Roth-Hilpoltsteiner Volkszeitung

The Roth-Hilpoltsteiner Volkszeitung (RHV) is the regional daily newspaper for the Roth district in Middle Franconia, Bavaria, appearing six times a week with local reporting on Roth, Hilpoltstein and the surrounding communities. Published in the town of Roth south of Nuremberg, the paper is one of the regional editions of the Nürnberger Nachrichten publishing network and takes the nationwide and regional mantle pages from the NN's Nuremberg newsroom. With a sold circulation of around 7,400 copies (IVW, 2nd quarter of 2025) and a history stretching back to 1915, the RHV is the dominant local newspaper in the Roth district and the official gazette in which the district's towns and municipalities publish their statutory notices.

Overview

The Roth-Hilpoltsteiner Volkszeitung appears Monday through Saturday from its newsroom in Roth, covering the town of Roth — seat of the district administration — and the wider Roth district, including Hilpoltstein, Spalt, Abenberg, Schwanstetten, Rednitzhembach, Röttenbach, Thalmässing, Heideck and Greding. The paper's identity is that of a classic German Heimatzeitung: its front section and local pages are produced by the local newsroom, while the national and international pages, the business section, culture and sport come from the Nürnberger Nachrichten in Nuremberg, with which the RHV is linked in the publishing community. The arrangement gives the paper the resources of a major regional newspaper — the NN group is one of Germany's large regional publishers, with total sold circulation of around 179,000 for the combined editions — while preserving a locally rooted product for the Roth district.

With 7,366 sold copies in the second quarter of 2025 (IVW, combined with the Nordbayerische Zeitung edition), the RHV is a small but firmly established title, and its reach is amplified by the Nordbayerische Nachrichten family of editions with which it is distributed. The readership is the classic subscriber base of the German local press: families, local decision-makers, club and association members, and readers who value the paper's dense local reporting — town council decisions, school news, church announcements, sports results and the family notices that make the paper a chronicle of the district's social life. The paper's local monopoly position in much of its distribution area means it is, for many communities, the only daily newspaper reporting on their affairs.

The RHV is published by Millizer und Riedel GmbH in Roth, in partnership with the Verlag Nürnberger Presse Druckhaus Nürnberg. Its newsroom sits at Hilpoltsteiner Straße 57 in Roth, under the direction of its editorial leadership. The paper is also available as an e-paper, and its online presence is embedded in the nordbayern.de portal of the Nürnberger Nachrichten group, where the RHV's local content appears alongside the output of the group's other regional editions.

History

The paper's roots go back to 1915, when it was founded in Roth as "Die Rother Volkszeitung". On 29 October 1949 — in the early years of the Federal Republic, when the newspaper licensing of the Allied occupation was giving way to a free press — the paper adopted its present name, Roth-Hilpoltsteiner Volkszeitung, extending its claim to the whole Roth-Hilpoltstein region. The longevity of the title is remarkable: few German local newspapers can trace an unbroken lineage back more than a century, and the RHV's volume numbering passed its 160th year in the early 2020s.

The decisive step in the paper's modern history was its integration into the Nürnberger Nachrichten publishing network. The NN, founded on 11 October 1945 by Joseph E. Drexel under licence No. 3 of the American military government in Bavaria, grew after the war into the dominant regional newspaper of Middle Franconia. The RHV joined the NN's family of regional editions — alongside titles such as the Erlanger Nachrichten, Fürther Nachrichten, Schwabacher Tagblatt, Hersbrucker Zeitung and Pegnitz-Zeitung — taking the NN's mantle pages while producing its own local sections in Roth. The partnership, institutionalised through the Verlag Nürnberger Presse Druckhaus Nürnberg, gave the small Roth paper access to a full-service newsroom in Nuremberg: national politics, the economy, culture and sport produced by one of Bavaria's largest editorial teams.

The most recent milestone came on 1 January 2026, when the Hilpoltsteiner Zeitung was merged into the Roth-Hilpoltsteiner Volkszeitung. The consolidation — reported in the German Wikipedia's Nürnberger Nachrichten article — reflects the ongoing concentration of the German regional press: small neighbouring titles are combined to preserve local journalism under a shared roof. For the RHV, the merger extended its coverage of the Hilpoltstein area, the southern part of the Roth district, and unified the district's daily newspaper market under a single brand.

Coverage and Content

The RHV's local pages are the heart of the paper: reporting from the district town of Roth and the municipalities of the Roth district, with a particular emphasis on the communities of Hilpoltstein, Spalt, Abenberg, Schwanstetten, Rednitzhembach, Röttenbach, Thalmässing, Heideck and Greding. The coverage follows the classic agenda of the German local daily: town and district council sessions, planning and construction projects, school and kindergarten news, police and court reports, church and club life, volunteer fire brigades, and the sports pages covering the district's football clubs, shooting associations and athletics. The paper is also the medium in which the district's towns publish their official notices — from cemetery statutes to land-use plans — making it an indispensable part of local administration.

The regional and national content comes from the Nürnberger Nachrichten: Bavarian state politics from the NN's Munich correspondents, national and international news from the shared newsroom, the business section, the culture pages and the sports section with its coverage of Franconian professional sport, above all 1. FC Nürnberg. Special editions and series mark the district's calendar: the Rothsee Triathlon — one of the world's largest long-distance triathlons, held at the Rothsee in the district — receives extensive coverage, as do the district's festivals, Christmas markets and the traditional Kirchweihen. The paper's local reporting extends into the northern Upper Palatinate communities bordering the district, such as Pyrbaum and Freystadt, which fall within the RHV's advertising and distribution reach.

Organization and Ownership

The Roth-Hilpoltsteiner Volkszeitung is published by Millizer und Riedel GmbH, based in Roth, in cooperation with the Verlag Nürnberger Presse Druckhaus Nürnberg GmbH & Co. KG — the publishing house of the Nürnberger Nachrichten. The NN publishing house is owned by the Schnell family (Bärbel Schnell and Sabine Schnell-Pleyer), and its editor-in-chief is Michael Husarek. The RHV's local newsroom in Roth, at Hilpoltsteiner Straße 57, is led by its editorial head — the drehscheibe journalist database names Patrick Shaw as Redaktionsleiter — and produces the paper's local pages, while the mantle pages are produced in Nuremberg.

The ownership structure is typical of the NN network's regional editions: local publishing companies with deep roots in their communities, tied into the Nuremberg publishing house for the national content and the printing and distribution infrastructure. The RHV is printed in the group's facilities and distributed across the Roth district six mornings a week. Advertising sales are handled within the group's structures, with the RHV's advertising reach reported in the group's price lists alongside the other regional editions — the 7,366 sold copies (IVW Q2/2025, combined with the Nordbayerische Zeitung) forming the basis of the paper's media data.

Digital Presence

The Roth-Hilpoltsteiner Volkszeitung is available as an e-paper, the digital replica of the printed edition that subscribers can read on tablets, smartphones and computers — a standard offering of the NN group that has become increasingly important as print circulation declines. The paper's online home is the nordbayern.de portal, the shared digital platform of the Nürnberger Nachrichten and its regional editions, where the RHV's local reporting appears alongside the group's regional and national content. The portal carries breaking news, photo galleries, videos and the e-paper editions, and it is one of the most visited regional news sites in northern Bavaria.

The digital strategy follows the group's approach: the local editions feed their reporting into the shared portal, while the portal's reach — far beyond the print circulation — gives the RHV's local journalism an audience across Franconia and beyond. Social media channels distribute the day's local stories, and the paper's journalists use the digital platforms for reader interaction, from comment functions to photo submissions. For a small district paper, the combination of the printed daily, the e-paper and the nordbayern.de portal provides a complete multi-channel presence: the print edition for the loyal subscriber base, the e-paper for readers who have moved to digital, and the portal for the wider regional audience.
