About Schenefelder Tageblatt

Schenefelder Tageblatt

The Schenefelder Tageblatt is the local newspaper for Schenefeld in the Pinneberg district of Schleswig-Holstein, published by the A. Beig publishing house of Pinneberg. Founded in 1972 — in the year Schenefeld was granted town rights — the paper long appeared as a printed daily; on 1 July 2023 the printed edition was discontinued, and since then the Schenefeld local section has been published digitally only. As part of the medien holding:nord group (NOZ Medien), the paper's journalism continues online and in the e-paper, serving the town on Hamburg's north-western border.

Overview

The Schenefelder Tageblatt serves Schenefeld, the town of around 30,000 inhabitants in the Pinneberg district directly on Hamburg's north-western city border — a classic Hamburg commuter town (Speckgürtel) whose residents largely work in the Hanseatic city. The paper was founded in 1972 to coincide with Schenefeld's elevation to town status on 1 July of that year, and it appeared for five decades as the town's printed daily newspaper, published by the A. Beig Druckerei und Verlag GmbH & Co. KG of Pinneberg.

On 1 July 2023 — exactly 51 years after its founding — the printed edition was discontinued. Since then, the Schenefelder Lokalteil has been published digitally only: the paper's journalism continues on the shz.de portal, in the e-paper and in the group's news apps, while the printed daily no longer appears. All subscribers were offered the chance to test the electronic newspaper free of charge and without obligation, including the provision of a suitable reading device. The paper thus completed the transition that many small German local papers are undergoing: from the printed daily to the digital-only local edition.

The paper belongs to the A. Beig publishing house's family of Pinneberg district newspapers — the Pinneberger Tageblatt, the Quickborner Tageblatt, the Wedel-Schulauer Tageblatt, the Barmstedter Zeitung, the Elmshorner Nachrichten and the Uetersener Nachrichten — all published by A. Beig and, since January 2008, wholly owned subsidiaries of the medien holding:nord GmbH of Flensburg, which belongs to the NOZ media group of Osnabrück. The papers' editors-in-chief are Gerrit Bastian Mathiesen and Jan Frederik Schönstedt; the publishers are Werner F. Ebke and Jan Dirk Elstermann.

History

The Schenefelder Tageblatt was founded in 1972 by Andreas Beig — the son of Carl Andreas Beig, who had built the A. Beig publishing house in Pinneberg — as the local newspaper for the newly elevated town of Schenefeld. Andreas Beig had already founded the Wedel-Schulauer Tageblatt in 1957 and the Quickborner Tageblatt in 1965; the Schenefelder Tageblatt completed his ring of local papers around the Pinneberg district. The founding reflected the district's post-war growth: the Hamburg commuter belt was booming, and each of the district's towns received its own daily newspaper.

After Andreas Beig's death in 1980, his son Dieter Beig took over the management, until he sold the media house in 1993 to the Schleswig-Holsteinische Zeitungsverlag sh:z of Flensburg (55 percent), the Kieler Nachrichten (24 percent) and the Axel Springer Verlag (21 percent). Since January 2008 the A. Beig publishing house — like the sh:z and the Schwerin newspaper publisher — has been a wholly owned subsidiary of the medien holding:nord GmbH of Flensburg, which belongs to the NOZ media group. In 2016 NOZ Medien's takeover of medien holding:nord was approved by the Federal Cartel Office, integrating the Pinneberg papers into one of Germany's large regional media groups.

The paper embraced digital early: the e-paper edition was introduced in December 2009, and the iPhone/iPad app followed in December 2012. But the economics of the small printed daily — the drehscheibe journalist database recorded a circulation of 7,659 — could not be sustained: on 1 July 2023 the printed edition was discontinued, and the Schenefelder Tageblatt became a digital-only local edition. The transition was managed as a complete digital offer: subscribers received free trial access and reading devices, and the paper's journalism continued without interruption on the digital platforms.

Coverage and Content

The Schenefelder Tageblatt's local pages cover Schenefeld and its immediate surroundings: the town council, the local administration, the schools, the churches, the police reports, the volunteer fire brigade, and the dense network of clubs and associations — from sports clubs to the cultural societies of the commuter town. The paper's reporting beats reflect Schenefeld's character as a Hamburg Speckgürtel town: suburban development and housing construction, transport links to Hamburg — the S-Bahn, the bus connections, the road network — the commuter experience, and the town's efforts to maintain its own identity against the pull of the metropolis.

The paper's journalism follows the classic agenda of the German local daily in digital form: town council decisions, planning and construction projects, school news, club announcements, sports results and the family notices that make the local paper the chronicle of the town's social life. The digital format allows for continuous updating: breaking local news appears on the shz.de portal as it happens, while the e-paper preserves the complete daily edition — every council report, every club announcement — in digital form for readers who value the finished newspaper.

Organization and Ownership

The Schenefelder Tageblatt is published by the A. Beig Druckerei und Verlag GmbH & Co. KG of Pinneberg (Damm 9–19, 25421 Pinneberg), as one of the publishing house's Pinneberg district newspapers. The A. Beig publishing house has been, since January 2008, a wholly owned subsidiary of the medien holding:nord GmbH of Flensburg, which belongs to the NOZ media group of Osnabrück — one of Germany's large regional media groups, whose titles include the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung and the sh:z group's 22 daily newspapers in Schleswig-Holstein.

The papers' editors-in-chief are Gerrit Bastian Mathiesen and Jan Frederik Schönstedt, who are responsible for all the media house's products — the Pinneberger Tageblatt, the Quickborner Tageblatt, the Wedel-Schulauer Tageblatt, the Barmstedter Zeitung, the Elmshorner Nachrichten, the Uetersener Nachrichten and the digital media. The publishers are Werner F. Ebke and the publisher Jan Dirk Elstermann; the managing directors are Stefan Berthold and Jens Masur. The Schenefelder Tageblatt's local editorial team works within this organization, producing the digital local section for Schenefeld.

Digital Presence

The Schenefelder Tageblatt's digital presence is its presence: since 1 July 2023 the paper has been a digital-only publication, and its journalism lives on the shz.de portal — the shared digital platform of the Schleswig-Holsteinische Zeitungsverlag's newspapers, one of the most visited regional news sites in northern Germany — in the e-paper editions and in the group's news apps. The e-paper, introduced in December 2009, preserves the complete daily edition in digital form; the app, available since December 2012, brings the paper to smartphones and tablets.

The digital transition was managed as a full-service offer: all print subscribers were invited to test the electronic newspaper free of charge and without obligation, with reading devices provided — the publishing house's recognition that the digital-only future required bringing the loyal print readership along. The shz.de portal carries the Schenefeld local section's reporting alongside the journalism of the group's 22 Schleswig-Holstein dailies and the Pinneberg papers, with breaking news, photo galleries, videos and interactive features. Social media channels distribute the day's local stories.

The A. Beig publishing house also publishes the tip — Tageblatt am Sonntag, the Sunday advertising paper distributed free to more than 120,000 households in the Pinneberg district — the print complement to the digital dailies' household reach. For the Schenefelder Tageblatt, the digital-only model is the answer to the economics of the small local paper: the journalism continues — the council reports, the club news, the community chronicle — while the printing press, after 51 years, has fallen silent.
