About Sky News Arabia

Sky News Arabia is a 24-hour Arabic-language news channel broadcasting from Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, serving audiences across the Middle East and North Africa. Launched on 6 May 2012, it is a joint venture between the Abu Dhabi Media Investment Corporation (ADMIC) and the UK-based Sky Group, and it carries the Sky News brand into the Arabic-speaking world. Broadcasting free-to-air to more than 50 million homes, with a network of bureaux across the region and offices in London and Washington DC, it combines rolling news with business, sport and entertainment coverage, and it is available in the United Kingdom on Sky channel 788.

Conception and the joint venture

Sky News Arabia was set up as a joint venture between Abu Dhabi Media Investment Corporation and British Sky Broadcasting, now the Sky Group. ADMIC is owned by Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, a member of the Abu Dhabi ruling family, and its chairman, Dr Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, also became chairman of Sky News Arabia. The venture was conceived as an independent Arabic-language news channel offering a fresh approach to news across the Arab world, at a time when the region's media landscape was being transformed by political upheaval and the rapid adoption of digital platforms. Market research commissioned ahead of the launch found a strong appetite among Arab audiences for a high-calibre, independent news channel delivering news in real time across television, the internet, smartphones and tablets.

Building the team

Preparations for the launch began well over a year before the channel went on air. In February 2011, Nart Bouran was hired as Sky News Arabia's first director of news; Bouran had previously been director of television at the Reuters news agency. In June 2011, Yasser Thabet, the former programme director at the Dubai-based news channel Al Arabiya, joined as director of output, and Nicholas Love was appointed as director of finance. Operations at the network's headquarters in Abu Dhabi's twofour54 media zone began in February 2012. Ahead of the launch, the channel unveiled its first presenters, drawn from across the Arab world and selected through an extensive process that included market research with more than 700 respondents across the region, assessing attributes such as vibrant energy, distinctive modern style and credibility.

Launch night

Sky News Arabia broadcast for the first time on Sunday 6 May 2012 at 8pm UAE time, reaching more than 50 million homes across the Middle East and North Africa. The launch was marked by a ceremony hosted by Dr Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber at the Jumeirah Etihad Towers in Abu Dhabi, where more than 400 guests witnessed a live countdown to the first broadcast. The channel went on air with around 400 editorial staff across a global network of bureaux, promising a new horizon in the delivery of news across multiple platforms. From the outset it was positioned as a multi-platform operation: alongside the television channel, it launched mobile applications for iPad, iPhone, BlackBerry and Android devices, offering live streaming, news photo galleries and interactive maps, while the website, which had launched in beta form in February 2012, went fully live with blogs from presenters and correspondents, live social media feeds and interactive features.

Editorial standards

Sky News Arabia presents itself as committed to independent, balanced and accurate news coverage, whatever the story. A distinctive feature of the channel is its Editorial Advisory Committee, a six-person body described at launch as a first for the region, intended to ensure that the channel delivers balanced, accurate and consistent journalism. The committee exercises oversight of the network's editorial output, and the channel states a commitment to independent reporting and to avoiding partisan programming. The channel's launch publicity emphasised a fresh approach to news in the Arab world, with Bouran describing the launch as a leap forward for the news industry in the region and setting the ambition of establishing new standards for regional news.

The Abu Dhabi headquarters

The channel broadcasts from its headquarters in Abu Dhabi's twofour54 media zone, a dedicated media free zone created to anchor the emirate's creative industries. The studios are described as among the most technically advanced in the Arab world, and the facility was designed from the start as a multi-platform newsroom serving television, online and mobile output simultaneously. The twofour54 base places the channel at the heart of Abu Dhabi's media cluster, alongside production companies, broadcasters and digital media businesses.

Bureaux network

Sky News Arabia operates a network of bureaux across the Middle East and North Africa, supported by offices in London and Washington DC. It also shares access to the wider international bureaux network of Sky News, the UK channel whose brand it carries, giving it newsgathering reach beyond its own correspondent network. The combination of regional bureaux and access to Sky's global resources was a key part of the launch proposition, intended to give the channel the ability to cover breaking stories across the Arab world and beyond as they happen.

Programming

The channel's output is built around 24-hour rolling news, supplemented by dedicated coverage of business, sport, politics and entertainment. As a free-to-air rolling news service, its schedule is driven by breaking news, with regular bulletins, live reporting, interviews and analysis through the day and night. The multi-platform strategy means that stories are also produced for digital and mobile audiences, with the website and apps carrying live streams, video reports and interactive content alongside the television output.

Carriage and availability

Sky News Arabia is broadcast free-to-air to more than 50 million households in the Middle East and North Africa via satellite and cable providers, as well as over the internet and through mobile applications. Its free-to-air satellite carriage includes Nilesat 201, Arabsat, Hot Bird and Astra, giving it wide coverage across the Arab world and into Europe. Beyond the region, it is available in the United States, Canada, South America, Australia and New Zealand through the myTV platform, and it is carried in the United Kingdom and Ireland on Sky channel 788, which is the channel's home on the Sky electronic programme guide for British viewers seeking Arabic-language news.

Digital and mobile platforms

From launch, Sky News Arabia was designed as a multi-platform service aimed at a tech-savvy generation. The mobile applications launched with the channel offered live streaming of the broadcast, photo galleries, interactive maps and social media sharing, and the website combined rolling news with presenter and correspondent blogs and live social feeds. The digital-first approach reflected the venture's founding research, which identified rapidly changing media consumption habits in the region, with audiences increasingly expecting news in real time on high-definition television sets, computers, smartphones and tablets.

The training academy

In April 2021, Sky News Arabia launched the Sky News Arabia Academy, a training initiative aimed at developing the next generation of Arab media talent. The academy offers specialised training courses for people taking their first steps in media, as well as programmes for established professionals and corporate clients looking to develop their skills. Workshops and courses are led by experienced Arab media professionals and broadcasters, with training taking place in the channel's Abu Dhabi studios and course content developed by journalists, content creators and media leaders from across the region. The academy's head of training programmes has described the initiative as giving aspiring media professionals the tools to succeed across visual, audio and digital platforms.

A decade on air

More than a decade after its launch, Sky News Arabia remains on air as one of the principal Arabic-language international news channels, alongside rivals including Al Jazeera and Al Arabiya. Its joint-venture structure, combining Sky's news brand and newsgathering resources with Abu Dhabi-based ownership and investment, has given it a distinctive position in the market. For Arabic-speaking viewers in the United Kingdom, its presence on Sky channel 788 makes it one of the most accessible Arabic news services on the British electronic programme guide, completing a circle that began with a British broadcaster's investment in an Abu Dhabi newsroom.
