley and Toowoomba.
Overview
River 94.9 transmits on 94.9 MHz FM with a listed power of 50 kW and a height above average terrain of 319 metres, a high-power regional FM facility. Its licence area is Ipswich RA1, but its broadcast reach extends across south-east Queensland. The format is adult contemporary, and the branding is River 94.9, a name chosen for its regional resonance — evoking the Brisbane River, Riverstage and River City rather than a single suburb, and offering flexibility for growth.
The station is owned by ARN (Star Broadcasting Network Pty Ltd), part of the Australian Radio Network's regional portfolio. Although it broadcasts into parts of Brisbane, it is not officially counted in the Brisbane metropolitan ratings surveys; instead it is measured in dedicated Ipswich surveys, where it has been the dominant station. That dual character — an Ipswich-licensed station with a south-east Queensland footprint — has defined its strategy and its controversies.
Because the inventory flags the station's domain as unverified, this profile leaves the website field empty and does not assert an official domain.
History
Ipswich went without a local radio station from 1976 to 1990, after the departure of 4IP left the city silent. That changed on 20 February 1990, when QFM (callsign 4QFM) launched on 106.9 MHz from Ipswich. From its launch until 1997, QFM broadcast a contemporary hit music format, giving Ipswich its own CHR voice. The station's studios were at Raymonds Hill, and its early years built a roster of local personalities.
In 1997 QFM rebranded as Star 106.9, dropping CHR for a classic-hits format. The Star era positioned the station as an adult music alternative, and a television commercial of the period even pitched it as Toowoomba's newest station, reflecting its westward reach. Prior to the frequency move, the callsign was changed from 4QFM to 4MIX — reportedly to prevent ARN's 97.3fm from using the "Mix" positioner employed by its sister stations. Star 106.9 closed at 4pm on 12 October 2001, signing off with Billy Joel's "It's Still Rock and Roll to Me."
Two hours of transmitter tests later, at 6pm, the station relaunched on 94.9 MHz as River 94.9. The move was driven by interference: on 106.9 the station suffered from two very strong neighboring signals, ABC Classic FM on 106.1 and triple j on 107.7. The shift to 94.9 eliminated that problem and, as a bonus, gave the station equal or better reach than the Brisbane stations toward the west and Toowoomba, attracting advertising from businesses across those regions. The station dubbed the change the "Riverlution" and launched a hit-radio format, promoting itself as a brand-new FM station for Brisbane aimed at 18-to-40-year-olds, with a Southbank office and studio supplementing its North Ipswich base.
That Brisbane tilt proved contentious. In 2005, following complaints from the major Brisbane stations, River changed its format to adult variety and refocused on the Ipswich area it is licensed to serve. The episode illustrated the regulatory tension around its powerful signal: a regional licence with metropolitan spill.
Ownership changed several times. The station was previously owned by Rural Press and Bundaberg Broadcasters as part of the Star Broadcasting Network. In May 2008 it was sold to Grant Broadcasters by Fairfax Media, a divestiture required by ACMA's diversity rules limiting overlapping licences in a market. In 2008 River 94.9 served as the official south-east Queensland broadcaster of the Macquarie Radio Network's Olympic radio coverage. In November 2021, ARN's parent Here, There & Everywhere agreed to acquire Grant Broadcasters' 46 stations; the deal was finalised on 4 January 2022, bringing River 94.9 into ARN and giving Grant's stations access to the iHeartRadio platform in regional areas. To comply with ACMA's ownership limits, ARN was forced to sell 4KQ, which went to the Sports Entertainment Network in May 2022.
The station marked 25 years on air in February 2015, celebrating with special guests and archival audio. The anniversary recalled names from the Raymonds Hill studios including Ashleigh Mac, The Fatboys, Wayne Roberts, Walter Williams, Alan Roebuck and Guy Dobson — a reminder of the station's deep local roots beneath its corporate ownership changes.
Programming
River 94.9's published weekday schedule blends local Ipswich shows with networked content. Breakfast is hosted by Marnie (Marnie Titheradge) and Campo (Paul Campion) from 5am to 9am, the flagship local shift. Mornings follow with Ilija (Ilija Dugandzic) from 9am to 1pm, and Drive with Hinksy (Greg Hinks) from 1pm to 6pm. From Sunday to Friday, 6pm to 7pm carries a simulcast of Nine News Queensland television. Saturday mornings feature "The Saturday Start-Up" from 6am to 10am. At other times the station takes a network feed from ARN's regional hub at Hot Tomato on the Gold Coast.
The breakfast show is the station's ratings engine. In Ipswich surveys, Marnie & Campo have drawn more listeners than the combined breakfast audiences of rival Brisbane stations' offerings in the Ipswich market, a testament to the power of local content in a regional licence area. The station's management credits its "live, local and community connected" approach for that loyalty.
The format is adult contemporary music variety, positioned between the CHR energy of its QFM youth and the classic-hits focus of the Star years. Late-night programming has at times included dance music strands, but the core is broad-appeal adult music with local information.
Coverage & Audience
The 50 kW signal from a high site gives River 94.9 formidable coverage. Its footprint runs from the Gold Coast in the south, through Logan and Brisbane, out west to the Lockyer Valley and Toowoomba. That reach makes it a regional powerhouse: officially an Ipswich station, practically a south-east Queensland broadcaster.
Ipswich itself is central to the story. Situated about 40km west of Brisbane and recognised as one of Queensland's fastest-growing cities, its population of around 230,000 substantially overlaps the Brisbane radio licence area — which is precisely why the station's signal and market definition have been contested. The first dedicated Ipswich radio survey in 2017 showed River 94.9 utterly dominant: a 26.4% share of the 10+ audience, with nearest competitor hit105 on 14.3%. Its breakfast show drew more Ipswich listeners than Triple M, B105 and triple j's breakfast offerings combined in that market, and its mornings show reached a 31.6% share.
A later Xtra Insights survey for Ipswich showed the dominance continuing and growing: River 94.9 rose 4.0 points to a 33.6% share among all people 10+, with an extraordinary 41.6% share among 18-to-24-year-olds (up 13.6 points). Marnie & Campo's breakfast rose 3.9 points to 33.0%, well clear of B105 and KIIS. Content director Drew Chapman credited the local team's connection with listeners, and general manager David Wiltshire pointed to listener support as validation of the station's local strategy.
Ownership
River 94.9 is owned by the Australian Radio Network through Star Broadcasting Network Pty Ltd, part of ARN's regional station portfolio. ARN acquired the station as part of its January 2022 purchase of 46 Grant Broadcasters stations, a deal that created what the company described as Australia's leading radio and digital audio business. The acquisition brought Grant's regional stations, including River 94.9, onto ARN's iHeartRadio platform.
The ownership history — Rural Press and Bundaberg Broadcasters' Star Broadcasting Network, then Grant Broadcasters, now ARN — mirrors the consolidation of Australian regional radio. Each change of hands has preserved the River 94.9 brand and its Ipswich licence, while plugging the station into larger networks for programming, sales and digital distribution.
Digital Presence
As part of ARN, River 94.9 is distributed through the iHeartRadio platform, giving its regional audience app-based and smart-speaker access alongside FM reception. The Grant Broadcasters acquisition was explicitly framed as bringing Grant's stations onto iHeartRadio in regional areas, and River 94.9 benefits from that digital integration.
As noted, the inventory does not verify an official domain, so no website is asserted in this profile. The station's verifiable digital presence rests on its ARN/iHeartRadio distribution and its listings in radio directories and ratings reports. From QFM's 1990 launch to the Riverlution of 2001 and its current ARN ownership, River 94.9 has remained Ipswich's own station — with a signal big enough to be heard across the south-east.
