About SegmentFault

SegmentFault

SegmentFault, known in Chinese as Sifu, is a developer community and technology publishing platform based in Hangzhou, Zhejiang. Founded in 2012, it built its identity around a programmer-centred question-and-answer community in Chinese, later expanding into technical articles, columns, events and industry research. Its name is a programmer's joke: a segmentation fault is the error produced when a program tries to access memory it cannot address. In its own tenth-anniversary reflections in 2022, the company described its founding mission as allowing developers to communicate better in Chinese and eliminating knowledge inequality in the development world. In 2022 SegmentFault joined ONES, the Chinese research-and-development management software company, beginning a new chapter for one of China's best-known independent developer communities.

Founding and the hackathon origin story

SegmentFault's own anniversary account traces its origin to China's first hackathon, held in Beijing, where founders Gao Yang and Dong Feng took part and saw, for the first time, the enormous energy contained within China's developer community. Developer-centred activity was new in China at the time, and the experience shaped their subsequent entrepreneurial decisions. Talking about the future of Chinese developers in a rented house in Beijing, they decided to build something for that community. Question-and-answer communities were then in the ascendant — Zhihu and other Chinese Q&A services were rising — and the founders recognised the form as a good structure for knowledge that encouraged participants to keep producing high-quality content. Through repeated collisions of ideas, the name SegmentFault and the prototype of the product were born. Company profiles date the founding to 2012 and place the company in Hangzhou, the Zhejiang capital that is also home to Alibaba and a large share of China's e-commerce and cloud workforce.

An earlier preview: the coder-centric Q&A service

SegmentFault attracted attention from China's technology press very early. TechNode, writing in December 2011 about the service as it was being prepared, described it as a coder-centric Q&A service with a deliberately different approach from general social Q&A sites: while Zhihu and similar services targeted ordinary people and general questions, SegmentFault addressed programmers and geeks. The site was inspired and motivated by Stack Overflow, the English-language question-and-answer community that had become essential infrastructure for programmers worldwide. TechNode noted that the founding team included former staff of Yahoo, Taobao and Renren, and that before SegmentFault they had developed Typecho, an open-source blog system written in PHP — a credential that signalled the team's roots in China's open-source and blogging culture. The choice of name drew comment even then: "segmentfault" names the memory-access error every systems programmer learns to dread, an in-joke that immediately identified the site's intended audience.

Building a Chinese-language developer community

The community SegmentFault built combined questions and answers with articles, columns and discussion, all in Chinese. That language choice was strategic and, in the founders' framing, almost moral in purpose: the community was built to eliminate knowledge inequality in the development world by gathering the wisdom of developers together. English dominates global programming resources, and Chinese developers who were not fluent readers of English were structurally disadvantaged; a high-quality Chinese-language community narrowed that gap. Qi Ning, writing for the tenth anniversary in May 2022, reiterated the founding line he had written a decade earlier — the first line of code for SegmentFault started with the simple idea of allowing developers to communicate better in Chinese — and described the goal of gathering developers' wisdom and building a strong community. A decade on, the company could say that SegmentFault had become an important force in the Chinese developer community, with community partners and thousands of developers contributing.

Content, reputation and the TopWriter system

SegmentFault's content engine depends on practitioner-authors, and the platform developed formal mechanisms to recognise them. Its annual China Technology Pioneer selections included a TopWriter list for individual and enterprise technical teams, generated from a community contribution algorithm rather than by application. According to the platform's description, the list drew on comprehensive analysis of community user behaviour data — numbers of articles and Q&A posts, reputation and likes — across contribution and influence dimensions. The people so recognised, the platform says, preach the future of technology and benefit many other developers. A parallel institution was the annual selection of Chinese open-source pioneers: the 2021 selection, jointly launched with the professional open-source alliance Kaiyuanshe, the Open Source Society, named thirty-three pioneers, defining pioneers broadly to include not only developers who contribute code but also sponsors of open-source projects, evangelists, pioneers in open-source governance and investors concerned with open source. The annual China Open Source Report, hosted by Kaiyuanshe figures, provided data support for the selection.

Events and the developer ecosystem

SegmentFault extended its community into physical events. In June 2021 it organised the first China Developer Ecological Summit in Beijing, described as the first communication platform of its kind in the country, focused on how technology companies build developer ecosystems. Co-founder and chief executive Gao Yang discussed open governance of the open-source community and community building with participants from open-source and enterprise backgrounds, and the summit released survey research on the state of China's developer eco-marketers and launched SegmentFault strategic products. Five sub-forums covered developer activities, developer operations and growth, developer community building and open-source operations, with developer-ecosystem heads from Alibaba Cloud, Microsoft, Google, NetEase, Huawei and JD sharing practice. The event illustrates how SegmentFault's role evolved: from hosting developers' questions to convening the industry conversation about developers themselves — how companies recruit, support and retain the programmers on whom their platforms depend.

Industry voice and partners

By its tenth anniversary, SegmentFault's position was acknowledged across China's technology industry. Messages marking the anniversary came from figures including Li Yuexuan of JetBrains Greater China, Wang Qing of JFrog China, and Wu Sheng, the first Chinese director of the Apache Software Foundation and founder of Apache SkyWalking, who thanked SegmentFault for its efforts for open source in China and described it as having built an open and professional technology and content platform for open source and developers. The Beijing Zhiyuan Artificial Intelligence Research Institute also sent congratulations. Such endorsements from toolmakers, foundations and research institutes reflect the platform's bridging position between individual developers and the organisations — domestic and international — that serve them. SegmentFault described itself in this period as a leading new-generation developer community in China, relying on analysis of millions of developers' user data for its selections and reports.

Joining ONES in 2022

In 2022, its tenth-anniversary year, SegmentFault joined ONES, the Shenzhen-based maker of research-and-development management software used by large software teams. The announcement was made through the community itself, and Qi Ning's anniversary letter framed the move as more than a simple business activity, inviting developers to let knowledge flow and build a more open, inclusive and progressive community together with the new partner. The fit was logical: ONES sells project and development management tools to software teams — Feng Bin, its co-founder and chief technology officer, had spoken at InfoQ China's QCon Beijing in 2021 on digital project management practices of large software teams — while SegmentFault commanded the attention and trust of the developers who use such tools. For an independent community founded in a rented house conversation, joining a substantial software company offered resources and stability; the anniversary messaging emphasised continuity of mission rather than change of identity.

Hangzhou and the geography of Chinese development

SegmentFault's Hangzhou base matters to its story. Hangzhou is one of China's principal technology cities, home to Alibaba and a dense population of e-commerce, cloud and enterprise-software engineers — exactly the professional readership a developer community needs. Company profiles consistently record Hangzhou as the company's home and 2012 as its founding year. Operating from Hangzhou rather than Beijing also distinguished SegmentFault within a developer-media landscape whose best-known institutions, from OSChina in Shenzhen to InfoQ China in Beijing, are scattered across China's technology map. That geography mirrors the distribution of China's software workforce itself, which is spread across Beijing, Shenzhen, Shanghai, Hangzhou and other hubs rather than concentrated in a single Silicon Valley equivalent — a distribution SegmentFault's national online community was designed to serve.

What SegmentFault publishes

The platform's publishing combines several genres. Questions and answers remain the core utility: a developer with a concrete problem searches, finds a thread, and often finds a solution contributed by another practitioner. Articles and columns allow longer technical writing, from tutorials to architecture retrospectives. News and announcements cover the technology industry that employs the community. Events, selections and reports — the Technology Pioneer lists, the Open Source Pioneer selections, the developer-ecosystem summit and survey reports — give the platform an editorial voice of its own, interpreting the developer profession to itself and to the companies that depend on it. Together these genres make SegmentFault simultaneously a reference work, a professional network and a trade publication for Chinese software development, which is why it is categorised in this directory as an online news and media outlet as well as a community.

Significance

SegmentFault matters because it demonstrated, at scale, that a Chinese-language, programmer-first community could sustain itself for a decade and shape its industry. Founded in 2012 from a hackathon-inspired conviction that Chinese developers needed a home of their own, it grew into a platform whose selections, summits and reports are reference points for China's developer ecosystem, and whose tenth anniversary drew congratulations from international toolmakers and the Apache Software Foundation's Chinese leadership. Its absorption into ONES in 2022 closed its independent chapter but not its story: the community it built — its questions answered, articles written and reputations earned — remains part of the working infrastructure of Chinese software development, and its founding idea, that developers should be able to communicate and learn in Chinese, has been thoroughly vindicated.
