About Russh
Russh
RUSSH is a quarterly independent Australian fashion magazine published in Sydney by RUSSH Media Pty Ltd. Established in 2004, it focuses on fashion, art and music, positioning itself as an independent alternative to mainstream fashion titles — "Australian at heart, but international in mindset." In 2018 StyleCaster listed it among the "21 International Fashion Magazines That Should Be on Your Radar," and in 2024 the publisher celebrated 20 years of independent publishing with the 300-page Legacy anniversary issue.
Overview
Russh occupies a distinctive position in Australian fashion media: a hybrid between a glossy international title like Vogue or Harper's Bazaar and an independent magazine. Its covers exclusively feature fashion models — past cover stars have included Cara Delevingne, Karlie Kloss, Alessandra Ambrosio, Julia Nobis, Catherine McNeil and Devon Aoki — and its editorial mix spans fashion editorials, art, music, beauty and culture. The publisher describes its reader not by age but by attitude: "someone who wants to be unique and read high-quality, creative journalism," fashion-savvy and drawn to originality and authenticity.
The magazine is published four times a year in print, supported by a substantial digital presence, and the publisher reports reaching more than 8 million people monthly across its channels.
History
Russh was launched in 2004 — industry reports date the launch to August 2004, with the first issue appearing in October 2004 — by founder Dr Ian Davies, who published it independently. It entered the market as a self-conscious alternative to the mainstream fashion magazines (Vogue) and women's lifestyle titles (Cleo, Cosmopolitan) of the day, alongside other independents such as Yen and Frankie that signalled a growing appetite for niche, forward-thinking fashion and lifestyle publishing.
The title grew quickly. AdNews reported in its early years that Russh had become one of Australia's fastest-growing fashion magazines, with a circulation of around 20,000 in Australia plus 5,000 overseas; Audit Bureau of Circulations figures cited in 2010 showed a 7 per cent rise to 24,905 in the six months to December. In October 2007 Russh launched a syndicated edition in Japan — Russh Japan — claiming to be the first Australian fashion title syndicated in an overseas market. The Japanese publishing house Selek went through months of meetings and mockups to absorb the Russh ethos, and Russh Australia retained sign-off on the Japanese editions' content and covers for the first six issues.
In 2010 custom publisher Switzer Media + Publishing acquired the Russh masthead from founder Ian Davies, setting up the venture Russh Media to house it; the six editorial staff continued on the title, led by editor Natalie Shukur. At the time the magazine was bi-monthly and aimed at 18-to-30-year-olds. The Switzer era brought stability and growth: by the title's tenth anniversary in 2014, editor-in-chief Jess Blanch told Mediaweek the focus was on growing Russh into a global brand, noting the reader had matured with the title — "when I first started with Russh it was very much a 16–35-year-old woman, but we're finding that reader has really matured."
The website launched in 2010, and the brand has since expanded its print portfolio: the annual RUSSH Beauty title, launched in 2024, redefines beauty in relatable terms, alongside the third edition of the annual RUSSH Home. The November 2024 Legacy issue — more than 300 pages, on sale from 14 November 2024 at newsstands and online — marked the culmination of a year-long 20th-anniversary celebration. "As we step into a new chapter, let this be our legacy: to stay comfortably on the edge, consistently moving forward, yet always ensuring no one is left behind," the publisher declared.
The Switzer era and the global ambition
The 2010 acquisition by Switzer Media + Publishing — a custom publisher moving into consumer magazines — gave Russh corporate backing while preserving its independence. Founder Ian Davies sold the masthead; Switzer set up the Russh Media venture to house it, and the title's six editorial staff continued under editor Natalie Shukur. At the time Russh was a bi-monthly aimed at 18-to-30-year-olds, with Audit Bureau of Circulations figures showing a 7 per cent circulation rise to 24,905.
By the tenth anniversary in 2014, editor-in-chief Jess Blanch was articulating a global ambition. "We do want to grow Russh into a global brand," she told Mediaweek. "We're Australian at heart, but international in mindset and that's been our USP for as long as I can remember. It's about staying true to ourselves as we build the title into a global brand." Blanch described the title's hybrid positioning — "between something like a Harper's Bazaar or a Vogue and an independent magazine, like Oyster" — and noted the reader had matured with the magazine: "when I first started with Russh it was very much a 16–35-year-old woman, but we're finding that reader has really matured. We don't pitch to an age or a demo, but someone who wants to be unique and read high-quality, creative journalism."
The publishing model
Russh's model is independence as a commercial strategy. The quarterly print magazine remains the flagship — the November 2024 Legacy issue ran to more than 300 pages — supported by the russh.com website (launched 2010), the annual RUSSH Beauty and RUSSH Home titles, e-commerce through shop.russh.com, and social and video channels. The publisher reports reaching more than 8 million people monthly across its channels: a striking multiple of the print circulation, and evidence of how an independent title can build a media business far larger than its newsstand sales.
The anniversary year's launches showed the model's direction. RUSSH Beauty, an annual print title introduced in 2024, "redefines beauty in relatable terms"; the third edition of the annual RUSSH Home extended the brand into interiors. Both are plays for the luxury advertising categories — beauty and home — that sustain premium print.
Content and Features
Each quarterly issue mixes high-fashion editorials with art, music, beauty and culture features, shot and written by Australian and international contributors. The covers are a signature: exclusively fashion models, from established supermodels to new faces, with Maddie Ziegler becoming the title's first digital cover star in 2022. The annual RUSSH Beauty and RUSSH Home titles extend the brand into dedicated beauty and interiors publishing.
Covers and the model tradition
The cover policy — fashion models only — is a statement of fashion seriousness. Where celebrity weeklies put stars on their covers, Russh has consistently chosen working models: Cara Delevingne and Karlie Kloss before they were household names, alongside Australian faces such as Julia Nobis and Catherine McNeil and international names from Alessandra Ambrosio to Devon Aoki. The digital cover, inaugurated with dancer and actor Maddie Ziegler in 2022, extended the tradition to the brand's online channels.
Coverage and Audience
Russh is distributed nationally through newsstands and online via shop.russh.com, with print and digital subscriptions available. The publisher reports a monthly cross-channel reach of more than 8 million people. Its audience is the fashion-engaged, culturally curious reader — predominantly women, but defined by the publisher less by demographics than by a desire for originality, authenticity and high-quality creative journalism.
Ownership
Russh is published by RUSSH Media Pty Ltd, the independent Sydney-based publisher set up by Switzer Media + Publishing to house the title after its acquisition from founder Ian Davies. The magazine is based in Sydney, New South Wales; Jess Blanch is identified as editor.
Digital Presence
The magazine's website, russh.com (launched in 2010), carries fashion, art, music and culture content between quarterly issues, and the brand maintains active social media channels. Digital covers — inaugurated with Maddie Ziegler in 2022 — extend the print cover tradition online, and the publisher's e-commerce and content channels contribute to its reported 8-million-plus monthly reach.
