About SimpliCity

SimpliCity: Coimbatore's Real-Time Hyperlocal News Platform

SimpliCity — styled 'SimpliCity' and found at simplicity.in and simpli-city.in — is a bilingual, real-time hyperlocal news platform for Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, which describes itself as the city's largest and most trusted real-time hyperlocal news platform. It publishes city news, events, sports, government notifications and jobs, together with traffic and water-status updates, a free job portal and exclusive feature videos about places to eat, people to celebrate and talents to watch.

Founded by journalist D. Andrew Sam Raja Pandian, SimpliCity became nationally known in April 2020, when its founder was arrested over its COVID-19 lockdown reporting — a case taken up by the International Federation of Journalists, the International Press Institute and The Caravan. That episode fixed the platform's identity in the public record: a small city newsroom whose ground reporting on hunger, ration shops and hospital hostels during the lockdown drew the full weight of the local administration, and whose defence became a press-freedom cause.

Overview

SimpliCity's founding vision, as the platform states it, borrows a line from the Tamil Sangam-era collection Purananuru by the poet Kaniyan Poongundranar — the celebrated sentiment that every city is our own and all its people are our kin. The platform reads that two-thousand-year-old democratic idea as a brief for modern hyperlocal media: to make a city truly one's own, residents need to know what is happening in it in depth and instantaneously, from a technology platform supplying authenticated, trustworthy news in real time.

In practice that means a service bundle unusual for a news site: reporting by a professional journalist team, the city's largest events platform, traffic updates, water-supply status, government notifications, a free jobs portal and video features. Its office is listed in RS Puram, Coimbatore — on the second floor of the Sasha Building on East Venkataswamy Road — in the heart of the city it covers.

History and Founding

SimpliCity was founded by D. Andrew Sam Raja Pandian, who serves as its founder and chief executive officer; court reporting in 2020 described him as the publisher of the digital magazine 'SIMPLI-CITY' in Coimbatore, then aged thirty-nine. The platform grew as a mobile- and web-first operation, publishing in English and Tamil, and by the late 2010s its events listings and city coverage were established parts of Coimbatore's online life — its archived events pages show a dense calendar of workshops, exhibitions, college fests and food festivals across the city in 2018 alone.

Unlike a digitised newspaper, SimpliCity was born digital, and its history is best read through its product: first the news feed, then the civic utilities — traffic, water, notifications, jobs, events — that turn a news audience into a daily city habit. The 2020 arrest, covered in the sections below, is the most documented event in its history and the moment the platform's name entered national journalism debates.

Ownership and Business Model

SimpliCity is an independent, founder-led platform: Andrew Sam Raja Pandian is consistently identified across court, press-freedom and news sources as its founder and chief executive, and no parent media group or external owner appears in the record. Its publishing operation sits at its RS Puram address in Coimbatore.

Its business model follows from its product mix. A hyperlocal platform that runs the city's events calendar, a jobs portal and civic updates alongside news offers local advertisers — colleges, retailers, restaurants, event organisers — targeted access to a Coimbatore audience that national platforms cannot segment as finely. Listings classify the business among media and advertising services in Coimbatore, consistent with an advertising-supported local media model, though the company publishes no financial figures.

Language and Regional Focus

SimpliCity is a bilingual news portal, publishing in English and Tamil — a necessity in Coimbatore, where civic life runs in Tamil but education, business and administration also run heavily in English. The International Federation of Journalists explicitly describes it as a bi-lingual news portal in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.

Its regional focus is deliberately narrow and deep: one city, covered street by street. Where state portals spread reporters across Tamil Nadu, SimpliCity's promise is Coimbatore granularity — its neighbourhoods, its municipal corporation, its medical college hospital, its ration shops, its water supply. The choice of the Purananuru line as a founding motto extends the idea in principle — every city our own — but the platform's realised work is Coimbatore first and, in practice, Coimbatore only.

Coverage and Content

News coverage centres on Coimbatore civic affairs: municipal governance, public distribution, health services, education and the everyday administration that touches residents' lives. Its events platform lists upcoming events, workshops and competitions across the city; its services carry government notifications, job listings, traffic and water updates; and its video features profile food places, notable residents and emerging local talent.

The reporting that defined its reputation was published in April 2020, during India's COVID-19 lockdown. One story reported undergraduate and postgraduate student doctors at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital hostel alleging they received no timely and adequate food after the hospital canteen closed. Another reported public complaints of looting and corruption at ration shops, including claims that the government's one-thousand-rupee lockdown grant for labour welfare card holders was being swindled. Both stories grew from named local grievances — a letter from the student doctors to the dean, petitions to the Collector about ration quantities — and both were classic hyperlocal accountability reporting.

Audience and Reach

SimpliCity addresses Coimbatore residents directly: commuters checking traffic, households checking water status, job-seekers using its free portal, families browsing its events calendar, and readers following city news in Tamil or English. Its self-description as the city's largest and most trusted real-time hyperlocal platform is the platform's own claim, but its public-review footprint in Coimbatore business listings and the intensity of the public response to its founder's arrest — local journalists protesting, a public petition demanding his release — indicate a readership that regarded the platform as its own city institution.

Its reach beyond Coimbatore is of a different kind: through the press-freedom record. IFJ, IPI and Caravan coverage carried the SimpliCity name to journalism audiences worldwide in 2020, an international visibility no comparably sized Indian city portal had sought but which permanently documents the platform in the global record of pandemic-era press cases.

Digital Presence

SimpliCity is digital-only: website, mobile web and social distribution, with no print edition. Its site architecture reflects its service model — sections for news, events, jobs and city utilities rather than only the politics-sports-entertainment grid of a conventional portal — and it maintains an active social presence through which stories such as the medical students' food complaint were amplified, including on Twitter, where official responses from the state health administration were publicly recorded at the time.

The platform's digital trail is also preserved in legal and advocacy records online: the Madras High Court quash petition filed for its founder in May 2020, reported in legal journalism, identifies the petitioner expressly as founder and chief executive officer of 'SimpliCity.com', a local-news website, of Ramanathapuram, Coimbatore — an unusual documentary footprint for a hyperlocal outlet, created by the case itself.

Notable People

The central figure is D. Andrew Sam Raja Pandian, founder and chief executive officer. A Coimbatore journalist, he reported and published the lockdown stories himself and bore the legal consequences personally. Two colleagues complete the documented newsroom picture from April 2020: reporter Jerald Aruldass and photographer M Balaji, who reported the stories on the ground and were detained and questioned by Coimbatore police for more than seven hours on 22 April 2020 before being released on an undertaking to return for inquiry.

On the other side of the case, the complainant was M Sundararajan, an assistant commissioner of the Coimbatore municipal corporation, whose complaint accused the portal's reporting of undermining the Tamil Nadu government's pandemic management. The named cast of the episode is unusually well documented for a small outlet because press-freedom organisations recorded it in detail at the time.

The 2020 Arrest and Press-Freedom Case

On the night of 23 April 2020, Coimbatore police arrested Andrew Sam Raja Pandian. He was charged under Section 3 of the Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897, and under Sections 188 and 505(1) of the Indian Penal Code, produced before a magistrate that night and remanded to the Avinashi sub-jail; contemporary reports note it was the first invocation of the Epidemic Diseases Act against a journalist in Tamil Nadu during the outbreak. The charges rested on the two lockdown stories — the medical hostel food report and the ration-shop corruption report.

The response was immediate. Coimbatore journalists staged a silent protest on 24 April demanding his release; a public petition sought the release of 'Andrew Sam, Founder, SimpliCity'; and the IFJ with the Indian Journalists Union and the National Union of Journalists (India) condemned the arrest and called for his immediate release, as did the International Press Institute. He was subsequently released on bail, and in May 2020 a petition to quash the FIR was filed in the Madras High Court, arguing that press publication was protected and the case politically motivated; the court recorded that further proceedings would be subject to that petition. Whatever the case's later course, it stands as the defining documented episode in SimpliCity's history — the moment a hyperlocal Coimbatore platform became a reference point in India's pandemic press-freedom debate.

Recent Developments

SimpliCity continues to operate as Coimbatore's hyperlocal platform from RS Puram, publishing city news, events, notifications and jobs under its founding promise of real-time, authenticated city information. Its listings remain active in Coimbatore media directories, and its model — news plus civic utilities in two languages — remains the template ambitious Indian hyperlocal start-ups describe.

Its lasting significance in the WorldNM directory is the completeness of its public record relative to its size: a stated founding philosophy drawn from classical Tamil poetry, a clearly identified founder, a defined service model, and a nationally reported confrontation with authority in 2020 that tested, in public, whether a small city portal's reporting on food and ration shops deserved protection. On the evidence of the solidarity it drew, the profession answered that it did.
