About SaskToday

SaskToday

SaskToday is a Saskatchewan online news website covering the province's news, sports, and community life. Originally part of Glacier Media's network of community news sites, it was acquired by Harvard Media on March 15, 2024, as part of a wider partnership between the Regina-based broadcaster and the publisher. Alongside its sister site MooseJawToday, SaskToday represents a new model for Saskatchewan local news: digital-first community journalism backed by a regional broadcaster.

Overview

SaskToday publishes Saskatchewan news with a community focus: local government, education, health care, agriculture, sports (including the beloved Saskatchewan Roughriders), and the everyday stories of the province's cities and towns. The agriculture coverage is particularly central to the brand: in a province where farming is both an economic foundation and a cultural identity, SaskToday's reporting on crops, markets, weather, and rural policy serves an audience that lives the agricultural economy. The site serves a province where local news has been hollowed out by the same forces affecting the rest of Canada — newspaper closures, corporate consolidation, the collapse of advertising — and where digital outlets like SaskToday are filling the gaps left behind.

History

SaskToday was launched by Glacier Media's Prairie News Group to mark National Newspaper Week in October 2021 — a deliberate statement of intent at a time when local news was in retreat across Canada. The launch announcement framed the site as the culmination of months of planning, research, and labour: a website serving Saskatchewan with local, award-winning news reporting, drawing on the company's reinvigorated newsrooms across the province. Twelve newsrooms were connected digitally, with a collaborative goal of continuing what the announcement called the time-honoured institution of local news reporting.

The timing was significant. The launch statement observed that local news had always mattered, but never more than in an era when the world was becoming ever smaller — when local events and stories were impacted, even evoked, by global occurrences like the pandemic the province was still working through. SaskToday was Glacier's answer to the crisis in Saskatchewan local news: not a retreat, but a reinvestment — a digital platform that could carry the reporting of a dozen community newsrooms to readers across the province.

On March 14, 2024, Harvard Media — the Regina-based radio broadcasting and digital media company owned by The Hill Companies — announced the acquisition of SaskToday.ca and MooseJawToday.com from Glacier Media. The announcement described the properties as Saskatchewan's fastest-growing online news and sports sites, with SaskToday.ca as the flagship online community. The deal gave Harvard Media a presence in 13 additional Saskatchewan markets — including Weyburn, Estevan, The Battlefords, Humboldt, Assiniboia, Canora, Preeceville, Kamsack, Carlyle, Outlook, and Unity/Wilkie — as the associated online properties were included in the acquisition.

The announcement framed the deal as a fivefold expansion of Harvard's local news reach, explicitly contrasting Harvard's investment with an industry in retreat: while other media companies were reducing news, sports, agriculture, and local information, Harvard's SaskToday.ca and its other local properties would further enhance what the company called its already hyperlocal news presence. Harvard also entered into a long-term partnership with Glacier Media, a collaboration meant to leverage both organizations' strengths in content delivery, technological innovation, and advertising solutions.

"This acquisition and partnership reflect our belief in the power of local news and the importance of access to reliable information," said George Leith of Harvard Media — a statement of the philosophy driving the deal: that local journalism is not a declining asset to be managed, but a growing one to be invested in.

Content

SaskToday's content is organized around Saskatchewan life: provincial and municipal news, the Roughriders and local sports, agriculture and rural issues, education and health care, and community stories from across the province. The site's coverage reflects Saskatchewan's distinct character: a prairie province where agriculture, energy, and football loom large, where the distances are vast and the communities tight-knit, and where local news still matters in ways that urban Canadians sometimes forget.

Coverage and Audience

SaskToday covers Saskatchewan — a province of 1.2 million people spread across a vast geography, with Regina and Saskatoon as the urban anchors and hundreds of smaller communities in between. Through its network of associated properties, the site reaches readers in Weyburn, Estevan, The Battlefords, Humboldt, Assiniboia, Canora, Preeceville, Kamsack, Carlyle, Outlook, Unity, Wilkie, Moose Jaw, and beyond — a footprint covering most of the province's cities and many of its towns. Its audience is Saskatchewan residents: the farmers, teachers, nurses, tradespeople, and families who make up the province's population. The site's community focus means it covers the stories that matter locally — the school board decisions, the rink fundraisers, the harvest reports, the Roughriders — alongside the provincial politics that unite the province.

Ownership

SaskToday is owned by Harvard Media (formerly Harvard Broadcasting), the radio broadcasting and digital media company owned by The Hill Companies of Regina. Harvard entered broadcasting in 1977 when Michael Sifton sold CKCK-TV to Harvard Developments, and built its radio portfolio over the following decades: acquiring CKRM and what is now CHMX in 1981, and expanding to stations in Regina, Saskatoon, Yorkton, Calgary, Edmonton, Fort McMurray, and Red Deer. The company's stations operate under standardized brands including Cruz FM (mainstream rock), Play (rhythmic adult contemporary), and X (modern rock). Under Harvard ownership, CKRM acquired the radio rights to Saskatchewan Roughriders games in 1983 — a deal renewed through 2030 — making the station the voice of the province's beloved football team. The March 2024 acquisition of SaskToday and MooseJawToday from Glacier Media marked Harvard's expansion into digital news, part of a wider partnership with the publisher. In January 2026, the company further expanded its digital sports footprint by acquiring the Canadian Football League blog 3DownNation.

Place in Saskatchewan Media

SaskToday occupies a distinctive position in Saskatchewan's media landscape. The province's news ecosystem has long been dominated by a few large players — the Regina Leader-Post and Saskatoon StarPhoenix (both Postmedia), the CBC's provincial operations, and Harvard's own radio stations. The community weeklies that once served the smaller centres have been in long decline, many closed or consolidated. SaskToday's model — a digital platform aggregating the reporting of a dozen connected newsrooms, now backed by a Saskatchewan-rooted broadcaster — represents an attempt to rebuild community news for the digital age: not by resurrecting the weeklies, but by creating something new that serves the same function.

The Harvard Media acquisition is the key to this model's credibility. Where Glacier Media was a Vancouver-based company managing a national portfolio, Harvard is a Regina company — owned by The Hill Companies, rooted in the province for nearly fifty years, the voice of the Roughriders. For SaskToday's readers, the ownership change meant their local news site was now owned by neighbours rather than a distant corporation. In an era when Canadians have watched their local outlets sold to chains and stripped for parts, that local ownership is itself a journalistic statement.

Digital Presence

SaskToday publishes at sasktoday.ca, a digital-only news site designed for the province's readers. The site's digital presence is straightforward: the website itself, social media channels for distribution, and the cross-promotion opportunities that come with Harvard Media's radio stations. For Saskatchewan readers, SaskToday is part of the daily media diet — the local news site that covers their communities, backed by a broadcaster that has served the province for nearly fifty years.
