About Sky Showcase
Sky Showcase was a British pay television channel owned and operated by Sky Group, the UK's leading subscription broadcaster. Launched in September 2021 as the replacement for the venerable Sky One, it served as Sky's flagship showcase channel — a curated "best of" service drawing highlights from across Sky's portfolio of channels, from Sky Cinema and Sky Sports to Sky Arts, Sky Nature and Sky Documentaries. After four and a half years on air, the channel closed on 24 February 2026, when Sky One was relaunched in its place.
History and Launch
Sky Showcase was announced on 28 July 2021 alongside a second new channel, Sky Max, as part of the most significant reshaping of Sky's entertainment channels in decades. Sky One — launched in 1982 as Satellite Television and the UK's oldest non-terrestrial channel — would retire from television schedules on 1 September 2021 after almost 40 years on air. Its entertainment and drama programming would move to the new Sky Max, its comedy output to Sky Comedy, and its coveted slot at the top of the programme guide, channel 106, would be taken by Sky Showcase, described by Sky as its new flagship channel.
Sky Showcase launched on 1 September 2021 as a highlight reel for the entire Sky portfolio. "From September those looking for the very best of Sky will find it at the top of their programme guide on Sky Showcase," said Zai Bennett, managing director of content for Sky UK and Ireland, "while Sky Max will become the new home of blockbuster entertainment." The channel broadcast a mix of original series, popular repeats, films and sports highlights, simulcasting selected programming from across Sky's genre channels. In January 2024 the channel began showing select programming from Sky Atlantic, further broadening its showcase remit. On 24 February 2026, Sky Showcase closed alongside Sky Max, and the relaunched Sky One took over — bringing the Sky One brand back to British screens after a four-and-a-half-year absence.
Ownership
Sky Showcase was owned and operated by Sky Group, a division of the American media company Comcast, which acquired Sky in 2018. Sky Group operates one of Europe's largest portfolios of television channels, spanning entertainment, cinema, sports, news, arts, documentaries and children's programming across the UK, Ireland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy. As a Sky-owned channel, Sky Showcase was available to Sky subscribers as part of their entertainment package and to Virgin Media customers, rather than as a free-to-air service.
Programming and Flagship Shows
The defining feature of Sky Showcase was its simulcast model: rather than commissioning its own slate, it curated the best programming from across Sky's channels. Its schedule drew on Sky Witness, Sky Crime, Sky Documentaries, Sky Arts, Sky Nature, Sky Comedy, Sky Max, Sky History and Sky Kids, alongside selected highlights from Sky Cinema and Sky Sports. This made it a shop window for the full breadth of Sky's output — viewers could encounter a natural history documentary, a prestige drama, a comedy premiere and a film all in a single evening's viewing.
The channel also carried a number of programmes billed as Sky Showcase exclusives, including animated series such as The Simpsons, Futurama, Adventure Time, SpongeBob SquarePants, The Croods: Family Tree, Cleopatra in Space and Lego Dreamzzz: Trials of the Dream Chasers. Sky Arts simulcasts brought cultural programming such as Landmark to the channel, while Sky Comedy simulcasts included American Dad, Bob's Burgers, Family Guy, Modern Family and Wellington Paranormal. From January 2024, selected Sky Atlantic programming also appeared on the channel, giving viewers without the full Sky Atlantic package a taste of its prestige output.
News and Current Affairs
Sky Showcase simulcast selected programming from Sky News, the 24-hour news channel operated by Sky, bringing highlights of Sky's news coverage to the flagship entertainment slot. Dedicated rolling news remained the preserve of Sky News itself, but the Showcase channel's remit included news-adjacent documentaries and current affairs programming drawn from Sky Documentaries. Sky News, one of the UK's most-watched news channels, continued to operate independently throughout Sky Showcase's lifetime.
Audience and Ratings
As a pay television channel positioned at the top of the Sky programme guide, Sky Showcase was designed to be a high-visibility destination for Sky subscribers — the first entertainment channel encountered when browsing the guide. Its audience reflected the breadth of its schedule, drawing viewers across genres rather than serving a single demographic. By placing highlights from subscription channels such as Sky Atlantic and Sky Cinema in a prominent slot, the channel also served a promotional function, introducing viewers to programming they might then seek out in full on the originating channels or on demand.
Broadcast and Streaming Availability
During its lifetime Sky Showcase broadcast in 1080i high definition (downscaled to 576i for the standard-definition feed) and operated a one-hour timeshift service, Sky Showcase +1. It was available to Sky subscribers in the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands via satellite, Sky Glass and Sky Stream, and to Virgin Media customers on cable. The channel streamed live through Sky Go, the Now streaming service and Virgin TV Go. After the channel's closure in February 2026, its slot and much of its curatorial role were inherited by the relaunched Sky One.
Cultural Impact
Sky Showcase's creation marked the end of an era: the retirement of Sky One, a channel that had been part of British television since 1982, was a symbolic moment in the industry's history. The decision to replace a single flagship entertainment brand with two genre-defined services — the blockbuster-focused Sky Max and the curated Sky Showcase — reflected how viewing had fragmented in the streaming age, with audiences navigating by genre rather than by channel loyalty. The Showcase model, a linear channel acting as a curated guide to a vast on-demand portfolio, was Sky's answer to the paradox of choice: in an age of overwhelming content, a trusted editor picking the highlights. The channel's closure and the return of Sky One in 2026 suggested that, in the end, the power of a single flagship brand remained hard to replace.
Sister Channels
Sky Showcase was one of an extensive family of Sky channels, including Sky Max, Sky Comedy, Sky Witness, Sky Atlantic, Sky Crime, Sky Documentaries, Sky Nature, Sky Arts, Sky History (operated as a joint venture with A&E Networks), Sky Kids, Sky Cinema, Sky Sports and Sky News, plus the children's and entertainment brands such as Challenge and Pick. Each channel served a distinct genre or audience, with Sky Showcase sitting above them as the cross-portfolio flagship. The E! entertainment brand also formed part of the wider Comcast/Sky family available in the UK.
Recent Developments
The final chapter of Sky Showcase's story came on 24 February 2026, when the channel closed alongside Sky Max and was replaced by the relaunched Sky One. The move restored one of the most famous names in British multichannel television, with the new Sky One inheriting programming from across the Sky portfolio. During its four and a half years on air, Sky Showcase had fulfilled its brief as Sky's flagship showcase — a curated window onto the best of Sky Cinema, Sky Sports, Sky Arts, Sky Documentaries and the genre channels — and its closure marked a strategic return to the single-flagship model that Sky One had embodied for nearly four decades before it.
