About Rosario3

Rosario3

Rosario3 is the digital news portal of Grupo Televisión Litoral, based in Rosario, Santa Fe Province, Argentina. Launched in 2005 as the online news operation of the Rosario media group built around Canal 3, it publishes in Spanish at rosario3.com and covers Rosario and its region in real time: city and provincial politics, society, sport, entertainment and general news, together with national and world coverage. It describes itself as the most-visited digital newspaper in Rosario and the region, and it operates with its own digital newsroom inside one of Argentina's most important regional media groups.

Origins: a television group goes online

Rosario3 cannot be separated from the history of its parent. Grupo Televisión Litoral was founded in 1965 by businessman Alberto Gollán, together with partners including Ernesto Juan Daumas, José Juan Bertagni and Rodolfo Pedro Dianda, to establish a television station in Rosario. Its station, LT 83 TV Canal 3, received its federal licence in August 1964 and began regular broadcasting on 20 June 1965, Argentine Flag Day. Canal 3 became the group's flagship and one of Rosario's defining media institutions, starting colour broadcasts in 1980, covering events such as the Rosario matches of the 1978 FIFA World Cup and the visit of Pope John Paul II in 1987, and surviving setbacks including the collapse of its transmission tower in 2007.

In 2005, adapting to the new internet era, Televisión Litoral launched Rosario3.com. The portal carried the Canal 3 brand — the 3 in its name is the channel's number — into digital news, but with a structure of its own: a dedicated digital newsroom publishing continuously rather than a simple repository of television content. The launch made the group an early mover among Argentine regional broadcasters in building a serious digital-native news operation, a decade before that became the industry norm.

Ownership and the Scaglione era

The group's ownership changed fundamentally in 2015. After the death of founder Alberto Casiano Gollán, a 55 per cent share in Televisión Litoral was sold for around thirteen million United States dollars to local businessmen associated with the Fundación Libertad group. Since that sale the group has been majority-controlled by Gustavo Scaglione and Josefina Daminato, who between them hold the controlling stake, alongside the founder's daughter Ana Cecilia Gollán, who retained her share, and other minority shareholders. Scaglione serves as the group's chief executive, and its headquarters are at Presidente Perón 8101 in Rosario.

Under its new owners the group expanded well beyond Rosario. Its holdings grew to include television stations in other provinces, radio stations in several cities, the historic Rosario newspaper La Capital, a stake in the Buenos Aires financial newspaper Ámbito Financiero, and digital outlets in other regions. In October 2025 the holding led by Scaglione announced the acquisition of the entire share capital of Telefe, Argentina's leading television network, from Paramount — a transaction that transformed the owners of Rosario3's parent group into proprietors of the country's largest broadcaster. Through all of that expansion, Rosario3 remained the group's digital news flagship in its home city.

Rosario: the city the portal serves

Rosario is Argentina's third great urban centre, a port city on the Paraná River in southern Santa Fe Province and the heart of the country's agro-export complex, through which a large share of Argentine grain and oilseed production reaches world markets. It is a city of strong identities: the birthplace of the Argentine flag, the home of football clubs Rosario Central and Newell's Old Boys and of Lionel Messi, and a major university and cultural centre. Its news agenda is correspondingly rich — port and agro-industrial economics, provincial and municipal politics, security and organised-crime questions that have marked the city's recent history, university life, culture and a football rivalry that organises much of the city's emotional calendar.

Rosario3's coverage is built for that city. Its real-time local reporting follows the municipality, the Santa Fe provincial government, the courts, the port economy and the streets; its sports coverage follows Central and Newell's with the intensity Rosario demands; and its society and entertainment sections carry the cultural agenda of a city that regards itself, with some justice, as a capital in its own right rather than a satellite of Buenos Aires.

Editorial coverage and newsroom

The portal publishes a full general-news service in Spanish, updated in real time. Its principal areas are Rosario and regional news; politics at municipal, provincial and national level; economy, including the agro-industrial and port sectors central to the region; society; police and courts; sport; and entertainment and culture, including the city's extensive listings of shows and events. The digital newsroom works alongside the group's television and radio newsrooms — Canal 3's local news programmes and the news output of Radio 2, the group's AM station — while maintaining its own publishing rhythm and staff.

That multimedia integration is the portal's structural advantage. A story can be reported by the group's journalists, broadcast on El Tres and Radio 2, and published, updated and archived on Rosario3, whose site becomes the permanent, searchable record of the group's journalism. The portal also carries the group's streaming and video content, extending its television journalism to digital audiences. Its self-description as the most visited digital newspaper in Rosario and the region reflects the audience position that this integration, and its twenty years of continuous publication, have built.

The group around the portal

Grupo Televisión Litoral's Rosario operations include Eltres TV, Radio 2 AM 1230, FM Vida 97.9 and Frecuencia Plus 93.1, together with Rosario3. Beyond Rosario, the group operates television channels in Tucumán, Salta, Bahía Blanca, Paraná and Patagonia, radio stations in Córdoba and elsewhere, and print titles headed by La Capital, Rosario's historic newspaper, founded in 1867 and acquired by the group in 2019. Rosario3 sits at the digital centre of this structure in the group's home market: it is the brand through which the group's Rosario journalism reaches the audience that now consumes most news on phones and computers.

The portal's name itself encodes that relationship. Just as Canal 3's call sign and number anchored the group's television identity from 1965, Rosario3 fused the city's name with the channel's number to create a digital brand that belonged simultaneously to the city and to the group. Two decades on, the brand is recognised across the region independently of the television station that inspired it.

Position in the regional media landscape

Rosario's media market is one of the strongest in Argentina's interior, with competing television stations, the historic La Capital, major radio stations and a generation of independent digital outlets. Within that market, Rosario3 holds the position of the leading multimedia group's digital flagship: the Media Ownership Monitor's documentation of the group, and the portal's own sustained audience claims, place it at the centre of the city's digital news consumption. Its coverage is routinely cited by provincial and national media on Rosario stories, and its real-time publishing sets the pace of the city's news cycle.

The portal also illustrates a broader Argentine pattern: the migration of regional broadcasting groups into digital news leadership. Where the first generation of Argentine digital natives was made of start-ups, groups such as Televisión Litoral brought capital, newsrooms and cross-media promotion to their portals, and in several interior cities those broadcaster-owned portals became the dominant digital news brands. Rosario3 is among the clearest and longest-running examples.

Real-time publishing and the city's news cycle

The portal's defining discipline is speed with continuity: Rosario stories are published as they break, updated as they develop and kept as the running record to which the city's other media, and its own group's television and radio programmes, refer. In a city whose agenda includes fast-moving security news, port and market information with daily economic consequences, and a football culture that generates news around the clock, that real-time function made the portal the first check of the day for much of Rosario's connected public. It is the practical meaning of its claim to be the region's most-visited digital newspaper: not a website visited occasionally, but the city's continuously updated front page.

Significance

Rosario3 matters because of where it sits: at the junction of Argentina's third city, one of its oldest regional media groups and the digital transformation of provincial journalism. Launched in 2005, owned since 2015 by the business group that went on to buy the country's largest television network, and publishing in real time for a metropolitan region of well over a million people, it is the digital face of Rosario's media establishment and one of the principal sources through which Rosario follows itself. Its two decades of operation span the entire modern history of Argentine online news, from the portal era to the mobile and streaming era, in one of the country's most news-intensive cities.
