About Rumford Falls Times

Rumford Falls Times

Overview

The Rumford Falls Times is a weekly newspaper published in Rumford, Maine, serving Rumford and the River Valley region of western Maine in Oxford County. It is one of the Western Maine Weeklies published with the Sun Journal of Lewiston and now held in the Maine Trust for Local News. The Times is the newspaper of a paper mill town: Rumford grew from a settlement of about two hundred people into an industrial community after the falls of the Androscoggin River were developed for paper manufacture in the 1890s, and the Times' archive, catalogued by Newspapers.com as running from 1893 to the present with more than 101,000 pages, begins in the very year the first Rumford paper mill began operation. For more than a century and a quarter, as catalogued, the paper has recorded the town that the mill made.

History

Rumford's setting explains its newspaper. The town, originally called New Pennacook Plantation and incorporated in 1800, remained primarily agricultural for its first hundred years, with sawmills and gristmills using the water power of Pennacook Falls, where the Androscoggin River drops about 177 feet over granite. In 1882 the industrialist Hugh J. Chisholm recognized the falls' potential for paper manufacture. Through a local agent he purchased some 1,400 acres along both sides of the river above and below the falls, securing the waterpower rights, and the Rumford Falls Power Company was incorporated in 1890 to develop the site. Chisholm directed construction of the Portland and Rumford Falls Railway, completed in 1892, connecting Rumford to the national rail network, and the first paper mill began operation in 1893, drawing an infusion of people and money into the community. The Oxford Paper Company, owned by Chisholm, came to dominate Rumford's riverfront and economy.

The Times belongs to that founding moment. Newspapers.com catalogues the Rumford Falls Times archive from 1893, and the Rumford Commercial Historic District's National Register documentation cites Rumford Falls Times issues from 1890 to 1895 among the collections of the Rumford Historical Society, showing the paper active in the town's first industrial years. Its later corporate trace includes the incorporation of The Rumford Falls Times, Inc. in Maine on April 30, 1985. Through the twentieth century the paper chronicled a company town's life: mill employment and expansion, the growth of a commercial district on the island in the river, town government, schools, churches, sports, and the service of Rumford residents in wartime. During the Second World War, for example, the Times prepared a tentative list of Rumford men and women then serving in the armed forces, or honourably discharged, to assist in preparing an honour roll for Rumford, and asked readers to check the names and report omissions, a characteristic example of a weekly acting as its community's record keeper.

Production ties linked the Times to its neighbouring weeklies long before common ownership. In the 1960s the Norway operation of Robert C. Sallies, publisher of the Advertiser Democrat, became a central printing plant with the installation of a Goss Community offset press, and the papers it printed included the Bridgton News, the Rumford Falls Times, and the Berlin Reporter of New Hampshire. Western Maine's weeklies were thus already an interconnected printing family when ownership consolidation arrived.

The Howard James Era and Sale to the Sun Journal

The Times' best-documented modern proprietor was Howard James. James was a journalist of national standing: while Midwest bureau chief of the Christian Science Monitor he won a Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting in 1968 for the series published as Crisis in the Courts, and he wrote further books on delinquent youth and on children in America. He bought the Rumford Falls Times and the Norway Advertiser Democrat in 1976, after his Monitor career, having moved to the region earlier in the decade. The Maine State Library's writer profile records that James, a Maine resident from 1976, owned the Rumford Falls Times and the Norway Advertiser-Democrat until June 2005, when he sold those papers to the Lewiston Sun Journal to devote more time to writing books.

Editor and Publisher reported the sale as the two Oxford County weeklies joining the Sun Journal group in Lewiston. James decided to sell after his seventieth birthday, saying that the new owners would continue the mission of serving local communities. The two weeklies had a combined circulation of 10,500. The Sun Journal's publisher, James Costello Sr., said no immediate changes in staffing were anticipated, and the sale was handled for James by John Szefc of the newspaper brokerage W. B. Grimes and Company. Under Sun Journal ownership the Times took its modern place as a sister weekly to the Advertiser Democrat, the Bethel Citizen, and later the Franklin Journal and the other western Maine titles.

Coverage and Beats

The Times covers Rumford and the River Valley: the towns of Rumford and Mexico and the surrounding Oxford County communities whose lives centre on the Androscoggin River corridor. Town government, school district affairs, sports, public safety, business, and community events are its regular beats, with the paper mill, operated in modern times as the Rumford Mill and since 2018 owned by ND Paper, a subsidiary of Nine Dragons Paper, remaining the region's dominant employer and a perennial subject. The mill's history runs parallel to the paper's: established in its modern form in 1901 by Chisholm, passing through the Oxford Paper Company, Ethyl Corporation, Boise Cascade, Mead, NewPage, and Catalyst Paper before the Nine Dragons acquisition, and long known as a maker of book and coated papers and once the sole manufacturer of United States Post Office postcards. A weekly in such a town reports mill fortunes as community news, because they are.

The River Valley's geography shapes the rest of the coverage. Rumford is a gateway to the western Maine mountains, home to the Black Mountain of Maine ski area, and set amid the forests and rivers of Oxford County, so schools, winter sports, hunting and fishing, and the seasonal economy of the region sit alongside mill and municipal news. The paper's wartime honour roll project and its long record of town business show the two poles of its function: national events as they touched Rumford families, and the local business of the town week by week.

Editions and Format

The Rumford Falls Times is a weekly newspaper. Newspapers.com's archive records the title in two forms, Rumford Falls Times and the shortened Times, across its catalogued run from 1893 to the present, totalling 101,450 pages. In the Sun Journal era the Times has been published as part of the Lewiston group's western weeklies, with subscriptions managed collectively under the Western Maine Weeklies and its stories distributed through the Sun Journal's print and digital channels.

Ownership

After James's 2005 sale, the Times was owned with the Sun Journal. In 2017 the Sun Media Group was sold by the Costello family to Reade Brower, owner of MaineToday Media, and the Times entered the Masthead Maine portfolio. In August 2023 the National Trust for Local News completed its purchase of that portfolio and formed the Maine Trust for Local News, in which the Times is listed among the Western Maine Weeklies as the Rumford Falls Times of the River Valley, with the Advertiser Democrat of the Oxford Hills, the Bethel Citizen, the Franklin Journal of Franklin County, the Livermore Falls Advertiser, and the Rangeley Highlander. The sequence, local proprietor to Lewiston group to statewide portfolio to nonprofit trust, mirrors the ownership history of most of Maine's surviving weeklies.

Digital Presence

The Times' current stories appear through the Sun Journal's digital system. The Sun Journal Headlines application includes the Rumford Falls Times among the regional weekly publications whose stories it publishes, alongside the Advertiser Democrat, Bethel Citizen, Franklin Journal, Livermore Falls Advertiser, Penobscot Times, and Rangeley Highlander, with a Sun Journal subscription required for full content. Subscription services for the Times are likewise administered through the Sun Media western weeklies system. The historical paper is available on Newspapers.com, whose Rumford Falls Times archive covers the paper's long run and offers full-text searching of Rumford's history from the mill era onward.

Community Role

The Times' community role is inseparable from Rumford's identity as a mill town that a single industry created almost at once. The National Register documentation for the Rumford Commercial Historic District relies on the paper as a source for the town's 1890s development, and its collections are held by the Rumford Historical Society, institutional recognition that the Times is a primary source for the town's history. Its honour roll work in the 1940s, assembling the names of Rumford's service men and women with the public's help, shows the same relationship from inside the period: the paper was where Rumford kept its lists, settled its public business, and saw itself. As the River Valley's weekly within the Maine Trust portfolio, it continues that function for a community still defined by the falls, the mill, and the river.

Recognition

The Times' distinction is longevity in a demanding setting and an unusually distinguished proprietor. Its archive's 1893 starting point makes it contemporary with Rumford's industrial founding, a span few American company-town papers can match, and its ownership from 1976 to 2005 by a Pulitzer Prize-winning national reporter who chose to spend three decades publishing Oxford County weeklies is a notable chapter in Maine newspaper history, recorded by the Maine State Library. Its present listing among the Western Maine Weeklies of the Maine Trust for Local News places it in the recognized structure of Maine's surviving local press.
