About Smooth 95.3

Smooth 95.3

Smooth 95.3 (callsign 2PTV) is a commercial easy-listening radio station broadcasting to Sydney on 95.3 MHz FM, owned by Nova Entertainment. Part of the national smoothfm network with its Melbourne sibling smooth 91.5, the station plays easy-listening songs spanning more than 55 years — from the late 1950s to the present — under a "more music, less talk" philosophy. It is the fourth incarnation of the frequency: launched in 2005 as Vega 95.3, reborn as Classic Rock 95.3 in 2010 and briefly as Sydney's 95.3FM in 2011, it found its identity — and the top of the Sydney FM ratings — as smoothfm in May 2012.

Overview

Smooth 95.3 broadcasts on 95.3 MHz FM to the Sydney metropolitan area at 150 kW ERP. The format is adult contemporary with an easy-listening core: ballads, soft pop and timeless favourites, programmed for long listening sessions with minimal talk. It is owned by Nova Entertainment (UK Radio 1 Pty Ltd), with Nova 96.9 as its Sydney sister station, and forms half of the smoothfm network alongside smooth 91.5 Melbourne, with DAB+ smooth services in Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.

The station's proposition is relaxation: "your easy place to relax," in the brand's positioning — feel-good music without the intensity of hit-radio formats, aimed particularly at women aged 35 and over. From its 2012 launch the format promised more music and less talk with an eclectic easy-listening playlist built around ballads; from Valentine's Day 2020 the station revised its genres as the primary channel became a contemporary adult-contemporary station.

History

Vega 95.3: 2005–2010

The station launched on 1 August 2005 as Vega 95.3, DMG Radio's new adult-contemporary station for Sydney, with a Melbourne sibling (Vega 91.5) following on 5 September. Vega targeted the baby-boomer market — listeners aged 40 to 60 — with a mix of talk and music from the 1960s to the 2000s, under the positioning statement "On your wavelength" with a blue squiggle logo. The first song played at launch was Van Morrison's "Wavelength," and the launch presenting lineup included Angela Catterns, Denise Scott, Shaun Micallef, Beverley O'Connor, Wendy Harmer, Francis Leach, Wilbur Wilde, Tony Squires, Rebecca Wilson and Mike Perso.

Vega struggled from the start. The Sydney station managed only a 1.8 per cent audience share and Melbourne 1.2 per cent — last or second-last among surveyed stations. Management insisted the slow take-up was expected from the target demographic, but changes came quickly: in June 2006 the Sydney and Melbourne stations stopped sharing programs, both dropped the "40 years of music" slogan, and drive hosts Rebecca Wilson and Tony Squires moved to share the Sydney breakfast slot with Angela Catterns. By the end of 2006 the Sydney share had climbed to 2.8 per cent and Melbourne to 3 per cent — growth, but far from the hoped-for breakthrough.

Classic Rock and the interregnum: 2010–2012

On 12 March 2010, after five years of underperformance, Vega became Classic Rock 95.3. The format lasted only two years in a crowded Sydney classic-rock market — Triple M and WSFM both leaned into rock tracks after the Vega rebrand, squeezing the newcomer from both sides — and on 21 March 2011 the station was rebadged again, this time as the placeholder "Sydney's 95.3FM." Behind the scenes, change was coming: Lachlan Murdoch had bought into DMG Radio in 2009, keen to fix the failing brand, and in early 2011 the company hired chief marketing officer Tony Thomas and group programming director Paul Jackson — the two architects of what came next. (An internal project name, "Project Tattoo," nearly produced a station called Easy FM before the smoothfm name was chosen.)

The corporate story ran in parallel. In September 2012 Murdoch's Illyria bought the remaining 50 per cent of the company from the Daily Mail & General Trust, taking full control of the network Thomas and Jackson were rebuilding. In February 2014 DMG Radio Australia itself was rebranded as Nova Entertainment, the name it carries today. The Smooth brand briefly extended to television: a 24-hour Smooth music channel launched on Foxtel in December 2013, running until 30 June 2020. By the brand's seventh anniversary in 2019, both Sydney and Melbourne smoothfm stations were number one FM in their respective markets — a turnaround that vindicated the 2012 gamble and made the frequency one of the most valuable in Australian commercial radio.

smoothfm: 2012–present

On 21 May 2012, the station relaunched as smoothfm 95.3 with a new smooth, easy-listening format aimed at women 35+. The transformation was dramatic: within a few years both the Sydney and Melbourne smoothfm stations were number one FM in their respective markets — a remarkable turnaround for frequencies that had been third-format strugglers only six years earlier. The seventh anniversary in 2019 was celebrated as a vindication of the Thomas-Jackson rebuild.

Corporate changes accompanied the on-air success: in September 2012 Lachlan Murdoch's Illyria bought the remaining 50 per cent of the company from the Daily Mail & General Trust, and in February 2014 DMG Radio Australia rebranded as Nova Entertainment. In December 2013 the company extended the Smooth brand to television with a 24-hour music channel on Foxtel (shut down on 30 June 2020). From Valentine's Day 2020 the radio station refreshed its sound again, evolving from pure easy-listening toward contemporary adult contemporary.

Programming and Content

Smooth 95.3's programming is built around the "more music, less talk" promise: long music sweeps of easy-listening favourites with minimal interruption. The playlist spans more than five decades — from late-1950s and early-1960s classics through the ballad-heavy 1970s and 1980s to contemporary adult-contemporary tracks — programmed for the at-work and at-home listener seeking familiar, feel-good music.

Breakfast and drive carry the station's personality presenters, but the emphasis throughout the day is on the music rather than talk content — a deliberate contrast with the personality-driven intensity of the hit-music stations. The format's success with women 35+ has made it one of Sydney's most consistent ratings performers in the demographic.

Coverage and Audience

The 95.3 MHz signal at 150 kW covers metropolitan Sydney, with DAB+ and online streaming extending reception. The audience is Sydney's easy-listening mainstream — predominantly women 35 and over, at-work listeners and those seeking relaxing background music — a demographic in which the station has repeatedly ranked number one FM in Sydney. It competes in the feel-good space with ARN's Gold 101.7, while its minimal-talk positioning differentiates it from the talk-heavy AM stations.

Ownership

Smooth 95.3 is owned by Nova Entertainment (UK Radio 1 Pty Ltd), the company formed from DMG Radio Australia and owned by Lachlan Murdoch's Illyria. Nova Entertainment operates the Nova and smoothfm networks nationally, and the Sydney station shares the company's operations with Nova 96.9. The station is licensed by the ACMA as a commercial broadcasting service.

Digital Presence

The station's website at smoothfm.com.au/station/smooth953 — the address listed in its published profiles — hosts the live stream, program information and podcasts. Streaming runs through Nova Entertainment's digital platforms and app, and the smoothfm brand maintains social media channels built around its feel-good music positioning. The DAB+ smooth services in Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth extend the brand nationally beyond the Sydney and Melbourne FM flagships, and the station's social channels trade in the feel-good imagery — sunsets, singalongs, slow mornings — that the format is built on.
