About Soester Anzeiger

Soester Anzeiger

The Soester Anzeiger is a regional daily newspaper serving Soest and the surrounding district in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Published by the W. Jahn Verlag, in which the Ippen group holds a forty percent stake, it has appeared since 1 July 1853, making it one of the oldest daily newspapers in Westphalia. The paper appears Monday to Saturday with a sold circulation of around 27,000 copies, serving the towns of Soest, Werl and Warstein and the surrounding municipalities with dedicated local editions. Its overregional pages come from the Westfälischer Anzeiger in Hamm. The paper's headquarters are at Schloitweg 19-21 in Soest, and its editor-in-chief is Christian Gerstenberger.

Overview

The Soester Anzeiger is the defining newspaper of the Soest district, the historic Hellweg region between the Ruhr area and the Sauerland. The paper's circulation area covers the city of Soest, with its more than one-thousand-year history and its famous half-timbered old town, the pilgrimage town of Werl in the west, the town of Warstein in the southeast, and the surrounding municipalities of Bad Sassendorf, Lippetal, Welver, Ense, Wickede (Ruhr) and Möhnesee. The paper publishes separate local editions for these sub-regions: the Werler Anzeiger for the west, the central editions for Soest and the surrounding communities, and the Warsteiner Anzeiger for the southeast, each with its own local editorial office.

The paper appears six days a week in print and is available as an e-paper and through the soester-anzeiger.de portal. Its local newsrooms in Soest, Werl and Warstein comprise around twenty editors and trainees, producing the district's local journalism, while the overregional mantle comes from the Westfälischer Anzeiger's central newsroom in Hamm. A cooperation with Der Patriot, the local daily of Lippstadt, provides a guest page with important topics from the Lippstadt area. Since the end of the Westfalenpost in July 2009, the Soester Anzeiger has been the only daily newspaper with local reporting in Soest, where it previously held a market share of more than 88 percent.

History

The Soester Anzeiger first appeared on 1 July 1853 in the publishing house of Eduard Rochol. Rochol had already entered publishing in the revolutionary year of 1848, when the new press freedom allowed him to launch "Der westfälische Bürger- und Bauernfreund" on 1 July 1848. The Soester Anzeiger built on this foundation, serving the historic Hanseatic city of Soest and the surrounding Börde landscape through the second half of the nineteenth century. The paper's archives, held in the original and on microfilm at the Soest town archive, document the region's history from the Kaiserreich through the Weimar Republic.

The twentieth century brought the upheavals that shaped all German newspapers, and the paper was refounded after the Second World War, resuming its role as the voice of the Soest district. In the post-war decades the Soester Anzeiger established the content partnership with the Westfälischer Anzeiger in Hamm, securing the economic basis for a full-service daily. The W. Jahn Verlag developed the paper's network of local editions for Soest, Werl and Warstein, and the Ippen group's forty percent stake linked the paper to one of Germany's major regional media houses. The end of the competing Westfalenpost in 2009 left the Soester Anzeiger as the sole daily with local reporting in Soest, cementing a monopoly position it had long approached.

Coverage and Content

The Soester Anzeiger's local pages cover Soest, Werl, Warstein and the surrounding municipalities with dedicated editions for each sub-region. Municipal politics is a central beat, with reporting on the town councils, the district council of the Soest district, and the planning issues of the Hellweg region. The paper follows the local economy, from the agricultural sector of the Soester Börde, one of Germany's most fertile landscapes, to the manufacturing and service companies of the towns and the pilgrimage tourism of Werl.

Cultural reporting draws on the region's rich heritage: the half-timbered old town of Soest with its leaning church tower, the annual Allerheiligenkirmes, one of Germany's largest inner-city fairs, and the pilgrimage basilica of Werl. The paper gives extensive space to club and association life, including Soest's renowned strength sports tradition, with the AC Soest weightlifting club among Germany's most successful, and the annual New Year's Eve run from Werl to Soest, Germany's largest, drawing more than eight thousand runners. The Westfälischer Anzeiger's mantle provides North Rhine-Westphalian state politics, national and international news, business, culture and sports. The paper's "Sonderthemen" editorial team also produces the free Stadt-Anzeiger, distributed to all households on Wednesdays and Saturdays with a circulation of around 80,500 copies.

Organization and Ownership

The Soester Anzeiger is published by the W. Jahn Verlag GmbH & Co. KG, based at Schloitweg 19-21 in Soest. The Ippen group holds a forty percent stake in the publishing house, linking the paper to the Ippen media network, while the Westfälischer Anzeiger media group holds a stake in the Jahn Verlag as well. The paper is part of the Westfälischer Anzeiger's cooperative structures, receiving its overregional mantle from the Hamm newsroom.

Editorial responsibility lies with editor-in-chief Christian Gerstenberger of the Westfälischer Anzeiger, and the Soester Anzeiger's local newsrooms in Soest, Werl and Warstein comprise around twenty editors and trainees. The cooperation with Der Patriot of Lippstadt provides the guest page with Lippstadt topics, making both papers head papers sharing the Hamm mantle. Production is handled through the group's printing arrangements, and distribution, subscription management and advertising sales are managed through the publishing house's own organisations. The free Stadt-Anzeiger, produced by the paper's special-topics editorial team, extends the advertising reach to all households.

Readership and Market Position

The Soester Anzeiger holds a monopoly position among daily newspapers with local reporting in Soest, where it previously commanded a market share of more than 88 percent before the Westfalenpost's closure in 2009. Its sold circulation of around 27,000 copies serves a readership rooted in the historic Hellweg region, a population with strong local identity shaped by the thousand-year history of Soest and the agricultural prosperity of the Börde. Subscriber loyalty in the region is traditionally high.

The paper's market position as the sole daily gives it a unique responsibility as the chronicler of the district's civic life. Competition comes from the free Stadt-Anzeiger, the paper's own free weekly reaching all households, and from digital news sources. Like all German regional dailies, the paper has experienced circulation decline since the late 1990s, with sold circulation falling by around seventeen percent, addressed through e-paper subscriptions and the soester-anzeiger.de portal. Its market position rests on the depth of its three local editions: no other medium covers Soest, Werl and Warstein with comparable thoroughness and continuity.

Digital Presence

The Soester Anzeiger's digital home is soester-anzeiger.de, the paper's online portal presenting current news from Soest and the district. Readers can access the complete printed edition as an e-paper, and the portal's online newsroom provides continuously updated regional news. The paper describes itself as a modern hometown paper offering current news, informative background and opinionated commentary on events from the hometown to the world, at home in politics and business as in sports, culture and entertainment.

The digital offering follows a subscription model, with the e-paper available in print and digital combinations. The paper reaches readers through social media channels and newsletters, and the free Stadt-Anzeiger's household distribution complements the digital reach. The integration of the three local editions into the portal gives readers across the district a unified digital front page for the Soest region, while the paper's core remains the daily journalism for Soest, Werl, Warstein and the surrounding municipalities.
