About Sat.1 Gold

Sat.1 Gold

Sat.1 Gold is a German free-to-air commercial television channel owned by ProSiebenSat.1 Media, broadcasting from Unterföhring near Munich. Launched on 17 January 2013, it targets women between forty-nine and sixty-five with a schedule drawn largely from the ProSiebenSat.1 archives: classic German series, documentaries, films, and magazine programmes. It is the sixth free-to-air channel of the ProSiebenSat.1 portfolio in Germany and the group's dedicated offering for mature female viewers.

Overview

Sat.1 Gold is ProSiebenSat.1's channel for women in their prime television years. While sixx serves young women and the flagship Sat.1 addresses the broad family audience, Sat.1 Gold focuses on women roughly between forty-nine and sixty-five — a large, loyal, and commercially significant audience that watches more television than almost any other demographic. Its schedule leans on familiarity: beloved German series from past decades, documentaries, films, and service magazines, much of it drawn from the group's extensive archives.

The channel broadcasts free-to-air nationwide and is financed by advertising. It operates from Unterföhring as part of the Seven. One Entertainment Group, sharing infrastructure, sales, and streaming distribution with its sister channels. Its programming strategy is deliberately comforting rather than challenging: recognisable favourites, gentle pacing, and the reassurance of programmes viewers already love.

Sat.1 Gold's launch in 2013 — alongside ProSieben Maxx for men later that year — completed ProSiebenSat.1's demographic segmentation of its free-to-air portfolio, giving the group dedicated channels for young women, mature women, and men.

History

Sat.1 Gold received its broadcast licence from the ZAK — the commission for licensing and supervision of Germany's media authorities — on 20 November 2012, and it is regulated by the Thuringian media authority (TLM). The channel started broadcasting on 17 January 2013 at 20:13 CET, opening with a two-minute countdown followed by a promo and a puppet show, then airing the German film The Whore (Die Hure) as its first feature presentation. The launch made it ProSiebenSat.1 Media's sixth free-to-air channel in Germany.

The channel's early schedule established its formula: German television productions from the ProSiebenSat.1 archives formed the backbone, supplemented by new magazine formats — including a spin-off of the consumer-advocacy magazine Akte and the documentary strand Süddeutsche TV Thema — and a daily midday magazine. Evening programming mixed documentaries, films, thrillers, and series.

Sports found an unexpected home on the channel: Sat.1 Gold broadcast tennis tournaments from the ATP, WTA, and ITF tours, and in April 2013 it launched ran tennis, a spin-off of the group's ran sports brand, bringing live tennis to a channel otherwise devoted to archive entertainment.

The channel grew steadily: in 2014 it generated a 0.7 percent market share among fourteen- to forty-nine-year-olds, rising to 1.2 percent in its core target group of women aged forty to sixty-four — doubling its launch-year share in that demographic, according to ProSiebenSat.1's annual reporting. The group's reports credited Sat.1 Gold, alongside sixx and ProSieben Maxx, with attracting dozens of new television advertising customers.

Programming and Content

Archive series are the heart of Sat.1 Gold. The channel broadcasts classic German television series from the ProSiebenSat.1 libraries — the Sat.1 and ProSieben hits of past decades — giving beloved programmes new runs before an audience that watched them first time around. This nostalgia programming is the channel's signature: familiar faces, familiar stories, and the comfort of rewatching.

Documentaries and reports fill large parts of the schedule: history, nature, society, and biography documentaries, many of them German productions, suit the channel's mature audience. Films — German television films, romantic dramas, and thrillers — anchor primetime and weekend slots.

Magazine and service programming addresses the target group's interests: the Akte spin-off's consumer advocacy, health and lifestyle magazines, and the daily midday magazine provide practical, service-oriented content. The channel's tennis coverage — ATP, WTA, and ITF tournaments through the ran tennis brand — adds live sport to the mix, a distinctive element among women's-interest channels.

Coverage and Audience

Sat.1 Gold broadcasts free-to-air throughout Germany via digital terrestrial television (DVB-T2), cable, and satellite, and its signal reaches Austria and Switzerland. Its programmes stream live and on demand through Joyn. Wikipedia lists sat1gold.de as the channel's official website.

The channel's audience is women roughly between forty-nine and sixty-five, a demographic that watches a great deal of television and that values the channel's familiar, comforting schedule. Within its target group, Sat.1 Gold has built a loyal following, with its archive series drawing viewers who seek out programmes they know and love. Detailed ratings are published by the industry's measurement bodies.

Sat.1 Gold's viewers are among the most loyal in German commercial television: the channel's concentrated offering of familiar favourites rewards habitual viewing, and its audience's engagement sustains long-running archive strands.

Ownership

Sat.1 Gold is owned by ProSiebenSat.1 Media SE and operated within the Seven. One Entertainment Group, the group's entertainment division headquartered in Unterföhring. Its sister channels include Sat.1, ProSieben, kabel eins, sixx, ProSieben Maxx, kabel eins Doku, and the pay-TV channels kabel eins classics, Sat.1 Emotions, and ProSieben Fun. The channel manager is Marc Rasmus.

ProSiebenSat.1 Media is majority-owned by MediaForEurope (75.61 percent of common shares) and listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. Within the group, Sat.1 Gold shares infrastructure, advertising sales (through Seven. One Media), and streaming distribution (through Joyn) with its sister channels.

As a commercial broadcaster, Sat.1 Gold is licensed by the ZAK and regulated by the Thuringian media authority, operating within Germany's dual broadcasting system.

Nostalgia Television and the Mature Audience

Sat.1 Gold's success rests on a programming insight: for mature viewers, familiarity is a feature, not a bug. The channel's archive series — the Sat.1 and ProSieben hits of the 1990s and 2000s — draw audiences who watched them first time around and welcome the chance to rewatch. In an era of infinite streaming choice, the curated comfort of a scheduled repeat offers something algorithms struggle to replicate: the pleasure of recognition without the burden of decision.

The mature female audience is television's most loyal demographic. Women over fifty watch more hours per day than almost any other group, keep the television on as a companion through the day, and respond to advertising in categories — health, household, travel, finance — that value their purchasing power. Sat.1 Gold's gentle pacing, familiar faces, and service-oriented magazines are calibrated precisely to these viewing habits: daytime magazine programming for the at-home audience, archive series in the afternoon, films and documentaries in the evening.

The channel's tennis coverage adds an unexpected dimension: live sport on a nostalgia channel. The ran tennis broadcasts — ATP, WTA, and ITF tournaments — bring event viewing to a schedule otherwise built on repeats, attracting sports-interested viewers who might not otherwise find the channel and giving regulars appointment programming amid the familiar. It is a reminder that even the most narrowly defined demographic channel benefits from occasional surprises.

Digital Presence

Sat.1 Gold's programmes stream live and on demand through Joyn, the ProSiebenSat.1 streaming platform, where its archive series, documentaries, and films reach on-demand audiences beyond the linear schedule. The channel's online presence is integrated into the group's digital offering, with programme information available through the group's web portals.

The channel maintains a presence on social media, engaging its mature female audience — a demographic increasingly active online — with programme highlights and nostalgic content from its archive series. Its tennis coverage extends the brand into sports streaming.

For German speakers abroad, Joyn's streaming offering makes much of Sat.1 Gold's programming available internationally, subject to rights restrictions. The channel's integration into the group's unified digital strategy positions its archive-rich offering for an audience that increasingly watches on demand.
