About Sky Sports News
Sky Sports News is a British 24-hour sports news television channel owned and operated by Sky Group, a division of Comcast. Launched in October 1998 alongside the debut of Sky Digital, it was the United Kingdom's first rolling sports news channel and Europe's first 24-hour sports television news service. Broadcasting around the clock from Sky Studios in Osterley, west London, it provides continuous coverage of breaking sports news, live reports, interviews and analysis, and has become one of the most recognised sports media brands in Britain.
The channel's first broadcast went out on the morning of 2 October 1998, when presenters Mike Wedderburn and Kelly Cates spoke the opening words from a newly built studio christened the Sky Sports Dome. It has not stopped broadcasting since, and both launch presenters remained with Sky Sports for many years afterwards. From its earliest days, the channel set out to do for sport what rolling news channels had done for general news: to be on air whenever a story broke, with reporters, live links and analysis ready to go.
Launch and early years
Sky Sports News launched to coincide with the launch of Sky Digital on 1 October 1998, with its first full day of broadcasting on 2 October. The channel was the brainchild of Sky Sports' management, who saw an opportunity to extend the Sky Sports brand beyond live event coverage into continuous news. The early years were built on enthusiasm and improvisation, with staff working through the night to get the channel on air and reporters establishing the contacts and routines that would sustain a 24-hour news operation.
The timing was fortuitous. As the channel went on air, the Premier League was into its seventh season and the rivalry between Manchester United and Arsenal was at its height, while within months the channel would cover the sacking of the England football manager and Manchester United's historic treble. The channel quickly established itself as the place where sports fans turned when a big story broke, and its reporters became familiar faces at training grounds and press conferences across the country.
Ownership and operation
Sky Sports News is owned and operated by Sky Group, the pan-European broadcaster owned by Comcast since 2018. It forms part of the Sky Sports portfolio alongside the Sky Sports Main Event, Premier League, Football, Cricket, Golf, Formula 1, Tennis and other channels. The channel is produced by a large dedicated team based at Sky Studios in Osterley, with the SSN newsroom serving as the hub of its newsgathering operation and a network of reporters covering stories across Britain and around the world.
The channel broadcasts in high definition, having launched its HD service in August 2010, and its programmes are available live and on demand through Sky Go, the NOW streaming service and the Sky Sports app and website. It is a pay television channel, available to Sky Sports subscribers and through NOW's sports membership.
The rolling news format
Sky Sports News pioneered the rolling sports news format in Europe, offering round-the-clock coverage of the latest sports news with a rolling wheel of bulletins, live reports and studio discussion. The format was revolutionary in 1998, when sports fans were accustomed to waiting for scheduled bulletins or the next day's newspapers. The channel's promise was simple: whenever a story broke, from a transfer deal to a managerial sacking to a dramatic late winner, Sky Sports News would be there.
The channel's coverage is built around its team of reporters, presenters and producers, who work in shifts to keep the channel on air 24 hours a day. Live outside broadcasts from training grounds, stadiums and press conferences are a staple of the output, alongside studio interviews with players, managers and pundits. The channel's yellow breaking-news branding and its urgent on-screen graphics have become part of the visual language of British sports media.
Good Morning Sports Fans
The channel's breakfast programme, Good Morning Sports Fans, has been a regular feature since Sky Sports News launched in October 1998, broadcasting every morning between 7 and 10am. In its early years the show featured distinctive elements such as a sports-focused weather forecast presented by the Sky News weather team, a surfing report, a racing tip of the day and a review of the sports stories in the day's newspapers. In more recent years its format has aligned with the rest of the channel's output, offering rolling sports news with a breakfast-time feel.
The show was relaunched with a new look in high definition in August 2010 and revamped again in August 2011 with a new set and presenting line-up. In August 2025 it was relaunched as Sky Sports Breakfast, continuing a near-three-decade run as the channel's morning flagship. Its theme music has included compositions by The Chemical Brothers, reflecting the show's energetic, modern identity.
Soccer Saturday and flagship programmes
Sky Sports News is the home of Soccer Saturday, the afternoon-long football scores and results service that has been a Saturday institution since its first edition on 15 August 1998. Fronted for many years by Jeff Stelling, the programme combines live reports from matches across the country with studio discussion and the famous videprinter, and it remains one of the most watched programmes on the channel.
Other flagship strands have included Sky Sports Today, the channel's daytime news programme; The Football Show and its predecessors, offering evening discussion and debate; and Transfer Centre, the channel's dedicated transfer news coverage. The channel's coverage of transfer deadline day, with its reporters stationed outside training grounds and its countdown clock building to the window's closure, has become a cultural event in its own right, drawing some of the channel's biggest audiences of the year.
The Sky Sports News HQ era
On 12 August 2014 Sky Sports News was rebranded as Sky Sports News HQ, as part of a major relaunch that saw the channel move to Sky channel 401 and adopt a new studio, schedule and digital offering. The relaunch was presented as placing the viewer at the heart of sports news, with a greater emphasis on investigative reporting, integrated social media coverage and a redesigned app and website. The channel was delivered by a team of more than 200 staff, including 32 reporters and 20 presenters, and Sky described it as the number one sports news service in the UK and Ireland.
The HQ branding lasted three years. In July 2017 the channel reverted to its original Sky Sports News name, as part of a wider realignment of the Sky Sports channels. The episode reflected the strength of the original brand, which had become so familiar to viewers that the HQ suffix was ultimately deemed unnecessary.
Presenters and reporters
Sky Sports News has been home to some of the most familiar faces in British sports broadcasting. Launch presenters Mike Wedderburn and Kelly Cates both remained with Sky Sports long after that first broadcast, while later generations of presenters have included Kirsty Gallacher, Jim White, whose transfer deadline day broadcasts became legendary before his departure in 2021, and Natalie Sawyer. The channel's reporting team has covered every major sporting story of the past quarter-century, from World Cups and Olympic Games to the biggest transfer sagas and managerial merry-go-rounds.
The channel has also served as a training ground for sports broadcasting talent, with many of its presenters and reporters going on to prominent roles elsewhere in the industry. Its demanding rolling-news environment, requiring presenters to handle breaking stories live and unscripted, has produced a generation of broadcasters comfortable with the pressures of live television.
Digital and social media
Sky Sports News was an early adopter of digital and social media as extensions of its broadcast operation. The Sky Sports website, skysports.com, launched in the same year as the channel and has grown into one of the most visited sports websites in Britain, while the Sky Sports apps offer live streaming of the channel, personalised news and video clips. The channel's social media accounts command millions of followers, and its breaking-news posts are among the most shared in British sports media.
The integration of broadcast, digital and social media was a central theme of the 2014 HQ relaunch, which promised a streamlined multi-platform service with a new catch-up hub of video clips. The channel's digital operation now functions as a 24-hour newsroom in its own right, publishing stories around the clock to complement the linear broadcast.
Twenty-five years on air
In October 2023 Sky Sports News celebrated its 25th anniversary, with Sky Sports publishing an eyewitness account of the launch from those who were there. The anniversary was an opportunity to reflect on a quarter-century in which the channel had grown from an improvised start-up in a newly built studio to an institution of British sports media, covering everything from the Manchester United-Arsenal rivalries of its early years to the modern era of billion-pound broadcast deals and global superstars.
As it enters its fourth decade, Sky Sports News faces a media landscape transformed by social media, streaming and the changing economics of sports rights. Yet its core proposition remains what it was on that October morning in 1998: to be on air whenever sport makes news, with the reporters, the pictures and the analysis to tell the story. Few channels have fulfilled their founding promise so consistently, and Sky Sports News remains the first port of call for sports fans when a big story breaks.
