About Sohu Focus

Sohu Focus

Sohu Focus, published at focus.cn and known in Chinese as Sohu Jiaodian, is the real-estate news and services portal of the Sohu group, based in Beijing, China. It is one of the oldest property websites in China: the Focus site was established in 1999, in the first generation of Chinese commercial websites, and it has operated as Sohu's principal real-estate brand since Sohu acquired it in 2003. Where the main Sohu portal covers general news, entertainment and video, Sohu Focus is a specialist vertical devoted to a single subject — homes and the housing market — publishing new-home news, prices, project reviews and community forums for cities across China.

Origins in the first portal era

Sohu Focus began life as Focus.cn, an independent property website founded in 1999. That date places it among the earliest Chinese websites of any kind devoted to real estate, launched at a moment when home buying in China was being transformed by the commercialisation of housing and when the first generation of internet users was beginning to research major purchases online. A property portal founded in 1999 therefore predates most of the Chinese internet industry itself, and it grew up alongside the housing market it covered. Trade reporting by Marbridge Consulting, summarising Chinese technology press coverage, records the two facts that define the site's early history: Focus.cn was established in 1999, and Sohu acquired it in 2003, turning the site into Sohu's primary real-estate service.

Acquisition by Sohu in 2003

The 2003 acquisition folded Focus.cn into one of China's pioneering internet companies. Sohu itself had been founded in 1996 by Charles Zhang, who had completed a doctorate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and it was listed on NASDAQ in 2000 under the ticker SOHU. The company's name, rendered in Chinese characters, literally means "search fox", a reminder that it began as a search and directory business before becoming a broad portal. Headquartered at the Sohu Internet Plaza in Beijing's Haidian District, Sohu built a family of specialist verticals alongside its main portal, and Focus became the group's property arm. In Sohu's own corporate descriptions, focus.cn is consistently presented as the group's platform for real-estate information and services, listed alongside the group's other specialist property, 17173.com, a dedicated hub for gamers. The acquisition gave the young Focus site the traffic, advertising sales and editorial infrastructure of a listed portal group, while giving Sohu a dedicated brand in the property category rather than a channel buried inside a general portal.

What Sohu Focus publishes

The editorial remit of Sohu Focus is the Chinese housing market at city level. Its core content is new-home coverage: launch news for residential projects, guide prices, project reviews and the practical information a buyer needs when comparing developments. Around that core it publishes market news — policy changes affecting home purchase, mortgage and transaction rules, land and planning news, and analysis of price movements in individual cities — and it has long operated community forums in which residents and prospective buyers discuss particular projects and neighbourhoods. This combination of news, price data, reviews and forums is the classic model of the Chinese property portal, and Sohu Focus applies it as a distinct vertical brand of the Sohu group rather than as a subsection of the Sohu homepage. For readers, the value of the model is local granularity: housing is bought street by street and district by district, so a national portal has to publish, in effect, hundreds of local editions.

Place in Sohu's vertical strategy

Sohu's development after its portal years was built on owning strong category brands rather than relying on a single homepage. Focus.cn for property and 17173.com for games are the two examples the company itself cites in describing its specialised online properties. Within that strategy, Sohu Focus carried the group's presence in one of the largest advertising categories of the Chinese internet, since property developers were among the heaviest online advertisers of the portal era. The importance of the vertical inside the group was underlined in 2014, when Chinese technology media reported, via Marbridge Consulting's summary, that Sohu was planning to spin off Focus.cn, together with its auto news portal, for independent stock-market listings. The reports, attributed to an industry insider, treated Focus as a business substantial enough to stand on its own in the capital markets — a measure of how far the 1999 property site had travelled inside the group. Whether or not a spin-off proceeded as reported, the episode is part of the site's documented history and shows that Sohu Focus was regarded as one of the group's principal assets, not a minor channel.

Beijing base and national coverage

Sohu Focus is a Beijing operation in ownership and management, sitting inside a group headquartered in the capital's Haidian District, but its subject matter is national. Chinese property portals organise their content by city because prices, purchase restrictions and supply differ sharply between markets, and Sohu Focus follows that structure, publishing city-level new-home news, prices and reviews across China. Its Beijing identity still matters editorially: national housing policy is made in the capital, and a portal owned by a Beijing-listed group is well placed to cover the policy announcements — on mortgages, purchase limits and housing provident funds — that move every local market it serves. The portal thus reads the national market from Beijing while reporting it city by city.

The housing market it covers

The longevity of Sohu Focus means its archive spans the full modern history of Chinese urban housing: the rapid commercial development of the 2000s, the cycles of tightening and easing that followed, and the shift of home-buying research almost entirely online. A portal established in 1999 has covered that story continuously, adapting its format from desktop web pages to the mobile era in which Sohu's wider media platform distributes content through apps and mobile sites. For the property industry, sites of this generation became part of the market's infrastructure — the place where launch prices are checked, where project reputations are made in forums, and where policy changes are first explained to ordinary buyers. Sohu Focus's claim on readers rests on that infrastructural role as much as on any single news story.

Relationship with the Sohu brand

Although it operates under its own name and its own domain, Sohu Focus is inseparable from the parent brand whose name it carries. Sohu is one of the founding names of the Chinese internet: founded in 1996, a NASDAQ-listed company since 2000, and operator of a media platform that distributes news and video through the Sohu News app, the mobile portal and the main website, as well as the Changyou games business. Sohu Focus benefits from that group's editorial standards, technology and advertiser relationships, while maintaining the separate identity that a specialist property audience expects. The dual identity — a Sohu company, but a Focus publication — has been the site's structure since 2003 and explains both its name and its positioning in directories of Chinese media, where it is catalogued as Sohu's real-estate portal rather than as part of the general Sohu news site.

Why Sohu Focus matters

Sohu Focus matters for three documented reasons. First, its 1999 founding makes it one of China's earliest property websites, a survivor from the first commercial internet generation. Second, its 2003 acquisition by Sohu made it an early example of a pattern that shaped Chinese internet media: independent vertical sites absorbed into portal groups and run as category brands. Third, its treatment in 2014 spin-off reporting shows it was valued as a standalone business within one of China's original listed internet companies. For readers in Beijing and across China, it remains what it was designed to be after the acquisition — Sohu's primary real-estate service, publishing the new-home news, prices, reviews and community discussion through which much of China's housing market is researched and debated.
