About SR Kultur
SR Kultur
SR Kultur (own spelling SR kultur) is the culture radio of Saarländischer Rundfunk (SR), broadcasting from Saarbrücken for the Saarland. Launched on 1 January 1995 as "SR 2 Kulturradio" — the successor to the "Studiowelle Saar" — it was renamed SR Kultur on 22 September 2024. With 40,000 listeners (Media-Analyse II/2026), it is the SR's smallest wave: classical music, culture, and the spoken word for the border region. The name also designates a cross-programme "Themenmarke" (theme brand) for cultural content across the SR's programmes.
Overview
SR Kultur broadcasts from Saarbrücken across the Saarland on FM, DAB+ (block 9A), cable, satellite, and livestream — the border region's cultural wave, independently programmed since January 1995. The SR intendant is Martin Grasmück (in office since 1 May 2021, re-elected June 2026 for a term beginning 1 May 2027). The programme is financed through the broadcasting licence fee.
History
SR Kultur's lineage begins in 1967 — the year the SR's second radio programme became the "Studiowelle Saar", the sophisticated studio wave, gradually expanded into a full programme (daily broadcasts from 1971). From 1972 to 1990, the Studiowelle cooperated with the SDR and SWF, taking over parts of their programmes; from 1991 to the end of 1994, it was largely combined with the Hessischer Rundfunk's hr2-kultur.
On 1 January 1995, the former Studiowelle became "SR 2 Kulturradio" — an independently programmed, culture-oriented full programme from Saarbrücken. The independence ended the cooperation era: the small Saarland broadcaster producing its own cultural wave, the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern (from 2007, the merged orchestra) as the musical flagship.
On 22 September 2024, "SR 2 Kulturradio" became "SR Kultur" — following the SWR's "SWR Kultur" rebrand shortly before. The new name designates both the radio programme and the cross-programme theme brand for cultural content across the SR's offerings.
The Studiowelle Years: 1967–1994
The "Studiowelle Saar" — the studio wave — was the SR's cultural laboratory for nearly three decades. Launched in 1967 as the sophisticated redevelopment of the second programme, gradually expanded to a full programme with daily broadcasts from 1971, it embodied the small broadcaster's cultural ambition: the studio as the cultural space, the wave as the workshop.
The cooperation era defined the Studiowelle: from 1972 to 1990, the joint operation with the SDR and SWF — the southwestern broadcasters sharing the cultural programme, the Saarland's wave carrying Stuttgart's and Baden-Baden's culture. From 1991 to the end of 1994, the combination with hr2-kultur — the Hessian culture wave filling the Saarland's frequencies. The cooperations were the small broadcaster's survival strategy: the cultural programme too expensive to produce alone, too important to abandon.
The 1 January 1995 independence — "SR 2 Kulturradio" as a self-programmed cultural full programme from Saarbrücken — was the declaration of cultural sovereignty: the small state producing its own cultural wave, the cooperation era ending, the Saarland's culture on the Saarland's frequencies. The independence cost money the SR barely had — but the cultural wave was the price of the broadcaster's legitimacy.
The Philharmonie: The Orchestra
The Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern — since 2007, the merged orchestra of the SR and SWR — is SR Kultur's musical flagship. The predecessor, the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Saarbrücken, was the SR's own radio orchestra: the symphonic sound of the small broadcaster, the concerts broadcast, the recordings produced.
The 2007 merger — the Saarbrücken and Kaiserslautern radio orchestras combining into the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie — followed the ARD's orchestral consolidation: the small broadcasters pooling their musical resources, the two cities sharing one orchestra. For SR Kultur, the Philharmonie is the house band: the concerts recorded, the premieres broadcast, the classical music with the Saarland's own sound.
The orchestra's binational home — Saarbrücken and Kaiserslautern, the Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate — mirrors the broadcaster cooperation: the music crossing the state border, the Philharmonie as the southwestern sound. The radio orchestra tradition — the publicly funded symphonic ensemble, the broadcasts as the democratic concert hall — continues: the music for the 40,000 listeners and the millions who never tune in but fund it.
The Themenmarke: Culture Across the Waves
The 22 September 2024 renaming — from "SR 2 Kulturradio" to "SR Kultur" — introduced the dual meaning: the radio programme and the cross-programme "Themenmarke" (theme brand) for cultural content across the SR's offerings. The model follows the SWR's "SWR Kultur" rebrand shortly before: the culture brand unbound from the single frequency, marking the cultural journalism wherever it appears — the television features, the online articles, the radio programmes.
The Themenmarke reflects the digital era's brand logic: the audience encounters culture across platforms, and the brand must follow. The "SR Kultur" label on a television documentary, a podcast, a concert stream — the cultural promise, platform-independent. For the small SR, the theme brand multiplies the cultural wave's reach: the 40,000 radio listeners plus the television viewers, the online readers, the stream watchers — the culture brand's total audience exceeding the frequency's.
The renaming also retired the numbering: no longer "SR 2" — the second programme — but "SR Kultur", the culture brand. The number implied hierarchy; the name asserts identity. The cultural wave as the broadcaster's cultural conscience, not its second choice.
Culture in the Border Region
SR Kultur's cultural coverage reflects the Saarland's binational cultural life: the Saarbrücken Staatstheater, the music festivals, the French cultural institutes, the cross-border exhibitions. The border region's culture is inherently comparative: the German and French traditions side by side, the Saarlander's cultural bilingualism.
The French dimension distinguishes the station from every other ARD culture wave: the French literature, the French music, the Lorraine cultural scene — the culture programme of the border, for the border. The "culture in the broad sense" — the station's self-description — includes the everyday culture: the dialect, the customs, the regional identity. The "Mein Land. Mein Sender." slogan's cultural translation: the land's culture, the sender's wave.
The 40,000 listeners — the smallest audience, the most engaged — are the Saarland's cultural core: the concertgoers, the readers, the theatre subscribers. The cultural wave's economics are the merit-good argument: the market will not provide the classical music and the spoken word; the licence fee must. The small broadcaster's cultural wave is the small state's cultural guarantee.
Programming
SR Kultur covers culture in the broad sense: classical music, the spoken word, cultural journalism — the public-service cultural offering for the Saarland, from the Philharmonie's concerts to the border region's bilingual cultural life. As a theme brand, "SR Kultur" also marks cultural content in the SR's other programmes: the cultural journalism that crosses the waves, from television documentaries to online features and concert streams.
Coverage and Audience
SR Kultur broadcasts on FM, DAB+ (block 9A, 120 kbps), cable, satellite, and livestream across the Saarland. Its 40,000 listeners (MA II/2026) are the SR's smallest radio audience — and its most culturally engaged.
Ownership and Funding
SR Kultur is operated by Saarländischer Rundfunk, the public-law broadcaster for the Saarland and an ARD member, headquartered at the Funkhaus Halberg in Saarbrücken. The SR's slogan is "Mein Land. Mein Sender." The programme is financed through the broadcasting licence fee. The SR intendant is Martin Grasmück.
Digital Presence
SR Kultur's online presence is integrated into the SR's digital platforms, with livestream, programme information, and podcasts. Because the official domain has not been independently load-verified, the website field of this profile is left empty pending verification.
