Shanghai Securities News, officially titled Shanghai Securities Journal, is a national securities daily newspaper headquartered in Shanghai, China. Launched on 1 July 1991 as an internal publication and openly issued in China and abroad from 1 January 1993, it is one of the foundational newspapers of China's modern capital markets. Sponsored by Xinhua News Agency, the state news agency, it is described in its directory profile as the first national financial daily in New China to provide authoritative financial and securities information, and as a legally designated securities information disclosure medium. That designated status is its defining feature: listed companies publish their official announcements, reports and disclosures in its pages, which makes the newspaper part of the formal infrastructure of China's stock markets as well as a news organisation. Its official website is cnstock.com.
The newspaper's Chinese name is Shanghai Zhengquan Bao. In English it appears under several closely related renderings: Shanghai Securities News is the official title used by the paper itself, including on its electronic edition, while Shanghai Securities Journal is the translation most common in reference works, and Shanghai Securities Post is also encountered. It is commonly abbreviated to SSJ. The paper is a state-owned national daily, headquartered in Shanghai, and its catalogue record carries the OCLC number 47623086. Unlike a metropolitan newspaper, its subject is a single sector — securities and finance — but its readership is national, because its disclosure function applies to listed companies and investors across China. International news organisations routinely cite it by name when reporting Chinese regulatory and market developments; a Reuters market report, for example, carried the headline format “China regulator tightens overseas insurance product sales scrutiny: Shanghai Securities News,” illustrating how the paper functions as an attributed source for financial policy news well beyond China.
Shanghai Securities News was launched on 1 July 1991, initially for internal circulation. From 1 January 1993 it was openly issued in China and abroad. That two-stage beginning reflects the conditions in which China's securities press was created: the country's modern stock markets were themselves brand new at the start of the 1990s, and a specialised press had to be built alongside the exchanges, the listed companies and the investor base. The newspaper grew with that system. Its launch is recorded in the standard histories and yearbooks of the Shanghai market, including the China Securities Industry Yearbook and the Shanghai Securities Yearbook, which document the paper as part of the market's institutional development. By launching in 1991, Shanghai Securities News predates almost all of China's other major securities titles and belongs to the first generation of financial journalism in the People's Republic's market era.
The newspaper is sponsored by Xinhua News Agency. Xinhua is China's state news agency, and its sponsorship places Shanghai Securities News within the same media family as other Xinhua-hosted financial and general titles, such as the Xinhua Daily Telegraph, the national daily launched on 1 January 1993, and the Economic Information Daily, the economics newspaper sponsored by Xinhua that was inaugurated on 1 July 1981. Sponsorship by the national agency underlines the paper's official character. It is not a commercial market tabloid chasing securities gossip; it is an authorised channel through which market information of record is published. That official standing explains both its designated disclosure role and the weight that regulators, exchanges, listed companies and other media give to its reporting on policy and supervision.
The most important fact about Shanghai Securities News is its legal function. Chinese listed companies are required to publish announcements and periodic reports through designated media, and Shanghai Securities News is one of the small group of newspapers holding that designated status. Its directory profile describes it as both the first national financial daily in New China to provide authoritative financial and securities information and a legally designated securities information disclosure medium. The practical reality of that status is visible in listed-company documents across the market. Company articles of association designate at least one newspaper from the group comprising Securities Times, China Securities Journal, Shanghai Securities News and Securities Daily as the newspaper for publishing company announcements. Interim and annual reports list Shanghai Securities News by name as a newspaper designated for information disclosure: Shandong Gold Mining, for example, lists China Securities Journal, Shanghai Securities News, Securities Times and Securities Daily together in its 2026 interim report, and numerous other issuers name Shanghai Securities News alone or in combination. For investors, this means the paper is not simply reporting on companies; it is one of the official places where companies speak.
Shanghai Securities News is consistently grouped with three other titles as one of China's four major securities newspapers: China Securities Journal, Securities Times and Securities Daily. The comparison is instructive. China Securities Journal, also published by Xinhua News Agency, is based in Beijing with offices in Shanghai and Shenzhen; it was published on a trial basis in October 1992 and officially launched on 3 January 1993, and it is designated by China's securities, banking and insurance regulators to disclose information on listed companies, insurance companies and trust companies. Securities Times is headquartered in Shenzhen, is supervised and organised by People's Daily Press, was launched on 27 November 1993, and likewise holds designated status. Shanghai Securities News, launched in 1991 and openly published from the start of 1993, is therefore the earliest-founded of this core group. Together, the four papers formed the print backbone of China's securities disclosure system, combining news reporting with the publication of the announcements on which trading decisions depend.
Alongside its announcement pages, Shanghai Securities News is a working financial newsroom covering markets, companies, funds, bonds and financial regulation. Its reporting is frequently the channel through which regulatory developments become public, which is why wire services cite it as a source on securities supervision. The Shanghai Stock Exchange itself republishes material translated from the newspaper: an exchange news release presenting revised STAR Market listing rules, for instance, is explicitly headed as translated from Shanghai Securities News and credited to its website, cnstock.com, and its named reporter. That relationship — exchange, regulator and newspaper exchanging information in public — is characteristic of the paper's position. Its journalism is read by market professionals who need to know not only what has happened in trading, but what the institutions governing the market have decided, proposed or clarified.
The newspaper's official website is cnstock.com, and it publishes an electronic edition of the paper, the Shanghai Securities News Electronic Edition, alongside continuous online financial news. The digital operation carries the print title's two functions onto the web: market reporting and the publication and archiving of listed-company disclosure material. In a market where announcements move prices, a searchable, continuously updated official channel is essential, and cnstock.com serves as the newspaper's public interface for announcements, news and data-oriented financial content. The print and digital titles remain one operation: reports originating with the newspaper are credited jointly to Shanghai Securities News and cnstock.com, as in the Shanghai Stock Exchange's republication practice noted above. For researchers, the electronic edition is also the practical way to consult the newspaper of record, since the disclosures that give the title its importance are published and preserved there.
In March 2018, Shanghai Securities News won a place in the Third National Top 100 Publications in China, the national recommended list of leading newspapers and periodicals reported by People's Daily and Xinhua. The award placed the specialist securities daily in the same national honours cohort as leading general titles; Nanfang Daily and Jiefang Daily were among the other newspapers recognised in the same third round of the list. For a sector newspaper, inclusion in a national top-100 publications list is significant recognition: it reflects not circulation alone but the paper's institutional standing within China's press system, built on its disclosure mandate and its three decades of publication since 1991.
Shanghai Securities News belongs to the first rank of China's financial newspapers, but its character differs from the country's better-known commercial business dailies. Titles such as China Business News, National Business Daily and 21st Century Business Herald compete on reporting, analysis and readership; Shanghai Securities News does that too, but it additionally carries a statutory function none of the purely commercial titles holds. Its nearest peers are the other designated securities papers, China Securities Journal and Securities Times, with which it shares the disclosure role. Its Shanghai base is also significant: the newspaper is headquartered in the city that hosts the Shanghai Stock Exchange and that China has developed as its principal financial centre, and its name ties the national securities system to that city. Financial newspaper market research of the early 2010s treated the specialist securities press as a distinct, nationally distributed segment serving a high-end professional readership, and Shanghai Securities News is one of the segment's defining titles.
More than three decades after its internal launch on 1 July 1991, Shanghai Securities News remains a national securities daily of record. It is headquartered in Shanghai, sponsored by Xinhua News Agency, published in print and through cnstock.com and its electronic edition, and recognised in the 2018 National Top 100 Publications list. Its enduring importance can be summarised in the two roles it has held since open publication began on 1 January 1993: it reports the Chinese securities market, and it is one of the legally designated places where that market officially discloses its information. Any study of how China's capital markets communicate — with investors, with regulators and with each other — runs through its pages.
